To examine the role IM plays, We focus on the factors that promote or hinder communication within a Korean organization when instant messenger is used. These factors were examined through two research questions. To understand these issues, a survey consisting of 33 categories was given to government and corporate office workers in Seoul, Korea. The survey results showed that Instant Messenger is recognized as a powerful communication tool in official organizations, but is only used effectively within groups or generations that do not follow the hierarchical relationships characterized by Confucian values. The results of this study fill a gap in our understanding of the important role of IM use in organizational effectiveness and may prove useful when developing tools and strategies to help promote communication within organizations using information technology media.

The instant messenger (IM) is frequently encountered as a facilitator of communication in both social and working contexts. Nevertheless, there are concerns about the extent to which IMs bring organizational benefits, thereby overcoming interruptions to work. In this study, we focus on how IM tools contribute to knowledge transfer at work, as well as their influence on team performance. Our research model is validated by a survey of work professionals (n=41) at a small sized company. Implications and conclusions are discussed.

Instant messaging(IM) service is one of the useful communication means in the Intemet for exchanging simple messages between users. Usually, IM service is coupled with Presence service which provides status information of users. In this case, instant messages are sent and received directly between on-line users. Therefore, messages could not be exchanged when users are in off-line state. In this paper, We have implemented SIP based Instant Messaging System which includes message server that can store and manage instant messages. With this message server, messages could be exchanged legalness of user states. Furthermore, our system includes message waiting indication event package which provides useful informations about messages in the message server. And this system also includes the Caller Preference capabilities.

Recently, IM(Instant Messenger) of KakaoTalk is being used on smart devices such as smartphones. Because IM service can carry user and/or suspector's various information including life style, geographical position, psychology and crime history, forensic analysis on IM service is desirable. But, forensic analysis for KakaoTalk is not well studied yet. This paper studies a proper forensic method for KakaoTalks, finds artifacts location, reconstruct the list of contacts and the chronology of the messages that have been exchanged by users. Proposed methodology and analyzed information can provide a basic platform for forensic tool.

IM(Instant Messenger) chatting service can carry user's various information including life style, geographical position, and psychology & crime history and thus forensic analysis on the IM service is desirable. But, forensic analysis for KakaoTalk's chatting service is not well studied yet. For this reason, we study KakaoTalk's forensic analysis focusing on chatting service. This paper first details a general method of IM forensics investigating the previous articles about IM forensics although there are not many articles. Second, we discuss methodologies for IM forensics wherein we present analysis of table structure and method for reconstruction of chatting message. These result in the basic element of forensic tools of KakaoTalk chatting message. Last, we compare artifacts of KakaoTalk with that of WhatsApp. We conclude that these applications are, at least, different in that table structures and the ways to reconstruct chatting messages are not same and therefore digital evidences or artifacts are not same and somewhat distinct.

The Instant Messenger(IM) is the most popular personal communication tool today. IM is a tool that can substitute E-mail for a person, and can secure the user for a company. Further, it is claimed as it has a limitless potential. However, there has been several reports on security issues. It has known that the transmitting message is not secured for the attacks, and hacking tools has been developed. In addition, several reports has been made regards to the vulnerability. In other words, anyone can been through and manipulate the messages that are sent or received via IM. This is a barrier for the IM to be developed as a corporate's strategic tool, and furthermore, it will create serious personal privacy issue. IETF IMPP Working Group is preparing a standard mutual relationship between IM. However, it is complicated due to the American On-Lines's absence, whom has ensured the most number of IM users. There was a discussion only about the form of the transmitting data, but it is insufficient state to discuss the security service for general. In this paper, I design and implement the Secure Instant Messaging System, to solve the IM's vulnerability and the security issue presented above.

In this paper, we classify web-based social network into two types: open and community, and model user behavior in social activities. After that, we also propose the combination of instant messaging and web system as the method of support asynchronous/synchronous social activities. Furthermore, we introduce ImCoWeb prototype system that supports both asynchronous social activities (ex. social bookmark, comment, rate, and data share) and synchronous ones (ex. real-time communication, file transfer, co-browsing, and co-work). Because it is built on the existing instant messaging, it reduces costs by reusing the facilities such as session management, user management, and security of instant messaging.

유선 인터넷에서 인스턴트 메신저는 간단한 질문/확인, 만남이나 작업 조정, 사회적인 친교 등을 위해 광범위하게 활용되고 있다. 이를 무선으로 확장하기 위하여 MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, 버디버디, 네이트온 등이 모바일용 메신저를 내놓고 있다. 특히 한국 10대의 경우 SMS를 실시간 대화에 가깝게 (짧고 빈번하게) 사용하고 있기 때문에 무선 메신저는 큰 호응이 있으리라 예상하였다. 그러나 네이트온 모바일 메신저의 경우, 2002년 출시된 이후 별다른 인기를 끌지 못하고 있다. 이에 저자들은 네이트온 사용자들의 사용행태를 분석하여 문제점을 파악하고, 일반 SMS 사용자들과 네이트온 사용자들의 무선 커뮤니케이션 사용행태를 1주일간의 Diary Study에 기초한 Contextual Inquiry (Intermittent)를 실시하여 사용률이 저조한 이유를 분석한 뒤, 퍼소나를 구성하여 무선 환경에 맞는 완전히 혁신적인 새로운 형태의 무선 메신저 사용자 인터페이스를 설계하였다. 메신저에 반드시 있는 사용자 등록이나 친구 추가 기능을 없애고 휴대전화 번호 기반으로 동작하며, 상태 정보(Presence)를 없애면서 상대방 상태에 따라 IM 혹은 SMS로 적절히 변환되어 전달되는 것이 주요 특징이다. 이를 사용자들을 통해 다시 검증해 본 결과 사용자들이 무척 쉽게 받아들이는 것을 발견하였다.

A policy of instant messaging usage is offered in this article. First, a brief introduction of instant messaging system structure is described. The main threats and vulnerabilities of Instant messenger (IM) are described in the second part of the paper. Instant messaging applications offer so many advantages in so many different fields that they're fast becoming the preferred communication tool for a number of different professional scenarios. When properly implemented, instant messaging can be a true asset to the business by making communications easier throughout the organization. If instant messaging is carelessly implemented, though, it can cause problems with privacy and may expose the organization to various forms of malware. The solution offered in this paper is one of the effective ways against threats of IM. However, the system cannot be secured entirely. All we can do is reducing the risks.
