  • This paper introduces a novel hybrid converter combining a full-bridge soft switching converter and a full-bridge LLC converter. In this topology all the primary switches can achieve ZVS and ZCS all over the operation range. An additional switch and a diode are added in the secondary side of full-bridge converter to eliminate the circulating current and to provide a separate freewheeling path. The hybrid structure makes it possible to deliver the power to the secondary all the time of operation, thereby improving the efficiency. The proposed topology is suitable for the applications such as on-board chargers for electric vehicles and high power dc-dc converters. A 6.6-kW prototype converter was implemented and 97.5% efficiency was obtained through the experiments.

  • Electronic and telecommunication industries are constantly trying to develop compact components having high power density. Therefore, a proper heat dissipation method is very important to allow reliable operation of the telecommunication equipment. In this study, a hybrid refrigeration system for a telecommunication equipment room was designed to save energy consumption and improve reliability of the compressor In addition, the performance of the hybrid refrigeration system was measured with a variation of outdoor load. The designed hybrid refrigeration system for the telecommunication equipment shelter saved the energy approximately 50%e at the mode switch temperature of $8.3^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper describes a prototype of 3-phase 3.3kV/220V 6kVA modular semiconductor transformer developed in the lab for feasibility study. The developed prototype is composed of three single-phase units coupled in Y-connection. Each single-phase unit with a rating of 1.9kV/127V 2kVA consists of a high-voltage high-frequency resonant AC-DC converter, a low-voltage hybrid-switching DC-DC converter, and a low-voltage hybrid-switching DC-AC converter. Also each single-phase unit has two DSP controllers to control converter operation and to acquire monitoring data. Monitoring system was developed based on LabView by using CAN communication link between the DSP controller and PC. Through various experimental analyses it was verified that the prototype operates with proper performance under normal and sag condition. The system efficiency can be improved by adopting optimal design and replacing the IGBT switch with the SiC MOSFET switch. The developed prototype confirms a possibility to build a commercial high-voltage high-power semiconductor transformer by increasing the number of series-connected converter modules in high-voltage side and improving the performance of switching element.

  • The power density and heat dissipation rate per unit area of the telecommunication equipment have been increased with the technology development in the footprint of telecommunication hardware. A proper heat dissipation method from the PCB module is very important to allow reliable operation of its electronic component. In this study, a hybrid air-conditioner for the telecommunication equipment room was designed to save energy and obtain system reliability. For high outdoor temperatures, the hybrid system operates in the vapor compression cycle, while, for low outdoor temperatures, the hybrid system works in the secondary fluid cooling cycle with no operation of the compressor. The performance of the hybrid air-conditioner was measured by varying outdoor and indoor temperatures. The hybrid air-conditioner yielded 50% energy saving compared with the conventional refrigeration system when the mode switch temperature was $8.3^{\circ}C$.

Smart Multiple-Tap System Based on WiFi for reduction of Standby-Power

  • In this paper, we proposed a smart multiple-tap system which a remote user with smartphone can control multiple-taps in order to reduce standby-power consumption more conveniently when plugged-in electric appliances are turned-off. Recently, several researches of smart multiple-tap using IoT technology has reported. However, in these researches, an additional device like as a server computer is necessary, or multiple-taps could be only remotely controlled by smartphone and not directly controlled by on/off switch. The proposed smart multiple-tap system does not need any additional device only if it has a WiFi router, and it can be used for user as well as remote control using smartphone application and physically direct control using contact switches like existing multiple-taps. Our approach is to develop a smart multiple-tap device capable of WiFi communication can each serve as a server or a client, and can be operated by the hybrid switch combining the on/off contact switch and the relay switch. We implemented the prototype of the proposed system composed of the smart multiple-tap device and the smartphone application, and the test of the prototype validates the proposed system.

Self-powered hybrid electromagnetic damper for cable vibration mitigation

  • This paper presents the design and the application of a new self-powered hybrid electromagnetic damper that can harvest energy while mitigating the vibration of a structure. The damper is able to switch between an energy harvesting passive mode and a semi-active mode depending on the amount of energy harvested and stored in the battery. The energy harvested in the passive mode resulting from the suppression of vibration is employed to power up the monitoring and electronic components necessary for the semi-active control. This provides a hybrid control capability that is autonomous in terms of its power requirement. The proposed hybrid circuit design provides two possible options for the semi-active control: without energy harvesting and with energy harvesting. The device mechanism and the circuitry that can drive this self-powered electromagnetic damper are described in this paper. The parameters that determine the device feasible force-velocity region are identified and discussed. The effectiveness of this hybrid damper is evaluated through a numerical simulation study on vibration mitigation of a bridge stay cable under wind excitation. It is demonstrated that the proposed hybrid design outperforms the passive case without external power supply. It is also shown that a broader force range, facilitated by decoupled passive and semi-active modes, can improve the vibration performance of the cable.

