  • The paper surveys various analytical models for IEEE 802.11 medium access control protocols and critically discusses recent issues developing in wireless mobile ad hoc networks and their MACs. The surveyed MAC protocols include the standard IEEE 802.11 MAC suites such as IEEE 802.11 DCF, IEEE 802.11 PCF, IEEE 802.11e EDCA, and IEEE 802.11 ad hoc mode; and also the newer, de facto MAC protocols. We study the analytic models of the standard MAC suites followed by the newer analytic models that have been published in recent years. Also, the paper tries to include most of current literatures discussing analytic modeling of MAC in conjunction to some critical issues such as contention among ad hoc nodes, hidden terminal problems, and real-time service support.

  • We develop a new wireless link quality metric, ECOT(Estimated Channel Occupancy Time) that enables a high throughput route setup in wireless mesh networks. The key feature of ECOT is to be applicable to diverse mesh network environments where IEEE 802.11 MAC (Medium Access Control) variants are used. We take into account the exact operational features of 802.11 MAC protocols, such as 802.11 DCF(Distributed Coordination Function), 802.11e EDCA(Enhanced Distributed Channel Access) with BACK (Block Acknowledgement), and 802.11n A-MPDU(Aggregate MAC Protocol Data Unit), and derive the integrated link metric based on which a high throughput end-to-end path is established. Through extensive simulation in random-topology settings, we evaluate the performance of proposed link metric and present that ECOT shows 8.5 to 354.4% throughput gain over existing link metrics.

  • Efforts for standardization of medium access control (MAC) protocol in IEEE802.11e have been made to support quality of service (QoS) in IEEE802.11e MAC protocol. Enhanced disoibuted coordination function (EDCF) of 802.11e MAC protocol is modified to support QoS for packets that have differentiated priority. However, EDCF still has the problem of throughput optimization and priority support. Therefore, we have proposed a scheme called adaptive EDCF for both supporting priority of packets and throughput optimization. We have derived the relation between the number of nodes and contention window size for throughput optimization. Based on the analytic results, we have evaluated the performance of the proposed scheme using OPNET simulations. The simulation results show that using the proposed scheme can improve the overall throughput regardless of the number of nodes and the decrement of the throughput with increasing the number of nodes can be alleviated. Additionally, we have shown that the adaptive EDCF can support priority of packets more effectively than existing EDCF.

  • The IEEE 802.11 protocol is the most mature technology for WLANs(Wireless Local Area Networks). However, as the number of stations increases, the delay and throughput performance of IEEE 802.11 MAC(Medium Access Control) degrades severely. In this paper, we present the comprehensive performance analysis of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol by investigating the MAC layer packet service time when arrival packet sizes have a general probability distribution. We obtain the discrete probability distribution of the MAC layer service time. By using this, we analyze the system throughput and the MAC layer packet service time of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol in wireless LAN environment. We take some numerical examples for the system throughput and the mean packet service time for several special distributions of arrival packet sizes.

  • In this paper, we propose a design methodology of IEEE 802.11n MAC which aims to achieve the higher throughput of more than 100Mbps in downlink as measured at the MAC-SAP and present the implementation results of MAC using the proposed design methodology. With our proposed methodology, different from the conventional design flow which has the separate codes for the protocol validation, for the network simulation, and for the system implementation, the unified code can be used for the network simulation and the implementation of software and hardware. Our MAC architecture is partitioned into two parts, Upper-layer MAC and Lower-layer MAC, in order to achieve the high efficiency for the new features of IEEE 802.11n standard. They are implemented in software and hardware respectively. The implemented MAC is tested on ARM based FPGA board.

  • Wireless LANs based on the IEEE 802.11 standard are widely spread for use nowadays. Traffic which are conveyed over the WLANs change rapidly from normal data such a Email and Web pages, to multimedia data of high resolution video and voice. To meet QoS (Quality of Service) required by these multimedia traffic, the IEEE 802 committee recently has developed a new standard, IEEE 802.11e. IEEe 802.11.e contains two MAC mechanisms for providing QoS: EDCA(Enhanced Distributed Channel Access) and HCCA (HCF Controlled Channel Access). Using these standardized MAC mechanisms as a building platform, various admission control mechanisms can be combined to offer QoS gurantees for multimedia traffic. This paper surveys these research efforts.

  • IEEE 802.11 WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network) standard is currently developing with increased wireless internet demand. Study trends of IEEE 802.11n for high throughput show two aspects, enhanced system throughput using aggregation among packets in MAC(Medium Access Control) layer, and better data rates adapting MIMO(Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) in PRY(Physical) layer. But, no one demonstrates IEEE 802.11n system performance results considering MAC and PRY connection. This paper adapts A-MPDU(Aggregation-MAC Protocol Data Unit) method in MAC layer and MIMO in PRY layer for IEEE 802.11n system. Consequently, Simulation results show enhanced throughput and data rates compared to existing system. Also, We use NS-2(Network Simulator-2) considering MAC and PRY connection for reality.
