  • The purpose of this study was to better assess and understand current needs and wearing sensation, including clothing behavior for early elderly women in the Korea and USA. The subjects in this study were 135 and 173 early elderly women in the Korea and USA. This research was done by a survey method and chi-square test. The major objectives of this study were as follows; First, it was found that the early elderly women of Korea utilize mostly human information as information source when purchasing clothing, whereas those of USA mostly media information. The women of Korea were found to put most emphasis in esthetic aspects of clothing, whereas those of USA in comfort. The most frequently worn clothes by the early elderly women of Korea were jumper, T-shirt and slacks, whereas jacket, sweater and slacks by those of USA. As for skirt, flare skirt was highly preferred in Korea, whereas A-line skirt in USA. Second, regarding the wearing sensation of ready-made clothing, the wearing sensation of jacket was found to be worst on the shoulder in Korea, whereas on the waist in USA. And the early elderly women of both Korea and USA had poor wearing sensations due to the length of sleeve, of trouser, of skirt and of one-piece dress. The comparison of the clothing behavior and wearing sensation of the early elderly women between Korea and USA showed a greater difference in clothing behavior than in wearing sensation.

  • In the field of 'Human Vibration', it has been interested subjects to make equal sensation curves related to translational and rotational direction of whole-body, hand-transmitted and head-transmitted vibration, etc. When we consider the vibration of a vehicle, the main factor is vertical whole-body vibration. Until now, most of equal sensation curves used to derive frequency weighting function had been made using Western people. However, because of the inherent differences (for example, characteristic and shape of body parts, muscular and cellular tissue) between the Western people and the Oriental people, equal sensation curves based on Oriental people might be required. Also, the weight differences between the samples which consist of average-weighted and over-weighted group might cause the difference of equal sensation curves. So, in this study, 20 male Korean people were used to find equal sensation curves subject to vertical whole-body vibration on seated posture. Among 20 males, an over weighted group consisted of 10 male persons and an average weighted group was the others. Integrating and analyzing the data of two groups, some of non-parametric tests such as 'The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test' and 'The Mann Whitney U test' were used.

  • This study aims to investigate the relation between pressure, 3D length change, and subjective pressure sensation in sports brassieres. Seven Korean women in their 20s and 30s were chosen as subjects. In the experiment, the subjects evaluated four types of sports brassieres wherein the lower band was changed. The results of the study were as follows. The pressure according to the measurement position was lower at the front part than at the side and back parts (p<.05), and there was no difference in the pressure according to the brassiere type. It was observed that brassiere C, which had the higher extension band, was elongated more than the other brassieres when worn. In the case of brassiere B, which had a slit in the front center, it was observed that the 3D length of the front part changed very little as the slit spreads, and the back part stretched in a manner similar to those of the other brassieres. Subjective pressure sensation was statistically different only at the front and the side of the lower band. Brassiere B(with a silt) demonstrated the least subjective pressure sensation; the pressure sensation was high when wearing brassieres A and D (p<.05). Brassieres B and C were also preferred for overall comfort. In conclusion, it was observed that the substitution of material and morphological transformation affect subjective sensation.

  • In this paper, we suggest a haptic mouse system as an immersive interface between virtual environment and a human operator. The proposed haptic mouse creates vibrotacitle and thermal sensation to increase the immersion. The vibrotactile module is composed of eccentric motors and a solenoid actuator, and the thermal module consists of a thin-film resistance temperature detector and a Peltier thermoelectric heat pump. In order to evaluate the proposed haptic mouse system, we develop a simple racing game and conduct an experiment. The result of the experiment shows that the proposed haptic mouse system can improve the sense of reality in virtual environment and can be used as an effective interface between virtual environment and a human operator.

  • This research aims to invest consumers' purchase behavior and preference of F/W season knit wear to prepare for basic data in producing competitive knit wear which can meet consumers' demands. The results are as follows: 1. Consumers in their twenties are largely purchasing their knit wear at bonded clothing shops, consumers in their thirties at outlet stores and consumers in their forties and fifties at department stores. As for preferred materials in knit wear, the twenties like 100% of cotton, the thirties mixed wool, and the forties and the fifties 100% of wool. Across all age groups, they prefer knit wear pattern with no figures, while they consider its design and color as important factors in purchasing F/W knit wear. 2. As for the wearing sensations of F/W knitwear of three age groups, there are not significant differences in other factors except a factor of 'jacket length'. 3. As for the fitting sensation about F/W knit wear, consumers with 'thin' somatotype feel high comfort in the factor of 'girth', while consumers with standard somatotype feel high satisfaction in the factor of 'length'.

