  • In these days, video applications for special purposes such as video conference systems among multiple users and video surveillance systems require multiple video connections and QoS guarantee. The video systems employ IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN devices to support broadband wireless interfaces and easy internet accesses for cheaper prices. However, according to the current IEEE 802.11e HCCA standard, if more than three video sessions are established in WSTA services, some of them must share the TXOP because the available number of TSIDs for video transmission is two. In order to resolve the problem, we devised a method which can establish up to 15 video sessions by slightly modifying the frame structure while maintaining the compatibility with current standard. Our method is implemented on the NCTUns 4.0 network simulator, and evaluated not only numerically in terms of throughput, delay, and PSNR, but also experimentally in the sense of real video clips that are used as input to our simulation. The results showed that our method sufficiently guarantees the transmission bandwidth requested by each video session.

  • Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) provides Internet accesses to users by forming backbone networks via wireless links. A key problem of WMN is network capacity. For this, multi-channel and multi-rate functions of IEEE 802.11 can be utilized. Depending on channel assignments, multi-channel determines node connectivity and channel diversity. Also, in IEEE 802.11 multi-rate networks, the rate anomaly problem occurs, the phenomenon that low-rate links degrades the performance of high-rate links. In this paper, we propose rate separating multi-channel (RSMC) protocols that improves the node connectivity and channel diversity, and mitigates the rate anomaly problem. RSMC increases the channel diversity by forming tree-based WMNs and decreases the rate anomaly by separating different rate links on the tree via channels. In addition, it uses network connectivity (NC) algorithm to increase the node connectivity. Through simulations, we demonstrate that the RSMC shows improved performance than existing multi-channel protocols in terms of aggregate throughput, node connectivity, channel diversity.

  • The increasing number of wireless subscribers who can use internet service any time and any place have caused wireless communications networks to flourish. However, since total communication channel bandwidth for wireless communications is limited, it is very important to find the solution for maximizing the channel utilization. Thus, in this work we propose a QoS packet scheduler for IEEE 802.11e EDCA scheme which is able to maximize the channel throughput with changing the CW value considering wireless channel condition. This proposed scheme is evaluated with NS-2 network simulator under various environments and it is easily shown from the numerical results that the proposed scheme provides better performance than that of the original IEEE 802.11e scheme.

  • There is a serious problem in an 802.11g VoWLAN (Voice over Wireless LAN) terminal that talk time is less than 30% compared with an 802.11b terminal. It is almost impossible to achieve talk time level of the 802.11b MAC transmission method because IEEE 802.11g uses OFDM modulation, which is a kind of multi-carrier method and OFDM transmission speed is 54 Mbps faster than normal modulation. In this paper, a new concept of a Holdover time as a power saving method during a call with 802.11g terminal is suggested for the first time. Increase in the number of engaged terminals as a result of holdover time causes to QoS problem because of the increase in the number of back-off and then contention window. In this paper, to solve the QoS problem, a new approach is suggested such that when in down lint the sequence number of 802.11 G.711 is analyzed in the MAC of the terminal and then the Hold over time depending on loss rate is changed. Also, consumption of an electric current of 802.11b/g and MAC parameter's performance due to busy traffic caused by increase in the number of terminal are analyzed and then real data using VQT and Airopeek are analyzed.

  • In order to become ubiquitous world, the compatibility of wireless machines has become the significant characteristic of a communication terminal. Thus, SDR is the most necessary technology and standard. However, among the environment which has different communication protocol, it's difficult to make a terminal with only hardware using ASIC or SoC. This paper suggests the processor that can accelerate several communication protocol. It can be connected with main-processor, and it is specialized PHY layer of network The C-program that is modeled with the wireless protocol IEEE802.11a and IEEE802.11b which are based on widely used modulation way; OFDM and CDM is compiled with ARM cross compiler and done simulation and profiling with Simplescalar-Arm version. The result of profiling, most operations were Viterbi operations and complex floating point operations. According to this result we suggested a co-processor which can accelerate Viterbi operations and complex floating point operations and added instructions. These instructions are simulated with Simplescalar-Arm version. The result of this simulation, comparing with computing only one ARM core, the operations of Viterbi improved as fast as 4.5 times. And the operations of complex floating point improved as fast as twice. The operations of IEEE802.11a are 3 times faster, and the operations of IEEE802.11b are 1.5 times faster.

  • This paper presents the analysis and the implementation of the asynchronous communication portion of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol. We have used PRISM2 chipsets from INTERSIL to build baseband, IF, and RF parts and PCI controller from PLX to interface LLC Layer. We have implemented DCF(Distributed Coordination Function) service using CSMA/CA(Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Acoidance) with backoff algorithm and RTS/CTS protocol. Also, we have implemented TSF(Timing Synchronization Function) which can be used for power management frequency hop synchronization, and other management function. This study can be used as a reference for the MAC protocol implementation and MAC controller design in very high speed wireless LAN which complies with the IEEE 802.11 standard.

  • We propose an analytic model to compute the station's saturated throughput and packet delay performance of the IEEE 802.11 DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) in which frame transmission error rates in the channel are different from each other. Our analytic model shows that a station experiencing worse frame error rates than the others suffers severe performance degradation below its deserved throughput and delay performance. 802.11 DCF adopts an exponential back-off scheme. When some stations suffer from high frame error rates, their back-off stages should be increased so that others get the benefit from the smaller collision probabilities. This impact is then recursively applied to degrade the performance of the victim stations. In particular, we show that the performance is considerably degraded even if the frame error rate of the victim station satisfies the receiver input level sensitivity that has been specified in the IEEE 802.11 standard. We also verify the analytic results by the OPNET simulations.

  • In this paper, we propose a performance improving MAC algerian for the IEEE 802.11 DCF. WLAN based IEEE 802.11 uses two control methods called 'Distributed Coordination Function(UF)' and 'Point Coordination Function(PCF)'. The nF controls the Urnsmission based on carrier sense multiple access with collision detection(CSMA/CA), that decides a random backoff time with the range of contention window for each terminal. Normally, each terminal the CW double after collision, and reduces the CW to the minimum after successful transmission. This paper proposes an enhanced DCF algorithm that decreases the CW smoothly after successful transmission in order to reduce the collision Probability by utilizing the current status information of WLAN. We also analyze the throughput and delay performance for the unsaturated case mathematically. Simulation results show that our algorithm enhances the saturation throughput of WLAN. They also coincide well with the analytical results.

  • In this paper, we propose a modeling of the broadcasting in the IEEE 802.11p MAC protocol for the VANET(Vehicular Ad hoc Networks). Due to the fact that the beacon message which is needed for the safety services is shared via broadcasting, the analytical modeling of the broadcasting is crucial for the optimum design of the services. Two characteristics specific to the IEEE 802.11p are reflected in the modeling; the time limited CCH interval caused by the channel switching between the CCH and SCH, and no retransmission of the broadcasted messages. In the proposal, we assumed no restriction on the moment of generation of the beacon messages. We allow the messages to be generated and broadcasted within the whole CCH interval. Simulation results prove the accuracy of the proposed modeling. Noticeable improvements are also observed in terms of the performance indices such as the successful delivery ratio, transmission delay, and the variation of the delay.
