Objectives: This study evaluated the association between work related characteristics and hypertension among white collar workers in Korea. Materials and methods: This study was based on the Third Korean Working Conditions Survey(KWCS) conducted in 2011 among workers 15 years of age or older. The total number of individuals included in the analysis was 10,365 white collar workers. Results: The prevalence rate of hypertension was 3.7% among men and 1.0% among women. In multiple logistic analysis the adjusted odds ratio showed statistically effective association to hypertension. For work related characteristics, 1.73 (95% confidence interval, 1.22-2.46) resulted for large-company workers compared with the small-company group, 2.14 (95% CI, 1.22-3.75) for the long working hours group (61 or above) compared with short working hours group(52 or below), 1.78(95% CI, 1.08-2.95) for night shift workers compared with day workers, and 1.54 (95% CI, 1.18-2.01) for high job stress workers compared with low job stress workers. Conclusions: This study showed that it is important for workers to manage their work environment in order to prevent hypertension by modifying their types of work.
The purpose of this study was to examine the impacts of various stressors among dual-earner families on parenting stress and marital satisfaction. Using a survey data collected from 168 dual-earner couples, this study investigated impact of various stressors, including husband division of labor, the satisfaction of childcare arrangement, husband's support on wife's outside work, family socioeconomic status, and strains from job. The finding suggested that, after controlling background variables(length of marriage, the number of children, and family income), high husbands' support on wife's outside work and low strains about their work hours had influenced on higher parenting stress among fathers, while high strains about their work hours had related to high parenting stress among mothers. It also found that high satisfaction on childcare arrangement and low depression were the factors predicting higher marital satisfaction of mothers, and high support on their wife's outside work, low work role strain, low depression, and low parenting stress had influenced on higher marital satisfaction among fathers. Discussions and recommendations for future research were added.

This paper empirically analyzes economic impacts of policy instruments and suggests policy alternations to improve the urban poor's alternatioes to improve the urban poor's standard of living in Korea. By estimating a joint decsim model of hours of work and housing demand utilizing a sample of 270 urban poor housholds, the study finds that the efects of policies dre diverse. The dncome subsidy to msst effectwe in increasing comsumption while the wage increase is least likely to decrease hours of work. Policy suggection are firstly that policies to ward the urban poor should hot be overlapping or contradictory, and secondly that the policies should be able to increase the poor's wage earning abiliby.

In construction sites, small-scale construction quantities or limited work hours below the daily work volume may occur due to on-site conditions. For small-scale quantities, the input of equipment and labor is designed based on an hourly basis in the invoice, resulting in a difference from the actual cost. In this study, we aim to explore solutions from the perspective of construction cost standards to secure appropriate construction costs for small-scale and time-limited construction sites. Firstly, to preserve the basic construction costs on-site, we established standards where half the cost would be charged for construction quantities below four hours and a full day's cost would be designed for construction quantities between four to eight hours. Additionally, realistic construction cost calculation standards are expected to be provided by realizing a surcharge rate for work hour limitations to secure appropriate construction costs.

The Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry has a culture of long working hours that sometimes extend to weekends. As a result, construction employees find it challenging to achieve a balance between their work and personal lives. It is believed that there is rarely a clear separation between employees' work and personal life in the AEC industry. This paper suggests that in order to attract and retain a talented workforce, AEC organizations have to cater for the diverse needs of employees with regard to work-life balance. This paper presents the results of a survey of both professional and managerial employees' perspective on work-life conflict issues in private and public AEC organizations. Perspectives were found to differ, although not significantly, by employees' experience, leadership experience, age and gender. Furthermore, most survey respondents noted that their employers did not have a policy or program in place supporting work-life balance initiatives. Finally, although the AEC industry is making strides to improve work-life balance, the effort is lagging behind other industry sectors in providing policies and programs to promote work-life balance through flexible work hours and various other means.
The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in perceived time pressure between employed and non-employed married women in Korea. The sample of married couple from the Korean Time Use Survey 2009 (n = 6,948 couple diaries) was used to examined the difference in the level of perceived time pressure over the life cycle of two group. This study also investigated the married women's time use, husband's time use as well as hour of domestic outsourcing and whether such factors are associated with lowering perceived time pressure of married women. Results showed employed wives felt almost 3 times more time pressed than non-employed wives, and the gap mostly remained over different life cycles. Total work hours were associated with increasing the time pressure of both groups of women, while regenerating time was associated with ameliorating time pressure. The result suggests that the time pressure gap between employed and non-employed wives can be partly due to the relative length of total labor hours and regenerating time among the two groups. Ordered logit analysis revealed that husband's paid work hours were not associated with wive's feeling rushed, but husband' unpaid work hours were positively linked with time pressure of their wives. Results indicated if employed or non-employed wives are feeling very busy, there is a high chance that husband might give them some help. We found employed wives spend more hours on housework outsourcing, and purchasing goods for housework was not associated with lowering the feeling of pressure of employed wives. There were both similarity and difference in factors associated with women's feeling pressed among employed and non-employed wives. It implies that social process and it's strategies to alleviate the time pressure can be different by women's employment status.

