Glucosylated polyethylenimine (GPEI) was synthesized as a tumor-targeting gene carrier through facilitative glucose metabolism by tumor glucose transporter. Particle sizes of GPEI/DNA complex increased in proportion to glucose content of GPEI, whereas surface charge of the complex was not dependent on glucosylation, partially due to inefficient shielding of the short hydrophilic group introduced. GPEI with higher glucosylation (36 mol-$\%$) had no cytotoxic effect on cells even at polymer concentrations higher than 200 $\mu$g/mL. Compared to unglucosylated PEl. glucosylation induced less than one-order decrease of transfection efficiency. Transfection of GPEI/DNA complex into tumor cells possibly occurred through specific interaction between glucose-related cell receptors and glucose moiety of GPEI. Gamma imaging technique revealed GPEI/DNA complex was distributed in liver. spleen. and tumors.

In this study, the polycarbonate surface was treated by $O_2$/ Ar gases plasma for the enhancement of adhesion with Cu electrode. From the point of view of hydrophilicity and the functionality, the micro-roughness, new functional groups and oxygen content of the polycarbonate surface were increased by the $O_2$/ Ar gases plasma treatment. The Cu films deposited on the as-received polycarbonate were easily detached while, after the$ O_2$/ Ar gases plasma treatment the adhesive Cu films on polycarbonate could be obtained. These results can be explained that the polycarbonate had a hydrophilic surface with uniform micro-roughness and new functional groups by $O_2$/ Ar gases plasma treatment. Therefore,$O_2$/ Ar gases plasma treatment is a promising method for improvement of adhesion between polycarbonate and Cu electrode.

The enhancement of adhesion for Cu film on polycarbonate (PC) surface with the $Ar/O_2$ gas plasma treatment and dc-bias sputtering was studied. The plasma treatment with this reactive mixture changes the chemical property of PC surface into hydrophllic one, which is shown by the variation of contact angle with surface modification. The micro surface roughness that also gives the high adhesive environment is increased by the $Ar/O_2$ gas plasma treatment. These results were observed distinctly from the atomic force microscopy (AFM). The negative substrate dc-bias effect for the Cu adhesion on PC was also investifated. Accelerated $Ar^{+}$ lons in sheath area of anode bombard the bare surface of PC during initial stage of dc bias sputtering. PC substrate. therefore, has severe roughen and hydrophilic surface due to the physical etching process with more activated functional group. As dc-bias sputtering process proceeds, morphology of Cu film shows better step coverage and dense layer. The results of peel test show the evidence of superiority of bias sputtering for the adhesion between metal Cu and PC.C.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural glycosaminoglycan and is used widely in the pharmaceutical field. Lipoic acid (LA) helps the regeneration of exogenous and endogenous antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E as well as glutathione. It also acts as antioxidant indirectly. Hydrophilic HA as a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer was conjugated with hydrophobic LA as an antioxidant to form the graft copolymer. The carboxyl group of HA was modified by adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH). The synthesis of HA-g-LA graft copolymers was characterized by FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy. The conjugates could form the self-assembled nanoparticles in aqueous solution. The particle size and critical aggregation concentration were verified to use the nanoparticle as a carrier fur the hydrophobic material.

Across the most industry, the demand for nanoparticles is increasing. Therefore, many studies have been carried out to synthesize nanoparticles using various methods. The aim of this paper is to introduce an industry-applicable as well as financially and environmentally effective solution plasma process. The solution plasma process involves fewer chemicals than the traditional kit, and can be used to replace many of the chemical agents employed in previous synthesis of nanoparticles into plasma. In this study, this process is compared to the wet-reaction process that has thus far been widely used in the most industry. Furthermore, the solution plasma process has been classified into four different types (in-solution, out of solution, direct type, and remote type), according to its plasma occurrence position and plasma types. Thus, the source of radicals, nanoparticle synthesis, and modification methods are explained for each design. Lastly, unlike nanoparticles with hydrophilic functional groups that are made inside the solution, a nanoparticle synthesis and modification method to create a hydrophobic functional group is also proposed.

