The size and layout of user interface components need to be optimally designed in terms of reachability, visibility, clearance, and compatibility in order for efficient and effective use of products. The present study develops an ergonomic design method which optimizes the size and layout of user interface components using adaptive genetic algorithm. The developed design method determines a near-optimal design which maximizes the aggregated score of 4 ergonomic design criteria (reachability, visibility, clearance, and compatibility). The adaptive genetic algorithm used in the present study finds a near-optimum by automatically adjusting the key parameter (probability of mutation) of traditional genetic algorithm according to the characteristic of current solutions. Since the adaptive mechanism partially helps to overcome the local optimality problem, the probability of finding the near-optimum has been substantially improved. To evaluate the effectiveness of the developed design method, the present study applied it to the user interface design for a portable wireless communication radio.
Recently, consumers are tend to purchase the user-centered designed product using interface enginnering and human factors techniques. Therefore, it is important that the designer's requirements should be analyzed focused on the human machine interface. This paper described the interface usability evaluation technique(suvjective evaluation) for the interface between user and product. This methodology is the integrated interface usbility evaluation method AHP and Conjoint Analysis. AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) is a multicriteria decision model to give priority after expressing hierarchically for decision making problem. Conjoint Analysis enduavors to unravel the value, or partworths, that consumers place on the product or service's attributes from experimental subjects' evluation of profiles based on hypothetical products or services. A new usability test methodology proposed by this paper includes techniques jointed both consistency test by AHP and experimental subjective evaluation of profiles by Conjoint Analysis for evaluating the user's emotion and impression.
A newly designed haptic interface enables an operator to control a remote robot precisely. It transmits position information to the remote robot and feeds back the interaction force from it. A control algorithm of haptic interface has been studied to improve the robustness and stability to uncertain dynamic environments with a proposed contact dynamic model that incorporates human hand dynamics. A simplified hybrid parallel robot dynamic model fur a 6 DOF haptic device was proposed to from a real time control system, which does not include nonlinear components. LQC/LTR scheme was adopted in this paper for the compensation of un-modeled dynamics. The recovery of the farce from the remote robot at the haptic interface was demonstrated through the experiments.

Three kinds of high-speed signaling methods for synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) bus interface channels (PC-133, Direct-Rambus, and SSTL-2) were analyzed in terms of the timing budget and the physical transmission characteristics. To analyze the SDRAM bus interface channels, loss mechanisms and the effective characteristic impedance method were reviewed and the ABCD matrix method was proposed as an analytic and yet accurate method. SPICE simulations were done to get the AC responses and the eye patterns of the three SDRAM bus interface channels for performance comparisons. Recent progress and future trend for SDRAM bus interface standards were reviewed.

Complementary use of several modalities in human-to-human communication ensures high accuracy, and only few communication problem occur. Therefore, multimodal interface is considered as the next generation interface between human and computer. This paper presents the current status and research themes of speech-based multimodal interface technology, It first introduces about the concept of multimodal interface. It surveys the recognition technologies of input modalities and synthesis technologies of output modalities. After that it surveys integration technology of modality. Finally, it presents research themes of speech-based multimodal interface technology.
The residual stresses in the interface region of the Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC)/Thermally Grown Oxide (TGO)/Bond Coat (BC) were calculated on the TBC-coated superalloy samples using a Finite Element Method (FEM). It was found that the stress distribution of the interface boundary was dependent upon mainly the geometrical shape or its aspect ratio and the thickness of TGO layer, which was formed by growth and swelling behavior of oxide layer. Maximum compressive residual stress in the TBC/TGO interface is higher than that of the TGO/bond coat interface, and the tensile stress had nothing to do with change of an aspect ratio. The compressive residual stresses in the TBC/TGO and TGO/bond coat interface region increased gradually with the TGO growth.
Piezoelectric composites of O-3 connectivity were prepared by thermosetting barium titanate-phenolic resin composite under various cruing pressure. Among three kinds of pore in O-3 type ceramic-polymer composite, such as matrix pores, particle pores, and ceramic-polymer interface pores, the effect of interface porosity on the dielectric and piezoelectric constant was investigated. In pure barium titanate ceramics, the porosity factor of dielectric and piezoelectric constants were 5.7 and 5.0, respectively. However, in BaTiO3-polymer composite, the interface porosity factor of the piezoelectric constant was greater than that of the dielectric constant, interface porosity factor b in d33 was 9.8 and in r 4.6. On the other, piezoelectric voltage constant g33 was independent of the porosity of barium titanate ceramics. But in composite system, the piezoelectric voltage constant g33 was decreased with interface porosity.
This paper summarizes the results of a study which uses the recently developed Optical Profile Microscopy technique (Dove and Frost, 1996) as the basis for investigating the role of geomembrane surface roughness on the shear strength of goomembrane/geotextile interfaces. The results show that interface friction can be quantitatively related to the surface roughness of the geomembrane. The peak and residual interface strengths increase dramatically through the use of textured geomembranes as opposed to smooth geomembranes. For the smooth geomembranes, the sliding of the geotextile is the main shear mechanism. For the textured geomembranes, the peak interface strength is mainly mobilized through the micro-texture of the geomembrane, however, the residual interface strength is primarily attributed to macro scale surface roughness which pulls out and breaks the filaments from the geotextile. The results of this study can be extended to the other interfaces such as joints in rock mass, and also can be used to provide a quantitative framework that can lead to a significantly improved basis for the selection and design of geotextiles and geomembranes in direct contact.

This paper describes a design of graphical user interface for a simulated breeding tool with multifield. The term field is used here as a population of visualized individuals that are candidates of selection. Multi-field interface enables the user to breed his/her favorite phenotypes by selection independently in each field, and he/she can copy arbitrary individual into another field. As known on genetic algorithms, a small population likely leads to premature convergence trapped by a local optimum, and migration among plural populations is useful to escape from local optimum. The multi-field user interface provides easy implementation of migration and wider diversity. We show the usefulness of multi-field user interface through an example of a breeding system of 2D CG images.
