Report on red muscardine(Paecilomyces fumosoroseus) of the silkworm(Bombyx mori) in Korea (국내 미기록 누에 적강균(Paecilomyces fumosoroseus)에 관한 보고)

  • Red muscardine (P. fumosoroseus), first observed on silkworm in Korea, was examined on its cultural characters, infection process, and symptoms. The fungus on PDA medium was grown to 44 mm in diameter in 14 days. Conidiaphore ws 1.45$\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter, producing 4 to 6 phialides (5.9$\mu\textrm{m}$${\times}$1.8$\mu\textrm{m}$) in cluster. Elliptic conidia wre hyaline and 2.9${\times}$1.3$\mu\textrm{m}$ in size. Diseased silkworm showed typical symptoms of muscardine while becoming stiff. On 3 to 4 days after inoculation of P. fumosoroseus conidia upon the surface of silkworm, it was observed that the silkworm moved and ate less in rearing bed, and amorpnous dark spots of 1∼2 mm appeared on the surface o thorax, abdomen, spirace, and etc. Corrected mortality reached up to 97% at 9th day after inoculation.

  • Castleman`s disease is a rare disease entity of unknown etiology, with the characteristics of large, well marginated benign lymph node hyperplastic mass. This disease occurs predominantly in the mediastinum but also occurred in other areas of the body usually where lymph nodes are normally found. They have been divided into two histologic types: the hyaline vascular lesion which comprises over 90% of the cases; the plasma cell lesions, which was characterized by large follicle with plasma cell and systemic manifestation, such as fever, anemia elevated ESR, hypergammaglobulinemia, hypoalbuminemia. This disease have behaved in a benign fashion and complete surgical excision is the choice of treatment. We experienced a case of Castleman`s disease which was treated by surgical resection through the thoracotomy, and has good postoperative and follow up result. We report a case of the Castleman`s disease with its review.

  • Several methods to resurface the lost cartilage of the knee have been used, multiple drilling, microfracture, abrasion arthroplasty Resurfaced cartilages resulting from above techniques are mostly fibrocartilage. Autologous osteochondral graft transfer and autologous chondrocyte transfer are known to resurface the lost cartilage with mostly hyaline cartilage. This article reviews basic researches, indications, operative technique, and clinical results of autologous osteochondral graft transfer.

Penicillifer diparietisporus: a New Record from Field Soil in Korea

  • A fungus was isolated from field soil collected from Daegu, Korea. The colony of the isolated fungus showed short, branched, and light to dark yellow pigments with hyaline, yellowish red to orange brown aerial mycelia. In addition, the fungus produced solitary to aggregated perithecia, ovoid to pyriform, short neck, and asci as well as biseriately arranged ascospores. Phylogenetic analysis using the internal transcribed spacer region and translation elongation factor $1-{\alpha}$ sequences and morphological characteristics identified the isolated fungus as Penicillifer diparietisporus, which belongs to the family Nectriaceae. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Penicillifer diparietisporus in Korea.

New Korean records of two amoeboid protozoa (Protist); Vannella bursella and Pseudoparamoeba sp.

  • Two marine amoebae Vannella bursella (Page, 1974) Smirnov et al., 2007 and Pseudoparamoeba sp. were encountered from marine coastal waters of Masan Bay and Garorim Bay (Korea), respectively. These species are described with uninterpreted records based on light-microscopy of living cells and reported taxonomically for the first time from Korea. Diagnostics of these species are as follows. Vannella bursella: size in vivo, $17-29{\mu}m$ long with flattened ovoid, semicircular locomotive forms. Pseudoparamoeba sp.: size in vivo, $10-15{\mu}m$ long with elongated locomotive forms, producing a few short conical pseudopodia from anterior hyaline zone.

  • Myoepithelioma is histologically composed exclusively of myoepithelial cells. Myoepithelial cells are present in the major and minor salivary glands. Salivary gland neoplasms that frequently contain myoepithelial cells are the pleomorphic adenoma, adenoid-cystic carcinoma, and epithelial myoepithelial carcinoma of intercalated duct origin. Neoplasms composed exclusively of myoepithelial cells are rare. Myoepitheliomas may be composed of spindle-shaped cells, plasmacytoid(hyaline) cells, or combination of both in varying proportions. A case is reported of plasmacytoid myoepithelioma with ultrastructural confirmation, together with reviews of the English literature.

  • Pulmonary surfactant is a lipoprotein complex composed primarily of phospholipid and lungspecific apoproteins that reduces surface tension in the alveolus and maintains alveolar stability at low lung volume. Three families of lung-specific apoproteins have been described: SP-A, a glycoprotein with a reduced molecular weight of 28~36 KDa. SP-B a hydrophobic protein with a nonreduced molecular weight of 18 KDa, and SP-C a hydrophobic protein with a non-reduced molecular weight of 5~8 KDa. Surfactant proteins have important roles in regulating surfactant metabolism as well as in determining its physical properties. The synthesis of the active surfactant peptides appears to be modulated by system with considerable complexity, including numerous levels of regulation such as cell-specific, hormonal and developmental controls. Endotoxin appears to alter surfactant protein mRNAs differentially. It is hoped that the elucidation of the factors controlling the synthesis and metabolism of the surfactant proteins will aid in understanding the pathogenesis of hyaline membrane disease and offer new avenues for the therapy and diagnosis of ther pulmonary disorders as well.

First Report of an Unrecorded Nematode-Trapping Fungus Species Monacrosporium phymatopagum in Korea

  • A fungus that can capture nematodes by means of sessile adhesive knobs was isolated from rotten wood in Uiseong, Korea. It was found to produce single, spindle-shaped, 3-4 septate (commonly 4-septate) conidia, $44.8\;{\mu}m$ (range, $41.6-50.1\;{\mu}m$) long and $13.3\;{\mu}m$ (range, $10.7-15.4\;{\mu}m$) wide. Conidiophores were found to be hyaline, erect, straight, and $202.7-245.7\;{\mu}m$ high. On the basis of these morphological features, the fungus was identified as Monacrosporium phymatopagum. This is the first report of M. phymatopagum in Korea which can be a potential biological control resource of plant parasitic nematode.

  • We report a case of fine needle aspiration cytology of endodermal sinus tumor of the ovary. A 13-year-old girl complained of abdominal mass and pain. The abdominal sonography revealed a well-demarcated huge mass, which was solid and multiseptated. Percutaneous fine needle aspiration was performed from the mass. The smears revealed moderate cellularity, which was arranged in sheets or clumps of pleomorphic malignant cells on mucoid background The valuable characteristic features of tumor cells were papillary configuration, vacuolated cytoplasm and intracellular and extracellular hyaline globules. The diagnosis was confirmed later by histologic study of surgical resection of the specimen.