Background: In today's modern world, longer working hours, shift work, and working at night have become major causes of the disruption of our natural circadian rhythms. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the type of shift work (rotating vs. fixed day), duty period (on-duty vs. off-duty), and working period within each shift (nighttime vs. daytime) on the circadian rhythm characteristics of nurses who provide direct patient care. Methods: This cross-sectional study used a purposive sampling method. Cosinor analysis was applied to analyze the actigraphy data of nurses providing direct patient care for seven consecutive days. The linear mixed effects model was then used to determine any variances between shift type, duty period, and working period within each shift for the nurses. Results: The mesor value did not differ according to nurses' shift type, duty period, and working period within each shift. The amplitude was statistically higher in on-duty nurses and in daytime working hours. The acrophase was significantly delayed in nighttime working hours. As well as nurses in rotating shift had experience. Conclusion: Our findings revealed that the peak activity of nurses occurs significantly later at night while working and nurses working during nighttime hours may have a weaker or less distinct circadian rhythm. Thus, this study suggests that limits be placed on the number of rotating nighttime shifts for nurses.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between fatigue and work-related factors in workers. Methods: A total of 204 subjects aged between 21 and 59 were selected through convenient sampling. Data were collected with a self-reported questionnaire from May 20 to 31, 2011. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN 17.0. Results: Difference in fatigue according to general characteristics was significant according to duty type. Difference in fatigue according to occupational characteristics was significant according to work intensity, work speed, demand of work concentration, work space, physical environment, largest weight by hands, vibration, visual demand of work, difficulty of work practice, work stress, and rest hours in holiday. There was a positive correlation between fatigue and occupational characteristics. Stepwise multiple regression analyses showed that educational level, work intensity, and rest hours in holiday were the strongest factors associated with fatigue ($R^2$=.363 p<.001). These factors explained fatigue by 36.3%. Conclusion: The findings of this study may be useful in understanding workers' fatigue and developing more specific fatigue relief programs.

The standard estimation system, used to estimate the predetermined cost of construction work, is measured by the standard and typical construction methods and field conditions. And the standard estimation system is applied to basic data for the measuring of construction cost, such as the consumed quantity of material, labor hours, and machinery cost. However it does not reflect sufficiently for the diversity and reality of constructions work Therefore, this study is recognized the necessity of new cost estimation models for the rational construction cost estimation. To improve estimation technique and construction ability, it was analyzed labor hours, production volume based on the work crew in construction work.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the work environments of dental hygienists to their occupational diseases in a bid to provide some information on their health care, health promotion and the prevention of occupational diseases. Methods : The subjects in this study were 300 dental hygienists who worked in Seoul, urban communities involving large cities and rural areas. One-on-one interviews and a self-administered survey were implemented with their consent. Results : The findings of the study were as follows: 1. 60 percent of the dental hygienists investigated replied that they had occupation-related physical symptoms. By the length of service, the dental hygienists who worked for six to 10 years had the most symptoms. 2. Out of the occupation-related symptoms, the most prevalent symptom was a pain in the shoulders and neck(41%), followed by a pain in the lower back, a pain in the legs, a pain in the wrists and skin diseases. The most painful parts of the body were hands and arms. 3. In regard to the relationship between the general characteristics and the intensity of pain, the highest group of the dental hygienists in Seoul replied that they had a severe pain, and the lowest number of those in the large cities gave the same answer. 4. Concerning the cause of occupational diseases, 65.7 percent cited the wrong posture. 5. As to relationship between the general characteristics and regular hospital-visit experiences for the prevention of pain during work hours, many of the dental hygienists who were in their 40s and 50s visited hospitals from time to time, and many of those in their 20s never did that. 6. In regard to links between the general characteristics and an opinion on the necessity of regular education, many of the respondents from Seoul and urban regions involving large cities considered it necessary to receive education on a regular basis. By daily work hours, the highest number of those who worked for eight hours or less considered that necessary, and lots of those who worked for 11 hours didn't consent to that. The gaps between them were statistically significant(p<0.05). Conclusions : Given the findings of the study, daily work hours and length of service were two integral factors to affect the regular hospital-visit experiences and pain, and the wrong posture was identified as the most common cause of occupational diseases. To ensure the successful prevention of occupational diseases, dental hygiene students should be taught the importance of occupational disease before they start to work, and supplementary education should be provided for dental hygienists to work in the right posture.
