  • Icosahedron and dodecahedron designs are experimental designs which can be used for response surface analysis for the case when three independent variables are involved. When we are interested in estimating the slope of a response surface, slope rot at ability is a desirable property. In this paper, we derive conditions for icosahedron and dodecahedron designs to have slope rotatability, and actually obtain some slope-rotatable icosahedron and dodecahedron designs. We also apply Park and Kim (1992)'s measure of slope rotatability to icosahedron and dodecahedron designs, and observe resultant facts.

  • The discrete ordinates method (SN) is one of the major shielding calculation method, which is suitable for solving deep-penetration transport problems. Our objective is to explore the available quadrature sets and to improve the accuracy in shielding problems involving strong anisotropy. The linear discontinuous finite-element (LDFE) quadrature sets based on the icosahedron (in short, ICLDFE quadrature sets) are developed by defining projected points on the surfaces of the icosahedron. Weights are then introduced in the integration of the discontinuous finite-element basis functions in the relevant angular regions. The multivariate secant method is used to optimize the discrete directions and their corresponding weights. The numerical integration of polynomials in the direction cosines and the Kobayashi benchmark are used to analyze and verify the properties of these new quadrature sets. Results show that the ICLDFE quadrature sets can exactly integrate the zero-order and first-order of the spherical harmonic functions over one-twentieth of the spherical surface. As for the Kobayashi benchmark problem, the maximum relative error between the fifth-order ICLDFE quadrature sets and references is only -0.55%. The ICLDFE quadrature sets provide better integration precision of the spherical harmonic functions in local discrete angle domains and higher accuracy for simple shielding problems.

  • In this study, a shape design and an analysis considering structural stability were investigated to develop an icosahedron-based hemispherical modular dome. To design this modular dome, a program that can perform icosahedron shape modeling, modularization of joint connection members, and the analysis of structural stability was developed. Furthermore, based on the adopted numerical model, the eigen buckling mode, unstable behavior characteristics according to load vector, and the critical buckling load of the modular dome under uniformly distributed load and concentrated load were analyzed, and the resistance capacities of the structure according to different load vectors were compared. The analysis results for the modular dome suggest that the developed program can perform joint modeling for shape design as well as modular member design, and adequately expressed the nonlinear behaviors of structured according to load conditions. The critical buckling load results also correctly reflected the characteristics of the load conditions. The uniformly distributed load was more advantageous to the structural stability than concentrated load.

  • We have studied the size confinement effect on the properties of melting-like transition of small icosahedral copper clusters using a classical molecular dynamics simulation based on a well fitted empirical potential. We investigated the caloric curves of icosahedron nanoclusters and the significant depression in the melting temperatures of the copper nanoclusters was compared with that of the bulk copper. A structural transitions from decahedral to icosahedral shapes were shown. As the cluster size increased, the melting temperature increased, and the latent heat increased but seem to be saturated. However, the specific heat was unrelated to the cluster size.

  • Solar power is being spotlighted recently as a new energy source due to environmental problems and applications of solar power to curved structures are increasing. Solar panels installed on curved surfaces have different efficiencies depending on its position and the efficient positioning of solar panels plays a critical role in the design of solar power generation systems. In this study, the changing characteristics of solar irradiance were analyzed for hemispherical dome with a large curvature and the positioning of solar panels that can efficiently utilize solar energy was investigated. With an icosahedron-based hemispherical dome consisting of triangular elements as target model, a program for calculating solar irradiance using a normal vector of the solar module on each face was developed. Furthermore, the change of solar irradiance according to the sun's path was analyzed by time and season, and its effects on shades were also examined. From the analysis results, the effective positioning could be determined on the basis of the efficiency of the solar panels installed on the dome surfaces on solar irradiance.

  • We study the existence of regular polygons and regular solids whose vertices have integer coordinates in the three dimensional space and study side lengths of such squares, cubes and tetrahedra. We show that except for equilateral triangles, squares and regular hexagons there is no regular polygon whose vertices have integer coordinates. By using this, we show that there is no regular icosahedron and no regular dodecahedron whose vertices have integer coordinates. We characterize side lengths of such squares and cubes. In addition to these results, we prove Ionascu's result [4, Theorem2.2] that every equilateral triangle of side length $\sqrt{2}m$ for a positive integer m whose vertices have integer coordinate can be a face of a regular tetrahedron with vertices having integer coordinates in a different way.

  • Adenovirus which is an important infectious viral agent in respiratory and alimentary tract was investigated in Pusan, 1999. Fifteen cases of adenovirus were detected from stools and throat swabs of suspected patients. Two cases of enteric adenovirus were detected from a 5 years old boy and a 6-month-old boy. Thirteen cases of respiratory adenoviruses were detected from children aged under 10 years old and one adult. From respiratory specimens, 1 case of adenovirus type 2, 1 case of type 5, and 11 cases of type 3 were found. Enterotype 41 was detected from fecal preparations. Adenoviruses appeared mostly during winter months, January, February and December. Adenovirus showed a slowly progressive cytopathic effect on HEp-2 cells, Vero cells and BGM cells at 37$^{\circ}C$, in a 5-7% $CO_{2}$ incubation. An electron microscopic observation exhibited non-enveloped icosahedron with a diameter of 70nm. No significant differences on cytopathic effect and morphological features have been found from specimens of either alimentary tract or respiratory secretions.

  • This study investigated the feasibility of synthesizing GNPs using synchrotron radiation X-ray for use as a radiosensitizer in radiotherapy, and examined the morphology of the GNPs. Different concentration ratios of 4-mM gold precursor aqueous solution and 4-mM $NaHCO_3$ were mixed. This gold precursor aqueous solution was continuously irradiated with synchrotron radiation in the 4B X-ray microdiffraction beamline of Pohang Light Source (PLS)-II in Korea. The SEM, EDS, TEM, and XRD spectra of the GNPs synthesized using the synchrotron radiation were investigated. The GNPs synthesized using the synchrotron radiation were nanocrystals predominantly in the (111) direction of the face-centered cubic structure. We found that the shape of the gold nanoparticles was icosahedron at the molar concentrations of 0.25 mM:0.25 mM and 0.5 mM:0.5 mM mixed with 4 mM $HAuCl_4{\cdot}3H_2O$ and 4 mM $NaHCO_3$ solutions.
