  • The researcher looked at the differences in views and various controversies surrounding Korean youth sexuality education in the wake of the Nth Room incident, which had a great impact on modern Korean society. Sex education for adolescents in Korea can be divided into public sex education through school sex education and the Youth Sexuality Center, and conservative/traditional Protestant sex education. Public sex education is partly influenced by feminist sexual ethics and comprehensive sex education abroad. Based on gender sensitivity and the right to sexual self-determination, four major projects are prevention of sexual harassment, prostitution, sexual violence, and domestic violence. However, the school sex education standard was criticized for stereotypes of gender roles and gender-discriminatory content, reinforced distorted myths about sexual violence, and exclusion of sexual diversity and various family types. Conservative/traditional Protestantism is based on the normal family ideology such as bisexual marriage, premarital chastity, and sexual ethics recognized only within marital relationships. It is a form of confrontation with public sex education while strongly opposing it. The researcher first analyzed the characteristics of public sex education, conservative/traditional Protestant sexual ethics and sex education, feminist sex ethics and sex education, and overseas youth sex education, respectively, while composing the curriculum for Korean youth sexuality education. And as a more fundamental solution to youth sexuality education, I pointed out that there are limits to asceticism, premarital chastity, gender sensitivity and sexual self-determination education, and found an alternative to the concept of body and sex in feminist theology. The researcher pointed out that it is necessary to reconceptualize the body and sex under the recognition that the most fundamental cause of distorted sexual culture is dualistic sex and understanding the body, centering on the research of various feminist theologians. And this was conceptualized into three concepts: holistic sexuality, mutual solidarity understood in relationships with others, and sexuality as a spirituality that extends to the global community. And with each curriculum, 1) Holistic Sexuality: Breathing, Narrative, Making the Shape of One's Body and Mind 2) mutual solidarity : Feeling the Breath of Others, Media Literacy through Conscientization, Sending a Good Wind 3) Sexuality as a spirituality that extends to global concern: It was proposed to pay attention to nature and to co-cultivate it, to listen to the earth's moans and create a new way of life, and to write a prayer with the earth and fellow living beings.

  • The purpose of the study is to develop major types of scoring rubrics of portfolio system, and estimate the reliability of the rubrics developed. The portfolio system was developed by Science Education Laboratory, Chongju National University of Education in summer, 2000. The portfolio is based on the Unit 2, The Layer and Fossil, and Unit 4, Heat and Change of Objects at fourth-grade level. Four types of scoring rubrics, holistic-general, holistic-specific, analytical-general, and analytical-specific, were developed. Students' portfolios were scored and inter-rater and intra-rater reliability were calculated. To estimate inter-rater reliability, 3 elementary teachers per each rubric(total 12) scored 12 students' portfolios. Teachers who used analytical-specific rubric scored only six portfolios because it took much more time than other rubrics. To estimate intra-rater reliability, second scoring was administered by two raters per rubric in two and half month. The results show that holistic-general rubric has high inter-rater and moderate intra-rater reliability. Holistic-specific rubric shows moderate inter- and intra-rater reliability. Analytical-general rubric has high inter-rater and moderate intra-rater reliability. Analytical-specific rubric shows high inter- and intra-rater reliability. The raters feel that general rubrics seems to be practical but not clear. Specific rubrics provide more clear guidelines for scoring but require more time and effort to develop the rubrics. Analytical-specific rubric requires more than two times of time to score each portfolio and is proved to be highly reliable but less practical.

  • The convergence and consilience in education (hereafter, interdisciplinary education) is receiving great attention from societies. This study aims to investigate the works of scientists and artists who have intended to combine science with the arts in the modern era, to take into account the socio-philosophical setbacks during the period, and to suggest pedagogical implications of science education as interdisciplinary education. The concept of interdisciplinary education stems from Plato's thought, idea, as a comprehensive and invariant truth. The renaissance, full of enrichment about scientific achievement, was based on Neo-Platonism pursuing holistic-synthetic approach. During the time, scientists presented in this study tried to find comprehensive principles and borrow useful method from the arts. In such a context, scientists not only made use of the arts for expression of scientific knowledge, but also drew conclusion by analogical reasoning between science and the arts. Artists, as well, relied upon anatomy and optics especially, to elaborate linear perspective and even developed their own scientific knowledge through personal experience. Hence, contemporary science education should encourage students to hold a holistic viewpoint about science and the arts, articulate explicit goals and outcomes as interdisciplinary education, implement meta-disciplinary instruction about science and the arts, and develop assessment framework for collaborative learning. There may be good examples for inter-disciplinary education as listed: illustrating scientific ideas through the arts and vice versa, organizing collaborative works and evaluations criteria for them, and stressing problem solving on a daily basis.

  • Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practice is still popular among the Malaysian population nowadays although western or allopathic medicine is the first line of treatment. Dissatisfaction with health services and therapeutic effects of western medicine or preference for holistic, integrative approach in treatment are common reasons favouring the increasing popularity of CAM practices. The efforts toward integration of CAM and western medicine in Malaysia were rather slow and in a piece-meal fashion. Strategic efforts in strengthening government and self-regulation among practitioners, formalizing education, promoting research, and cultivating national and international networks are necessary to achieve an integrative system. Regulations to restrict the practice and sale of CAM products to licensed practitioners, strict and mandatory registration of the practitioners, inclusion of CAM in essential medicines list, and pricing regulations must be comprehensively discussed. Development of curriculum, offers of scholarship and incentives, promotion of courses and seminars for professionals is necessary to increase the numbers of CAM experts. Malaysia should follow the efforts of other countries on the production and documentation of local CAM data, allocation of funding, and establishment of research centres to assess the efficacy of potentially useful local products. Local and international collaboration in research and continuous education is important for exchange of knowledge and skills. In conclusion more coordinated efforts in regulation of CAM practice and products, formalizing CAM training and education would significantly move the process forward and allow the public to enjoy more health benefits from CAM practice in Malaysia.
