This study evaluated a simple and useful route to the synthesis of mesoporous $TiO_2$ microcapsules with a hollow macro-core structure. A hydrophilic precursor sol containing the surfactants in the hydrophobic solvents was deposited on PMMA polymer surfaces modified by non-thermal plasma to produce mesoporous shells after calcination. The surface of the PMMA polymer spheres was coated with $NH_4F$ and CTAB to control the interfacial properties and promote the subsequent deposition of inorganic sols. These hollow type mesoporous $TiO_2$ microcapsules could be applied as an efficient substrate for the immobilization of DNA oligonucleotides.
Plasma Source Ion Implantation (PSII) technique was used for the hydrophilization or hydrophobization of polymer surfaces. Polymers were modified with different plasma gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and tetrafluoromethane, and for varying lengths of treatment time. Plasma ion treatment of oxygen, nitrogen, argon and their mixtures increased significantly the hydrophilic properties of polymer surfaces. More hydrophobic surfaces of polymers were formed after the treatment with tetrafluoromethane. A study of plasma source ion implanted polymers was performed using contact angle measurements and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). The TOF-SIMS spectra and depth profile were used to obtain the information about the treated surfaces of polymers. The permanence of this technique could be evaluated with respect to ageing time. The surfaces treated with PSII gave better stability than other surface modification methods.
CoQ with low melting temperature was exploited to improve its solubility by preparing its solid dispersions (SDs) with a meltable polymer, poloxamer 407 (P 407). P407 can be utilized for a relatively simple, quick, inexpensive, reproducible and potentially scalable manner in the low temperature melting method. CoQ 10 solubility and dissolution increased with increasing concentrations of P 407 in SDs. Comparison of the enhanced dissolution of CoQ 10 from different poloxamers suggested that the preparation of CoQ 10 SDs using P 407 as a meltable hydrophilic polymer carrier could be a promising approach to improve its dissolution.
Ultra-thin films of poly[2-[4-(9-(10-phenyl)anthracenyl)phenoxy)hexyloxy]]-1,4-phenylenevinyleylene(PAHPV) were prepare-d on the hydrophilic ITO substrate by Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique. ${\lambda}_{max}$ in the photoluminescence spectrum of these films was 458nm at the excitation wavelength of 365nm before thermal treatment, which comes from diphenylanthracene side chain of PAHPV. It was also confirmed with UV-Vis spectrometer that ultra-thin LB films of PAHPV precursor polymer were prepared well. After thermal treatment for conjugation of PAHPV precursor polymer, ${\lambda}_{max}$ in the photoluminescence spectrum of these films changed to 365nm, which means that the conjugation of these PAHPV films was completed.
The present paper highlights on the need to understand the correlation of the characteristics of the catalyst layer with the performance of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). This paper deals with the correlation of the platinum loading in the catalyst layer and the performance of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell and also the correlation of the required hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity in the catalyst layer to get the optimum performance under given operating conditions.
To improve antithrombogenicity of polymer that used in vascular graft and artificial organs, seeding of human endothelial cells on the polyurethane was studied. Human endothelial cells were ismlated from human umbilical veins, using type I collagenase, and identified with goat anti vWF antibodies. Human endothilial cell seeding was tried upon the polyurethane which has good mechanical property and resists stresses. The hydrophobic polyurethane surface was changed hydrophilic by corona discharf:e treatment. Surface hydrophilicity was measured with Wilhemly plate method and the goniometer. To evaluate matrix protein adsorption, fibronectin adsorption test was done. To eveluate cell adhesion, human endothelial cell attachment forces were measured rising a perfusion chamber of , ism diamter. Less cells were detached from the hydrophilically treated polyurethane. This showed that corona discharge on the polyurethane could improve matrix adsorption and endothelial cell attachment.

Polymethly methacrylate(PMMA) and polydimethlysiloxane(PDMS) surfaces were treated to improve adhesiveness by irradiation of a Nd:YAG pulse laser beam($\lambda=266nm$). A pulse laser beam was directed on a polymer surface in air, and the number of pulses was controlled by mobile velocity of a motorized stage. The laser treated surfaces were investigated using an optical microscope and a contact angle measuring instrument. It was thereby revealed that the contact angles were decreased in the laser treated surface. This in turn led to an increase of oxygen content and improved adhesiveness on the modified surface. With improved surface adhesion, a fluid channel could be formed on the laser treated surface region.
Equilibrium swelling and pH-sensitivity of a polyelectrolyte copolymer hydrogel were controlled by employing copolymers with different hydrophilic-hydrophobic balances. Model pH-sensitive hydrogels, e.g., poly(methacrylic acid), poly(methacrylic acid-co-acrylamide), poly(methacrylic acid-co-2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate), poly(methacrylic acid-co-styrene) were synthesized at various monomer compositions. As hydrophobicity of the copolymer hydrogels increased, the equilibrium swelling decreased while the pH-sensitivity increased. In the case of poly(methacrylic acid-co-acrylamide), polymer-polymer interaction significantly affected the equilibrium swelling and provided a wide range control of pH-sensitivity.
The low molecular water-soluble chitosan nanoparticles (LMWSC-NPs) were prepared, which was modified with hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties to evaluate the potential for pharmaceutics application. The synthesis of LMWSC-NPs was identified by FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR spectra. Also, we measured the photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) to investigate the characteristics and morphology of the LMWSC-NPs. At the PCS measurement, the more increase the number of substitutive group, the more decrease the positive charge of LMWSC-NP surface. From the results of TEM and AFM, spherical morphologies were observed, and their sizes were 30-150 nm. Resultantly, LMWSC-NPs prepared in this experiment will be expected as a suitable device for the drug targeting system.
In the preparation of a polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) nanocomposite via an in-situ polymerization method, macroazoinitiator (MAI) was intercalated in the gallery of Na-MMT to enhance the delamination of silicate layers by intergallery polymerization. The exfoliated fine dispersion observed by X-ray diffraction pattern and transmission electron microscopy, the enhanced tensile storage modulus and the thermal decomposition temperature showed that the intercalated MAI was effective in inducing intergallery polymerization and that a poly(ethylene glycol) block linked to a PAN block improved the dispersion of hydrophilic Na-MMT in the polymer matrix.
