  • As far as fishing vessels are concerned, there are two aspects to be noted: One is the stability which is the greatest concern for the safety of fishing vessels, as the corresponding number of casualty is overwhelming compared with those of other types of vessels. To flake it worse, the feature of casualty is rather catastrophic, accompanying major fatalities. The other aspect is related to the needs of improvement of resistance performance along with the hull form development. In particular, small fishing vessels, such as under 24m in length, which is dominant size in the type, need further scrutiny to enhance the qualities mentioned above, as relevant standards/criteria on the issues are not shown clearly and, therefore, implemented for the design or assessment.

  • In these days, the pollution of marine environment near island at Korean coastal zone caused by the trash, human waste and livestocks excreta become series problem. One of the most economic and efficient way to prevent this pollution problem is to set up island circulating incineration system. In this paper, the results of feasibility study on the application of turtle boat hull form to the incinearting vessel has been summarized especially for the resistance and course keeping point of view.

  • In this paper, CFD simulation results for a tanker model are compared with experimental data over a range of wave conditions to verify a capability to predict the sea-keeping performance of practical hull forms. CFD simulations are conducted using WISDAM-X code which is capable of unsteady RANS calculations in arbitrary wave conditions. Comparisons are made of unsteady surface pressures, added resistance and ship motions in regular waves for cases of fully-loaded and ballast conditions of a large tanker model. It is shown that the simulation results agree fairly well with the experimental data, and that WISDAM-X code can predict sea-keeping performance of practical hull forms.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate resistance of 10 different cowpea cultivars which were introduced from the United States against two major root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne arenaria and M. incognita, that affect greenhouse crop cultivation in Korea. The results showed that the resistance of the tested cultivars to the root-knot nematodes varied with the cultivar. Texas Cream 40 showed moderate resistance to M. arenaria whereas the other cultivars were susceptible. Purple Hull Pinkeye and Texas Pinkeye Purple Hull were found to be resistant to M. incognita, whereas Mississippi Silver showed moderate resistance and the other cultivars were susceptible. As the cultivars exhibit resistance to M. arenaria and M. incognita, such cultivars resistant to root-knot nematodes should be considered during the cultivation of cowpea as a green manure crop.

  • The resistance performance evaluation of general ships using computational fluid dynamics requires a lot of time and cost, and various methods are being studied to reduce the time and cost. Existing methods using main particulars or cross sections of ships have limitations in estimating resistance performance that is greatly dependent on the shape of the ship. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network model that can quickly predict the resistance performance of the hull surface by inputting the geometric information of the hullform mesh. The proposed deep neural network model based on Perceiver IO can immediately predict resistance performance, unlike computational fluid dynamics techniques that require calculation in each time step. It shows the result of estimating the resistance performance with an average error of less than 1% in the data set for a 50 K tanker ship, a type of low-speed full ship.

  • In this study, numerical hull form development of a platform supply vessel, a full scale with the overall length of 26.75m, was performed to predict a bare-hull resistance and a large scale of model tests with a 1/10 scaled model were conducted to verify the success of numerical results. Numerical analysis on heave and pitch motion as a function of encounter frequency and ship's speed for the prediction of seakeeping characteristics are also presented. The experiment results of resistance agreed well with numerical analysis. As a result in the motion response characteristics, the heave RAO indicates high values with the range of encounter frequency 1.8~2.0. The Pitch RAO indicates high motion response characteristics at Beaufort scale No. 3 and 4 in rough seas.

  • In the design of high speed fishing vessel, it's hull form has to be decided from a view point of resistance and propulsion performance without neglection of seakeeping characteristics. In spite of many efforts, the performance improvement by hull form itself has it's limitations, specially for high speed craft. In this paper, a study on the improvement of performance for high speed planing hull type fishing vessel has been introduced.

  • The new concept of hull form for G/T 19 ton class off-shore long liner was studied with the support of special research fund of Korean Ministry of Science and Technology. Newly developed hull form of semi-twin afterbody combined with part. curvilinear type forebody shows outstanding improvement in resistance performance point of view compared with hard chine form, especially at the range of high speed.

  • Guilloton's wedge method is extended to evaluated velocity components on and around a ship hull. A ship is divided into a number of layers each of which is approximated by the superposition of so many wedges. These wedges start from the stations evenly placed along the length of the ship. The Michell potential is used to obtain the field generating properties of a wedge. The derivatives of this potential represent then the velocity components induced by the wedge. Superposition of velocities induced at a fixed field point by all the wedges placed at the appropriate positions to approximate the hull will result in the velocity associated with the ship at a particular speed.