광학적 상호연결을 이용한 네트워크-온-칩에서의 스위치 구조와 라우팅 최적화 방법 (Switch Architecture and Routing Optimization Strategy Using Optical Interconnects for Network-on-Chip)

  • 최근 네트워크-온-칩(Network-on-chip)에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있는 가운데 반도체 칩 복잡도 증가와 고성능에 대한 요구로 인해 기존 구리 기반의 상호연결(Copper-based interconnects)을 사용할 경우 성능, 전력, 대역폭 등에 대한 설계 한계에 곧 직면할 것으로 보인다. 이 문제에 대한 대안으로 전기적인 상호연결(Electrical Interconnects, EIs)과 광학적 상호연결(Optical Interconnects, OIs)을 상호 보완적으로 사용하는 방법이 제안되고 있다. 이러한 연구 방향의 일환으로, 본 논문에서 광학적 상호연결은 지연 시간을 감안하여 임계 경로에, 전기적인 상호연결은 비 임계 경로에 적용하며, 두 상호연결을 혼용하여 사용하기 위한 효율적인 하이브리드 스위치 구조와 라우팅 최적화 방법을 제안한다. 모의실험 결과 제안한 알고리즘과 구조를 적용할 경우 전기적인 상호연결만을 사용 할 경우보다 최대 25%의 속도 향상과 38%의 소비 전력 감소를 나타냈다.

Control and Analysis of an Integrated Bidirectional DC/AC and DC/DC Converters for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle Applications

  • The plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are specialized hybrid electric vehicles that have the potential to obtain enough energy for average daily commuting from batteries. The PHEV battery would be recharged from the power grid at home or at work and would thus allow for a reduction in the overall fuel consumption. This paper proposes an integrated power electronics interface for PHEVs, which consists of a novel Eight-Switch Inverter (ESI) and an interleaved DC/DC converter, in order to reduce the cost, the mass and the size of the power electronics unit (PEU) with high performance at any operating mode. In the proposed configuration, a novel Eight-Switch Inverter (ESI) is able to function as a bidirectional single-phase AC/DC battery charger/ vehicle to grid (V2G) and to transfer electrical energy between the DC-link (connected to the battery) and the electric traction system as DC/AC inverter. In addition, a bidirectional-interleaved DC/DC converter with dual-loop controller is proposed for interfacing the ESI to a low-voltage battery pack in order to minimize the ripple of the battery current and to improve the efficiency of the DC system with lower inductor size. To validate the performance of the proposed configuration, the indirect field-oriented control (IFOC) based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed to optimize the efficiency of the AC drive system in PHEVs. The maximum efficiency of the motor is obtained by the evaluation of optimal rotor flux at any operating point, where the PSO is applied to evaluate the optimal flux. Moreover, an improved AC/DC controller based Proportional-Resonant Control (PRC) is proposed in order to reduce the THD of the input current in charger/V2G modes. The proposed configuration is analyzed and its performance is validated using simulated results obtained in MATLAB/ SIMULINK. Furthermore, it is experimentally validated with results obtained from the prototypes that have been developed and built in the laboratory based on TMS320F2808 DSP.

  • A multiprocessor system for high-speed processing of hybrid image coding algorithms such as H.261, MPEG, or Digital HDTV is presented in this study. Using a combination of highly parallel 32-bit microprocessor, DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform), and motion detection processor, a new processing module is designed for the implementation of high performance coding system. The sysyem is implemented to allow parallel processing since a single module alone cannot perform hybrid coding algorithms at high speed, and crossbar switch is used to realize various parallel processing architectures by altering interconnections between processing modules within the system.

  • 본 논문에서는 Ad Hoc Network에서 사용되는 proactive 라우팅 프로토콜과 reactive 라우팅 프로토콜의 혼합인 hybrid 라우팅 프로토콜에 대해 제안하였다. 본 논문에서는 기존의 hybrid라우팅 프로토콜이 ZRP와는 달리 Ad hoc 네트워크를 구성하는 노드들 중에 네트워크 서비스를 제공해주는 특별한 노드를 설정하여 라우팅 하는 방법을 제안한다. 이러한 역할을 해주는 특별한 노드를 본 논문에서는 C-Node라 부른다. C-Node를 이용한 라우팅으로 기존의 라우팅 프로토콜보다 경로 설정 시간과 flooding시간을 줄임으로서 효율적인 라우팅을 수행할 수 있게 된다.
