  • This paper presents a novel prototype of active voltage-clamping capacitor-assisted edge resonant soft switching PWM inverter operating at a constant frequency variable power (VPCF) regulation scheme, which is suitable for consumer high-power induction-heating cooking appliances. New generation IGBT with a trench gate is particularly improved in order to reduce conduction loss due to its lowered saturation voltage characteristics. The soft switching load resonant and quasi-resonant inverter designed distinctively using the latest IGBTs is evaluated from an experimental point of view.

  • In DC traction substation with 12-pulse diode rectifiers, the DC line voltage tends to rise above noload voltage because it can't absorb the regenerative power caused by electric brakes of train. To solve this problem, an IGBT regenerative inverter should be installed and recycles the surplus regenerative power by delivering it. to the supply grid. In this paper, the DC traction substation equipped with a IGBT regenerative inverter is studied using computer simulation. Matlab/simulink is used to simulate the operation of regenerative inverter which injects the regenerative power into the supply grid and stabilizes the DC line voltage. It is confirmed that the high quality regenerative power is delivered to the supply grid thorough computer simulation.

  • This paper deals with a new overvoltage snubber for a diode-clamped 3-level IGBT inverter. Usually most power converters use snubber circuits to protect the switching devices from voltage spike. However, it is difficult for the diode-clamped multi-level converter to be protected from voltage spike with overvoltage snubber since the series connection of the switching devices. To solve the problem the characteristic of a overvoltage snubber for a DC-DC converter is analyzed, and a new snubber for a diode clamped 3-level inverter is proposed. The performance of the proposed snubber is verified through experiments.

  • This paper describes the performance improvement of dc TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welder. The TIG welder consists of single phase full bridge IGBT inverter which incorporates the high frequency transformer, the boost converter for improving the input power factor, and the arc start system. The arc will be generated without fail even when the extension cable between the torch and the power source is 100m long. In addition, the arc start system with a short dc output voltage will generate less EMI noise than the traditional arc start system with a high frequency output voltage. To demonstrate the practical significance of the proposed methods, some simulation studies are presented.

  • In this paper, a novel new pulse power generator based on IGBT stacks is proposed for pulse power application. Proposed scheme consists of series connected 9 power stages to generate maximum 60kV output pulse and one series resonant power inverter to charge DC capacitor voltage. Each power stages are configured as 8 series connected power cells and each power cell generates up to 850VDC pulse. Finally pulse output voltage is applied using total 72 series connected IGBTs. The synchronization of gating signal is important for series operation of IGBTs. For gating signal synchronization, full bridge inverter and pulse transformer generates on-off signals of IGBT gating and specially designed gate power circuit was used. Proposed scheme has lots of advantages such as long lifecyle, compact size, flat topped pulse forming, small weight, protection for arc, high efficiency and flexibility to generate various kinds of pulse output.

  • In recent years, the interest in noise increases gradually and the low noise level becomes one of the important performances in electrical equipment for railway vehicle. In the auxiliary power supply, most of the noise is made by the current ripple of alternating current reactor(ACL) which filters the output voltage. And this current ripple results from the voltage harmonics across the ACL. So the noise can be reduced by eliminating the voltage harmonics across the ACL. This paper shows harmonic eliminating technique which is making gating signals of upper and lower inverter have a phase difference in the 12-step inverter type auxiliary power supply. This technique was proved by testing on the developed 180KVA auxiliary power supply using IGBT.

  • This research was carried out experiments of variety IGBTs for industrial inverter and electric vehicle. The devices for this paper were planar gate IGBT, trench gate IGBT and dual gate IGBT and we designed using same design and process parameters. As a result of experiments, the electrical characteristics of planar gate IGBT were 1,459 V of breakdown voltage, 4.04 V of threshold voltage and 4.7 V of on-state voltage drop. And the electrical characteristics of trench gate IGBT were 1,473 V of breakdown voltage, 4.11 V of threshold voltage and 3.17 V of on-state voltage drop. Lastly, the electrical characteristics of dual gate IGBT were 1,467 V of breakdown voltage, 4.14 V of threshold voltage and 3.08V of on-state voltage drop. We almost knew that the trench gate IGBT was superior to dual gate IGBT in terms of breakdown voltage. On the other hand, the dual gate IGBT was better than the trench gate IGBT in terms of on state voltage drop.

  • This paper is on the high perfonnance propulsion IGBT VVVF inverter adopted new technique for railways. To prove the high performance and stabilit~r of traction, running tests are carried out under the simulated condition alike real field. The tests are perfonned on not only a steady states but also a transient states such a as input voltage variation using inertia load equivalent to 160tons train. The vector control technique is a adopted to improve traction for 4 motors. The low switching synchronous PW1\l method based on a space v voltage vector modulation is pro\XlSed as the optimal method for propulsion system railway. The output voltage l is controlled continuously to six step by prolxlsed ovennodu]ation technique without sudden torque variation.

  • Asymmetric electro-magnetic force caused by the frictional worn bearing, rotor misalignment and unbalanced rotor etc. generates an asymmetrical operation, vibration and electro-magnetic noise. The need for detection of these rotor eccentricities has pushed the development of monitoring methods with increasing sensitivity and noise immunity. This paper is proposed the analysis method of the squirrel-cage induction motor driven by IGBT inverter using finite element method (FEM) and subroutine. The effect of the unbalanced magnetic pull in the inverter-fed induction motor which is in asymmetrical whirling motion is presented. The analysis results of rotor eccentricity could compare with motors which have been made normal air-gap motor and irregular air-gap motor and verify reliability. The simulation and experiment results can be useful for on-line faults detection monitoring system of induction motors.
