  • This paper presents an improved dynamic programming (IDP) approach to solve the economic power dispatch problem including transmission losses in power systems. A detailed mathematical derivation of recursive dynamic programming approach for the economic power dispatch problem with transmission losses is presented. The transmission losses are augmented with the objective function using price factor. The generalized expression for optimal scheduling of thermal generating units derived in this article can be implemented for the solution of the economic power dispatch problem of a large-scale system. Six-unit, fifteen-unit, and forty-unit sample systems with non-linear characteristics of the generator, such as ramp-rate limits and prohibited operating zones are considered to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The proposed method results have been compared with the results of genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization methods reported in the literature. Test results show that the proposed IDP approach can obtain a higher quality solution with better performance.

  • The optimal reaction conditions are determined for a PET process, which consists of transesteriflcation, prepolymerization and polycondensation reactors in series. Based on the simulation results of the reactor system, we scrutinize the cause and effect between the reaction conditions and the final properties of the polymer product. We then select the process variables with significant influence on the properties of polymer as control variables and calculate the optimal reaction conditions by iterative dynamic programming (IDP) algorithm with constraints. A new reaction scheme incorporating reactions for by-products as well as three main reactions is considered in the constrained IDP method.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an efficient model for the least cost design of multi-site detention systems. The IDP (Incremental Dynamic Programming) model for optimal design is composed of two sub-models : hydrologic-hydraulic model and optimization model. The objective function of IDP is the sum of costs ; acquisition cost of the land, construction cost of detention basin and pumping system. Model inputs include channel characteristics, hydrologic parameters, design storm, and cost function. The model is applied to the Jung-Rang Cheon basin in Seoul, a watershed with cetention basins in multiple branching channels. The application results show that the detention system can be designed reasonably for various conditions and the model can be applied to multi-site detention system design.

  • The use of an Incremental Dynamic Programming (IDP) for real-time flood control operation is investigated. The optimization model has been applied for the Namgang and Andong hypothetical flood control system in the Nakdong river basin. The objective of the operation is defined to minimize the maximum flow at the confluence of downstreams from the two reservoirs. The results are compared to the direct summation of the flood routing results from individual flood control simulation run. It shows that peak flow at the confluence is reduced markedly by reducing peak outflows from individual reservoirs and by balancing the time of the peak release between the two reservoirs.

  • As the number of cafeterias at universities has increased, studies on student perception of price sensitivity at cafeterias have gained increased attention. Therefore, the study investigated the relationship between students and university cafeterias according to price sensitivity measurement (PSM). According to the analysis, the indifference price (IDP) was 3,444.06 Korean Won while the subsequent cumulative distribution percentage was approximately 17.68%. The optimal pricing point (OPP) was 3,233.73 Korean Won and the stress price (IDP-OPP) was 210.33 Korean Won. The point of marginal expensiveness (PME) was 4,602.24 Koean Won and the point of marginal cheapness (PMC) was 2,036.29 Korean Won. Therefore, the range of acceptable prices (RAP) was established as 2,565.95 Korean Won. In addition, the study examined differences between price sensitivity measurement (PSM) for the respondent subgroups. Hence, the results will provide a practical background for development of business plans for university cafeterias.

  • The Gegenschein is a faint glow around the anti-solar point caused by the interplanetary dust particle(IDP)'s back-scattering enhancement. From the previous low resolution observations, the overall morphology of the Gegenschein has been intensively studied. However, sub-degree scale fine structure of the Gegenschein is still not well known, even though the detailed morphology of the Gegenschein within a few degree from the anti-solar point may supply pivotal information about the property of the IDPs. We made optical CCD observations of the Gegenschein between 2003 March and 2006 November. From the observations, we succeeded in making high resolution images of the Gegenschein, with unprecedented 1.'4 resolution. Our results concur with IDP cloud model based on the infrared observations combined with scattering phase function derived from low resolution data. The only exception is the anti-solar point. We found a steep additional brightness enhancement existing at the exact anti-solar point. Plausible explanation of the finding is that the IDPs are significantly larger than observing wavelength, and have irregular morphology or inhomogeneous internal structure. Furthermore, we measured average geometric albedo of the IDPs from the optical brightness of the anti-solar point. The geometric albedo was $0.06{\pm}0.01$, similar to those of comets or C-type asteroids.

  • Current SSO has focused on authenticated integration between inter systems in a domain. On the contrary, becasuse SSO using SAML can support integration between different domains, once it is used in RIA, we can expect highly synergic effect. However, because researches on SSO using SAML are mainly those on authenticated information exchange between servers, a special research is needed in order to be applied in RIA environment, which conducts numerous managements in client. This study proposes architecture and explain a practice structure in order to apply SAML to RIA. Also, this study has embodied the proposed architecture and applied it on DWR, which is used mostly as Data communication framework of RIA, and verified the useablity of this architecture.

  • Many reservoirs have been constructed and operated for utilizing and controlling water in main rivers of Korea since 1960's. New reservoirs are planned to satisfy increasing water demands according to the National Long-Term Water Resources Development Plan, that will make the entire water resources system more complex. That means reasonable approach is necessary to review many alternatives for future policy decision making of water resources management. As an attempting to simplify the water problem of the large-scale reservoirs system with more than 10 reservoirs, two stages approach such as simulation approach(HEC-5) is first applied to medium and small reservoirs and the results are used as inputs to final optimization approach (IDP) including large reservoirs is used in the water budget analysis of Han river water resources. In addition, existing multi-purpose reservoirs and planned reservoirs in Han river are formulated into one system and DPSA is applied to solve the basin-wide water resources assessment problem.