  • This study was to decided the proper garment pressure level on the human body parts. Six volunteers (female: 30-40years) put on the same types of bands, a brief, and a non-woven gown. Garment pressure was measured in regular order with the elastic band on the human body parts such as the upper arm, the waist, the thigh, and the calf. At the same time, physiological responses such as the skin blood flow rate on 2 fingers, 7 different skin temperatures, rectal temperature, heat rates, and subjective responses about the pressure sensation, thermal sensation, and humidity sensation were measured and inquired. The results were as follows; 1. The thicker subcutaneous fat thickness, the higher the mean garment pressure on pressurizing the upper arm(p<.001). Also the thicker subcutaneous fat thickness. the thicker the upper arm circumference. 2. Heart rates increased pressured the upper arm and decreased pressured the waist, the thigh, and the calf. The higher the garment pressure, the higher heart rates on all body parts were pressured. Especially lean subjects showed higher physiological load than others. 3. On pressurizing the upper arm, heart rates, rectal temperature, and mean skin temperature were higher than without pressured state and pressured other body parts.4. The proper garment pressure levels were decided 30gf/$cm^2$ for fat people, 20gf/$cm^2$ for others on the upper arms and 24gf/$cm^2$ on the calf.

  • For investigating restriction in the use of computer modeling results without adjusting them with measured data, this study analyzed and compared microclimatic aspects and human thermal sensation between in situ measurement and computer modeling using ENVI-met in and around a small urban park of downtown Changwon in May, 2012. In the results, ENVI-met underestimated air temperatures and wind speeds than the measured ones and overestimated relative humidities. In the radiation analysis, ENVI-met overestimated solar radiation from the sky hemisphere and terrestrial radiation from the ground hemisphere and underestimated terrestrial radiation from the sky hemisphere. Also, the differences of mean radiant temperatures with the measured ones reached up to 19.6℃ which could create an 1.2 PMV difference. ENVI-met overestimated up to 2.3 PMV and 4℃ UTCI at 12:00. The difference was shown clearly in PMV than in UTCI. Therefore, when computer modeling is used in urban microclimate and human thermal sensation (comfort) studies the modeling results should be compared with measured data and adjusted adequately to adopt the results to urban and landscape planning and design.

  • In order to help develop more comfortable seat cover fabrics, this study primarily surveyed the actual using conditions and the consumers' opinions of the seat cover fabrics. The results of this study were as follows: 1) The colors of seat cover fabric were mostly achromatic. Regarding comsumers' satisfaction on the colors of seat cover fabric, comsumers in their 20's were less satisfied than other age groups. Most unsatisfied consumers prefered bright colors. 2) On the materials of seat cover fabric, synthethic leather and woven were most widely used. Real leather was most prefered due to its luxury and tactile sensation. Woven was secondarily prefered due to its price and tactile sensation. About fourty percent of consumers covered the seat with other cover fabrics because of soil and other reasons. It will be useful if they could choose and change the seat cover fabircs with different materials and colors. 3) When consumers used the seat cover fabrics, the problems that they indicated were not durability and colorfastness but low breathablity during sweating, static electricity, soil, firmness, and cool sensation at the first contact.

  • Cooling garments are being considered for reducing heat strain in hot environment. We evaluated the effectiveness of ice gel-based cooling vest in hot environment both resting and exercising. Four male subjects were exposed to heat(4$0^{\circ}C$, 50%RH) with vest or without it. The results were as follows; In case of the trial wearing ice gel-based cooling vest, total body weight loss, and local sweat volume were less than those without it. Mean skin temperature, rectal temperature, pulse, energy expenditure, temperature of inside clothes, and humidity of inside also were lower than those without cooling vest. By subjective thermal sensation, subjective humidity sensation, and thermal comfort sensation, it was proved that non-wearing vest decreased comfort than wearing that. These results suggested that wearing ice gel-based cooling vest reduced human heat strain in hot environment both resting and exercising.
