Critical Flux with Respect to Aeration Rate for the Submerged Microfiltration Hollow Fiber Membrane in the Activated Sludge Solution (활성슬러지 수용액 내 침지식 정밀여과용 중공사막의 산기량에 따른 임계 투과유속)

  • In this study critical permeation flux was measured by the flux-step method with respect to aeration rate. The hollow fiber membrane module which has $85cm^2$ of effective area and $0.4{\mu}m$ nominal pore size was submerged in the activated sludge solution of MLSS 5,000 mg/L. The critical flux for without aeration was measured of $15.2L/m^2{\cdot}h$. However, the critical flux increased from 20.6 to $32.5L/m^2{\cdot}h$ as the aeration rate increased from 100 to 1,000 mL/min.

  • SiC hollow fiber was fabricated by curing, dissolution and sintering of Al-PCS fiber, which was melt spun the polyaluminocarbosilane. Al-PCS fiber was thermally oxidized and dissolved in toluene to remove the unoxidized area, the core of the cured fiber. The wall thickness ($t_{wall}$) of Al-PCS fiber was monotonically increased with an increasing oxidation curing time. The Al-PCS hollow fiber was heat-treated at the temperature between 1200 and $2000^{\circ}C$ to make a SiC hollow fibers having porous structure on the fiber wall. The pore size of the fiber wall was increased with the sintering temperature due to the decomposition of the amorphous $SiC_xO_y$ matrix and the growth of ${\beta}$-SiC in the matrix. At $1400^{\circ}C$, a nano porous wall with a high specific surface area was obtained. However, nano pores grew with the grain growth after the thermal decomposition of the amorphous matrix. This type of SiC hollow fibers are expected to be used as a substrate for a gas separation membrane.

  • Cellulose triacetate (CTA) polymer among cellulose esters were used for preparing hollow fiber membranes by phase separation method to investigate the gas permeation properties. To endow gas separation properties, 1,4-dioxane and LiCl were used as additives in the polymer dope solution. The spinning conditions including spinning temperature were controlled to form an active skin layer on the hollow fiber surface. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine morphology of surface and cross section of the prepared CTA hollow fibers. The gas permeation performance of CTA hollow fiber membranes showed $P_{CO2}$ = 17 GPU and ${\alpha}_{CO2/N2}$ = 48.

  • In this study, composite hollow fiber membranes were developed for the recovery of olefin monomers in polyolefin industry off-gases. Polyetherimide (PEI) hollow fiber support membranes were fabricated from spinning solutions containing PEI, NMP and polyethylene glycol (PEG). The influence of dope solution and inner coagulant composition on the permeation properties and structure of hollow fiber supports was examined. PDMS was used as a selective layer and coated on PEI hollow fiber support. The thickness of active layer was controlled by changing coating solution concentration. The permeation properties of hollow fiber supports and composite membranes were characterized with a pure gas permeation test. The optimized composite hollow fiber membrane has $10\;{\mu}m$ selective layer and shows excellent separation performance; the ideal selectivity of olefins over nitrogen is in the following order: 1-butylene (6.4) > propylene (17) > ethylene (97), which selectivity data are similar to the intrinsic olefin/nitrogen selectivities of PDMS. This confirms that the new composite hollow fiber membranes suitable for olefin off-gas recovery has developed successfully.

  • Adsorptive permeation hollow fiber membrane (APM) has been developed for effectively separating $CO_2$ from gas mixture. Inside the APM, zeolite 13X particles were uniformly dispersed without covering their surfaces by a symmetric porous structure of polypropylene lattice. In this study, $CO_2/N_2$ mixture was used as a simulated gas mixture. Separation was achieved by adsorbing $CO_2$ on the zeolite particles in the APM and then permeating $N_2$ into permeate side in passing all the feed gas through the APM. Adsorptive permeation tests were carried out with a set of APM modules, and the adsorptive permeation performances of the modules were analyzed from the test results. After saturation of the adsorbent with $CO_2$, the APM was regenerated by desorption of $CO_2$ from it through vacuuming both inside of outside of the APM hollow fiber, and the regeneration process of the APM by vacuuming was discussed in terms of regeneration efficiency and energy consumption.

Study on the Removal of Water Vapor Using PEI/PEBAX Composite Hollow Fiber Membrane (PEI/PEBAX 복합 중공사 막을 이용한 수분 제거에 관한 연구)

  • In this research, PEI/PEBAX composite hollow fiber membrane was used for the removal of water vapor from gases. PEI (Polyetherimide) substrate membrane was spinned by dry-wet phase inversion method and coated with PEBAX (Polyether block amides) 3533 and PEBAX1657. Fabricated fibers typically had an asymmetric structure of a dense top layer supported by a sponge-like substructure through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). $H_2O/N_2$ mixture gas was used to compare the performance of separation according to temperature, pressure and water activity. The results of PEBAX3533 and PEBAX1657 composite membranes respectively showed $H_2O/N_2$ selectivity of 61.7~118.5 and 85.3~175.4 according to operating conditions. PEBAX3533 composite hollow fiber membranes module showed the water vapor removal of 90%.
