  • The theory for a novel fault-tolerant 4-active-pole homopolar magnetic bearing is developed. If any one coil of the four coils in the bearing actuator fail, the remaining three coil currents change via an optimal distribution matrix such that the same opposing pole, C-core type, control fluxes as those of the un-failed bearing are produced. The hompolar magnetic bearing thus provides unaltered magnetic forces without any loss of the bearing load capacity even if any one coil suddenly fails. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the novel fault-tolerant, 4-active pole homopolar magnetic bearings.

  • Fault tolerant control method for 6-pole homopolar magnetic bearings are presented. If some of the coils or power amplifiers suddenly fail, the remaining coil currents change via a novel distribution matrix such that the same magnetic forces are maintained before and after failure. Lagrange multiplier optimization with equality constraints is utilized to calculate the optimal distribution matrix that maximizes the load capacity of the failed bearing. Some numerical examples of distribution matrices are provided to illustrate this control method.

  • The magnetic bearing is an important element for high-speed system, such as semiconductor equipment and machine tools. Particularly, The homopolar magnetic bearing has the advantages of lower power losses, more space for heat dissipation and coil winding. This paper deals with analysis and comparison of the homopolar magnetic bearing according to four different PM structures. On the basis of these results, we find one homopolar magnetic bearing superior to the others. finally, this paper derive force characteristic equation for this model and deals with comparison of between analytical and FE results.

  • The theory for a fault-tolerant control of homopolar magnetic bearings is developed. New coil winding law is utilized such that control fluxes are isolated for an 8-pole homopolar magnetic bearing. Decoupling chokes are not required for the fault tolerant magnetic bearing since C-core fluxes are isolated. If some of the coils or power amplifiers suddenly fail, the remaining coil currents change via a distribution matrix such that the same magnetic forces are maintained before and after failure. Lagrange multiplier optimization with equality constraints is utilized to calculate the optimal distribution matrix that maximizes the load capacity of the failed bearing. Some numerical examples of distribution matrices are provided to illustrate the theory. Simulations show that very much the same dynamic responses (orbits or displacements) are maintained throughout failure events while currents and fluxes change significantly.

  • In comparison with conventional motors, Superconducting Homopolar Synchronous Motors (SHSMs) have advantages that it generates high magnetic field by superconducting winding. Therefore, superconducting coil used in SHSM can reduce the motor size and enhance the motor efficiency for high torque applications under the space constraints for propulsion system. During the design process of SHSM, it is required to evaluate the performance of initial design model, that is accurately analyzed using 3D magnetic field modeling large air-gap and flux distribution of axial direction is properly taken into account. In this paper, we analyze magnetic field of a homopolar motor with a 4-pole homopolar rotor and a stator of 3 phase windings. The field analysis is done using 3D finite element analysis which can reflect the end effect and overhang winding. And we extract mutual inductances between a rotor wind and the 3 stator windings. The extracted inductances are used for evaluation of overall motor performances that are calculated with generalized circuit theory of electrical machines.

  • This paper develops the theory for a novel fault-tolerant, permanent magnet biased, 4-active-pole, double plane, homopolar magnetic bearing. The Lagrange Multiplier optimization with equality constraints is utilized to calculate the optimal distribution matrices for the failed bearing. If any of the 4 coils fail, the remaining three coil currents change via a novel distribution matrix such that the same opposing pole, C-core type, control fluxes as those of the un-failed bearing are produced. Magnetic flux coupling in the magnetic bearing core and the optimal current distribution helps to produce the same c-core fluxes as those of unfailed bearing even if one coil suddenly fails. Thus the magnetic forces and the load capacity of the bearing remain invariant throughout the failure event. It is shown that the control fluxes to each active pole planes are successfully isolated. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the new theory.

  • The theory for a new electromagnetically biased diskless combined radial and axial magnetic bearing is developed. A typical magnetic bearing system is composed of two radial magnetic bearings and an axial magnetic bearing. The axial magnetic bearing with a large axial disk usually limits rotor dynamic performance and makes assembling and disassembling difficult for maintenance work. This paper proposes a novel electromagnet biased integrated radial-axial magnetic bearing without axial disk. This integrated magnetic bearing uses two axial coils to provide the bias flux to the radial and axial air gaps of the combined bearing. The axial magnetic bearing unit in this combined magnetic bearing utilizes reluctance forces developed in the non-uniform air gaps such that the axial disk can be removed from the bearing unit. The 4-pole homopolar type radial magnetic bearing unit is also designed and analyzed. Three dimensional finite element model for the bearing is also developed and analyzed to illustrate the diskless combined magnetic bearing.

  • In this paper, a new compact active magnetic bearing(AMB) is proposed in which radial and axial bearings are integrated in one bearing unit. It consists of four U-shaped cores circumferentially connected by yokes and two-layer coils for radial and axial controls. For the radial control action, it has the same principle as conventional homopolar AMBs, while for the axial control, it uses the Lorentz force generated by the interaction of the bias flux for radial control and the axial control flux. The proposed structure makes it easy to design a compact AMB because it has no disk for axial control. This paper introduces the proposed structure, principle, and design process based on the magnetic flux analysis. By using a control algorithm with feedforward action to compensate the coupled flux effect, the feasibility of the proposed AMB is experimentally verified.