The kenaf is quickly developing as a renewable resource. Kenaf can be grown under a wide range of weather conditions. Modification of kenaf fiber by graft polymerization provides a significant route to alter the chemical properties, including surface hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity. In this study, kenaf fiber surfaces were grafted with acrylic acid as a hydrophilic group using electron beam irradiation. The grafting rate increased with an increase in grafting time. The FT-IR results confirmed that acrylic acid was successfully grafted onto the kenaf fibers. The wettability of the kenaf fiber was increased, accompanied by acylic acid grafting on the fiber surface. According to the permeability test result, it was found that acrylic acid grafted kenaf fiber reinforced cement composite was more reduced than non-grafted kenaf fiber reinforced cement composite.
The pKa values of benzyltetrahydrothiophenium halides 1a-f in water have been estimated by measuring the absorbances of the solution in aqueous hydroxide ion solution. Assuming that the ratios of the activity coefficients remains close to unity, the absorbance of the solution can be expressed as A/[SH]o=(εSH+εS-K[OH-])/(1+K[OH-]), where A, [SH]o, K, εSH, and εS- are the absorbance of solution, the initial concentration of 1a-f, the equilibrium constant, and the extinction coefficients for SH and S-, respectively. The εS- and K values that best fit with this equation were calculated by a nonlinear regression analysis with a large number of absorbance data determined at different [OH-] and [SH]o. The pKa values of the SH were then calculated with the relationship Ka=-log K+14. The validity of this method has been demonstrated by the excellent agreements between the experimental and literature pKa values of three organic acids. The pKa values of 1a-f estimated by this method are in the range of 12.5-15.3 and correlate well with the Hammett equation. The large negative deviation for the pKa values of 1e and 1f from the Hammett plot has been attributed to the extra hydrogen bonding between the phenyl group and water molecules attracted by the hydrophilic substituents.

Objectives : Hyaluronic acid(HA) is a mucopolysaccharide, occuring naturally in living organisms. It is one of the most hydrophilic molecules, so it has been known as being related to skin hydration and skin aging. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of Angelica gigas(A. gigas) ethanol extract on hyaluronic acid synthesis. Methods : To determine cytotoxicity and hyaluronic acid synthase 2 gene expression, hyaluronic acid production in HaCaT cells, MTT assay and RT-PCR ELISA was used. Results : There were no cytotoxicity in $50{\mu}g/ml$ concentration A. gigas extract in MTT assay. Hyaluronic acid synthase 2(HAS2) gene expression was increased by all treated concentration A. gigas extract. Hyaluronic acid production was higher than control group in $50{\mu}g/ml$ & $100{\mu}g/ml$ concentration A. gigas extract. Conclusions : Hyaluronic acid production was increased by A. gigas extracts. Therefore, We suggest that A. gigas can make a contribution to the moisturizing effect on human skin.

Icing causes various serious problems, where water vapor or water droplets adhere at cold conditions. Therefore, understanding of ice adhesion on solid surface and technology to reduce de-icing force are essential for surface finishing of metallic materials used in extreme environments and aircrafts. In this study, we controlled wettability of aluminum alloy using anodic oxidation, hydrophobic coating and lubricant-impregnation. In addition, surface porosity of anodized oxide layer was controlled to realize superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity. Then, de-icing force on these surfaces with a wide range of wettability and mobility of water was measured. The results show that the enhanced wettability of hydrophilic surface causes strong adhesion of ice. The hydrophobic coating on the nanoporous anodic oxide layer reduces the adhesion of ice, but the volume expansion of water during the freezing diminishes the effect. The lubricant-impregnated surface shows an extremely low adhesion of ice, since the lubricant inhibits the direct contact between ice and solid surface.
Three kinds of macro-reticular bead-typed chelating resins having thiol groups were obtained from basic resins like poly(strene-co-divinylbenzene) (PSD) and poly(styrene-co-methyl methacrylate-co-divinylbenzene) (PSMD): the chelating resin (I) was prepared by chloromethylation of phenyl rings of PSD followed by thiolation using thiourea. The chelating resin (ll) was designed to provide enough space to chelate heavy metal ions; one chloromethyl group was obtained by chlorination of hydroxymethyl group provided by reduction of carboxylic ester group of PSMD and another chloromethyl group was obtained by direct chloromethylation of pendent phenyl group using chloromethyl methyl ether. Both of chloromethyl groups were thiolated by using thiourea. The chelating resin (III) was prepared by chlorosulfonation of phenyl rings of PSD followed by thiolation using sodium hydrosulfide. The adsorbtivity toward heavy metal ions was evaluated. The hydrophobic chelating resin (I) with thiol groups showed highly selective adsorption capacity f3r mercury ions. However, the chelating resin (II) with thiol groups showed mere effective adsorption capacity toward mercury ions than chelating resin (I) with thiol groups, and showed some adsorption capacity for other heavy metal ions like Cu$\^$2+/, Pb$\^$2+/, Cd$\^$2+/ and Cr$\^$3+/. On the other hand, the chelating resin (III) which have hydrophilic thiosulfonic acid groups was found to be effective adsorbents for some heavy metal ions such as Hg$\^$2+/, Cu$\^$2+/, Ni$\^$2+/, Co$\^$2+/, Cr$\^$3+/ and especially Cd$\^$2+/ and Pb$\^$2+/.
