  • Nucleotide sequence in internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of ribosomal DNA among mulberry varieties (Morus species) were analyzed in order to identify the possibility of classification for the species. The variations in the ITS regions were compared among 9 mulberry varieties and one variety of Cudrania species as an outgroup. ITS 1 region of the varieties ranging from 219 to 220 bp in length was 49-50 bp shorter than ITS 2 region. Of 510 sites in the ITS 1 and 2 regions, 148 sites were potentially variable, of which 52% and 48% sites were distributed in ITS 1 and ITS 2 regions, respectively. By pairwise comparisons on the nucleotide sequences in the ITS 1 and 2 regions among 9 mulberry varieties, they were classified into 5 groups. Divergence values of the sequences, however, were considerably low ranging from 0 to 1.3%. Especially, there was no divergence among Backasipmunja, Chungilppong and Milsungpong and Jungyasang, Ssarigol II and Yulbon, respectively.

  • This work was performed to confirm the molecular discrimination through the nrITS1 sequences among 3 taxa of Scirpus L. sensu lato (s.l.) species. S. planiculmis represented only 2 base sequence variations with S. maritimus in spite that they showed different morphological features. The nucleotide sequences of the ITS1 region from S. planiculmis were shown to have 99.1% homology with S. maritimus and 60.4% homology with S. triqueter. Although the morphology of S. planiculmis is similar with S. triqueter, molecular basis of the size and sequences on ITS1 region were shown to have distinctive differences. For divergency investigation on same sites and metapopulation, sequencing was conducted on ITS1 region with partial 5.8S and 18S regions. All plants of each species collected at the same site had identical band size pattern and sequences. Intraspecific molecular divergency was not identified in spite that these species live in different wetland sites. The ITS1 sequences described here provided a powerful genetic tool for phylogenetic studies which was difficult by morphological identification as high rate of morphological plasticity.

  • This paper presents a numerically robust algorithm to construct a Voronoi diagram of circles in the plane. The circles are allowed to have intersections among them, but one circle cannot fully contain another circle. The Voronoi diagram is a tessellation of the plane into Voronoi regions of given circles. Each circle has its Voronoi region which is defined by a set of points in the plane closer to the circle than any other circles. The distance from a point p to a circle $c_i$ of center $p_i$ and radius $r_i$ is ${\parallel}p-p_i{\parallel}-r_i$, which is the closest Euclidean distance from p to the circle boundary. The proposed algorithm first constructs the point Voronoi diagram of centers of given circles, then it enlarges each point to the circle and expands its Voronoi region accordingly. This region-expansion process is done by local modifications and after completing this process for the whole circles the desired circle Voronoi diagram can be obtained. The proposed algorithm is numerically robust and we provide with a few examples to show its robustness. The algorithm runs in $O(n^2)$ time in the worst case and O(n) time on average where n is the number of the circles. The experiment shows that the region-expansion algorithm is robust and runs fast with strong linear time behavior.

  • This study was carried out to elucidate phylogenetic relationship of a yellow lump, Phellinus linteus by comparing the nuclear ribosomal intergenic spacer (IGS) I region with that of other genera of basidiomycetes retrieved from Genbank. IGS I region of Phellinus linteus was 730 bp long and sequence homology was conserved in the 5' region, in particular $1{\sim}280\;bp$, and decreased in the direction toward the 3' end. ITS region was widely studied in phylogenies related to basidiomycetes, but IGS region was not well understood yet. Our study indicated that IGS region can be a good tool in phylogenetic study of basidiomycetes.

  • This study investigates the characteristics of the Gross Moist Stability (GMS) over the tropics. The GMS summarizes the relationship between large-scale entropy forcing due to radiation and surface fluxes and the response of smaller-scale convection. The GMS is able to explain both to where moist entropy is advected by the atmospheric circulation and how deep the moisture flux convergence is in the tropical region. In the deep convective region, positive GMS appears over the warm pool region due to the strong column-integrated moisture convergence and the ensuing export of moist entropy to the environment. The vertical advection of moist entropy dominates over the horizontal advection in this region. Meanwhile, over the eastern tropical ITCZ region, which is characterized by shallow convective area, import of moist entropy by horizontal winds is dominant compared to the vertical moist entropy advection. Future changes in the GMS are also examined using the 22 CMIP5 model simulations. A decrease in the GMS appears widely across the tropics, but its increase occurs over the western-central equatorial Pacific. It is evident that the increased GMS region corresponds to an increased region of precipitation, implying that strengthened convection in the future due to increased entropy forcing exports the enhanced moist energy to stabilize the environment.

  • The phusical optics approximation to an E-polarized diffraction by a composite wedge provides its diffraction coefficients in terms of finite series of cotangent functions. In this paper, its diffraction coefficients inside the dielectric part are extended to become the exact solution to the perfectly conducting wedge as its relative dielectric constant increases to infinite or decreases to 1. It is assured that the extended diffraction coefficients satisfy the boundary condition at th econducting interface and become zero in the artificially complementary region of the composite wedge.

  • Four strains of Phellinus spp. was identified based on internal transcribed spacer(ITS) region of rDNA sequence analysis and morphological characteristics. Basidiocarps of all strains were effused-reflexed and hymenial surface was poroid. Hyphal system was dimitic and basidiospore was globose to ellipsoid. The amplification of ITS regions produced a DNA fragment of 500 to 780 by in all strains examined. The determined sequences were analyzed for the reconstruction of phylogenetic tree. From these results, Phellinus sp. KM-1, KM-2, and KM-4 was identified as P. hartigii, P. baumii, and P. linteus, respectively.

  • This paper gives a novel approach that can be represented an image efficiently with its region and shape information together. To do this, we introduced a region-centralized shape descriptor(RCSD) that the size of region only exists at a center point. RCSD consists of circles with three parameters, the distance and the angle between the tenter points, and the diameter, respectively We verified the RCSD parameters to have an information of shape. We can be proved this by reconstructing the shape from the given parameters and evaluated the difference between the its image and the original one. To get this image, we find the estimated points on the contour from the parameters, and connect them by using an interpolation. According to the evaluation, we obtained 88% performance for real images, and showed that it can be used efficiently for representing the binary images. Also we cu make RCSD parameters to be the normalized patterns to have an invariant of its scale or position, and expand them to improve the quality of the performance.

  • In this study, we propose a novel color-image segmentation algorithm to discern the teeth region utilizing RG intensity and its relevant RGB histogram features with resolving the variations of its maximum intensity in terms of peaks and valleys. Tooth candidates in a CCD image are first extracted by applying RGB color multi-threshold levels and consequently the successive morphological image operations and a Sobel-mask edge processing are performed to resolve the teeth region and its contour.

  • The characteristics of plantlets redifferentiated from calli of F1 hybrid between Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius were investigated. Growth of plantlets redifferentiated from F1 hybrid was superior to the plants redifferentiated from Korean ginseng. Stem color of plantlets redifferentiated from F1 hybrid was more purple than that from Korean ginseng and leaf color of the former was also greener than that of the latter. Chunpoong, Yunpoong and Seonweon which are belonged to Korean ginseng showed same PCR band(A), while American ginseng showed different PCR band (B) in Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region. F1 hybrid exhibited both A and B PCR band which belonged to Korean ginseng and American ginseng, respectively. F1 hybrid calli and plantlets redifferentiated from F1 hybrid calli showed same PCR band with that of F1 hybrid plant in ITS region. Therefore it was confirmed that piantlets redifferentiated from F1 hybrid exhibited genetic stability in ITS region.
