  • This study was carried out to investigate the applicability of PVC membrane-based ion-selective electrodes for macronutrients (K, Ca, and N) by measuring of potassium, calcium, nitrate ions in hydroponic nutrient solution. The capabilities of two ion-selective membranes with varying chemical compositions for each ion were evaluated in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and lifetime to choose sensing elements suitable for measuring typical ranges of nutrient concentrations in hydroponic solutions. The selected calcium and nitrate ion-selective membranes showed effectively sensitive responses to calcium and nitrate ions with lifetimes of 25 and 15 days, respectively. The addition of a cation additive to the potassium membrane cocktail allowed its sensitivity to be increased whereas its lifetime was reduced from 30 days to 10 days.

  • A simple disposable thick-film potentiometric strip has been developed and evaluated for hydroponics application. The strip consisted of low ion-selective electrodes (ISE) fabricated by screen-printing technology. The electrochemical responses of ion sensors for nitrate, ammonium, potassium, and magnesium were measured with specially designed 16-channel low voltage signal transducers. The analytical characteristics of the sensors were comparable with those of conventional ISE sensors. The thick-film sensors exhibit linear relationships over five concentration decades. The concentration of N $O_3$ - ion in standard solution can be determined by direct potentiometric measurements without any conditioning before measurements. However, measurement of $K^{+}$, N $H_4$$^{+}$, and $Mg^{2+}$ ionic concentrations in nutrient solutions seems not feasible.

  • There are many researches to build up ubiquitous environment by the Ubiquitous Sensor Network(USN). These applications, such as home network, health care, natural environment and agricultural areas, are implemented by an embedded system. Their fields are gradually spreading. However the power consumption in its implementation plays an important role on the surrounding environment of the wireless network. In this paper, we design low power processor based sensor node platform for agricultural applications. We also compare its some performance with existing products.

  • This study was carried out to research the effect of nutrient composition and GA4+7 on growth, flower quality and bulb development in special hydroponics of cut tulip. Flowering of 'Cassini' was markedly accelerated by standard+GA4+7, K200+GA4+7, N250+GA4+7 treatment, last internode was increased by N250 as compared with other treatment. For 'Christmas Marvel', flowering was promoted by K250+GA4+7, last infernode and total length were also increased with K250+GA4+7 as compared to other treatment. For 'Golden Apeldoorn', flowering was accelerated by K200+GA4+7, last internode was increased with N300+GA4+7 treatment and total length was increased in N250+GA4+7 treatment as compared with the standard plants. Bulb weight and number of 'Cassini', 'Christmas Marvel'and 'Golden Apeldoorn' were decreased by GA4+7 as compared to non-treatment, and bulb diameter was not affected by GA4+7.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the quality of ground water for hydroponics in Kyeongnam area in 1995. Water samples were collected and analyzed from 77 wells in green houses throughout Kyeongnam area. The values of several components in well water were as follows ; 7.4 in pH, 0.46dS/m in EC, 0.3mg/L in N $H_{4}$-N, 25.4mg/L in $Ca^{2+}$, 42.6mg/L in C $l^{[-10]}$ and 72.5mg/L in S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$. The pH value showed high positive significance of correlationships with $Ca^{2+}$ and EC. Also, the EC value showed high positive significance with N $a^{+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and C $l^{[-10]}$ .

  • The effectiveness of physiological or chemical acid - alkali solution was investigated as the method to control pH value of nutrient solution in hydroponics dynamically. Lettuces were cultivated using NH$_4$H$_2$PO$_4$ as physiological acid and NaNO$_3$ as physiological alkali or H$_2$SO$_4$ as chemical acid in dynamic control system. The pH of nutrient solution was controlled satisfactorily in the range of pH 5.5-6.5, regardless of treatments. Chemical acid changed pH of solution faster than chemical acid when supplied to the nutrient solution. Any of them did not show any harmful symptom. It is recommended that chemical acid is preferred during the growing stage and physiological acid like as NH$_4$H$_2$PO$_4$ is preferred from several days before harvest stage.

  • This experiment has investigated the effect of growth, yield and fruit quality of fig plant by different concentration of nutrient solution. Nutrient solution for pig plant were three concentrations of the balanced nutrient formula development by Japanese Horticultural Experiment Station. Plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter and number of fruit per plant were the best at 1/2 concentration. However, leaf length and leaf width did not show any difference in other treatment. Fruit length, fruit diameter and soluble solids did not differ from the different concentration of nutrient solutions. However, the fruit weight of fig plant was heavier by hydroponics than by soil culture in 2nd experiment. Early stage growth of fig plant was better at low concentration of nutrient solution and yield was better at high concentration. The result of this experiment will be utilized in the new application for fig plant hydroponics.

  • Effect of potassium phosphonate on control of potato basal stem rot caused by Pythium myriotylum in hydroponics system was evaluated at spring and fall cultivation in Jeju island in 2001. Potassium phosphonate 200 ppm treatment, which was directly supplemented into the nutrient solution, showed 90.5%, and 100 ppm treatment showed 50.5% control value in spring cultivation. Fall cultivation, potassium phosphonate 200 ppm treatment showed 100%, and 100 ppm treatment showed 69.9% control value. Potassium phosphonate 200 ppm treatment, basal stem rot of potato started to develop 10 days ofter inoculation into the hydroponics system showed 8.0% in infection rate. Potassium phosphonate 100 ppm treatment, after 5 days showed 10.0%, and after 10 days showed 20.0% infection rate, but the non-treated was after 5 days showed 56.7%, and after 10 days showed 96.9% infection rate.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of boron treatments on flower spike dieback of Statice (Limonium spp.) grown in soilless hydroponic and soil cultures under rain shelter system. The growth of Statice was gradually improved with increasing boron applications in the hydroponics, but not in soil culture with boron treatment as foliar spray or soil application. The degree of flower spike dieback in 6 levels (0, no dieback incidence to 5, very severe dieback incidence) ranged between 0.5 with boron application and 4.4 with no boron treatment. The content of boron in Statice flower spike increased with increasing rates of boron applications in the hydroponics, but the contents of P, Mg, and N were not affected by the boron application. However, K content was highest with no boron treatment. In soil culture, incidence of flower spike dieback decreased with foliar spray or soil application of boron. Therefore, boron application was effective in reducing flower spike dieback and improving cut-flower productivity and its quality, and the recommended rates of boron application were $50{\sim}80{\mu}gL^{-1}$ for hydroponics culture whereas 0.2% borex or ${\geq}0.4kg\;10a^{-1}$ boric acid by foliar spray application for soil culture.
