Nurses' Self-Image Perceived by Clinical Nurses: An Application of Q-Methodology (임상간호사가 지각한 간호사 자아상: Q 방법론적 접근)

  • Purpose: The views, perceptions, and feelings of nurses themselves would be important to quality of nursing and professionalism, and turnover intentions. The purpose of this study was to identify nurses 'self-image to develop a customized program. Methods: The Q-methodology which is to create a typology was used. The 40 selected Q-statements from each of 35 participants were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a nine point scale. The collected data were analyzed using a PC-QUANL program. Results: Three types of nurses 'self-image were identified: 'proactive self-image', 'critical self-image', and 'adaptive self-image'. Two consensus items in three types were extracted: 'need to develop healing therapies to overcome the constant tension and exhaustion from work', and 'just think as a colleague than the senior-junior relationship. Conclusion: The results is the typology and this leads to further research.

  • The underwater radiated noise can be reduced by decreasing the structure borne noise of the on-board equipment. Therefore, the structure borne noise of the onborad installed equipment is strongly restricted by ROK navy with MIL-Std 740-2. Usually, the vibration transmissibility from the equipment to the hull of the ship is dependent on its mount characteristics. Even though the double mount structure is proper to apply for ship board application rather than single mount, it is not widely applied due to the weight and volume resriction of the ship. Therefore, in this research, the base using sandwitch panel which can act as double mount structure is suggested and its noise reduction capacity is verified with analytic calculation as well as experiment.

  • The origin of the inhomogeneous distribution of photoluminescence (PL) peak wavelength on a commercial 2" GaN wafer for green light emitting diode has been investigated by wide momentum transfer (Q) range x-ray diffraction (XRD) profile of InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells. Near the GaN (0004) Bragg peak, wide-Q range XRD (${\Delta}Q$ > $1.4{\AA}-1$) was measured along the growth direction. Wide-Q XRD gives precise and direct information of ultra-thin InGaN quantum well structure. Based on the QW structural information, the variation of PL spectra can be explained by the combined effect of temperature gradient and slightly uneven flow of atomic sources during the QW growth. In narrow variations of indium composition and thickness of QW, an effective indium composition can be a good character to match structural data to PL spectra.

  • This work is for the preliminary study for the calibration of an $^{192}Ir$ brachytherapy source based on an absorbed dose to water standards. In order to calibrate brachytherapy sources based on absorbed dose to water standards using a clyndirical ionization chamber, the beam quality correction factor $k_{Q,Q_0}$ is needed. In this study $k_{Q,Q_0}s$ were determined by both Monte carlo simulation and semiexperimental methods because of the realistic difficulties to use primary standards to measure an absolute dose at a specified distance. The 5 different serial numbers of the PTW30013 chamber type were selected for this study. While chamber to chamber variations ran up to maximum 4.0% with the generic $k^{gen}_{Q,Q_0}$, the chamber to chamber variations were within a maximum deviation of 0.5% with the individual $k^{ind}_{Q,Q_0}$. The results show why and how important ionization chambers must be calibrated individually for the calibration of $^{192}Ir$ brachytherapy sources based on absorbed dose to water standards. We hope that in the near future users will be able to calibrate the brachytherapy sources in terms of an absorbed dose to water, the quantity of interest in the treatment, instead of an air kerma strength just as the calibration in the high energy photon and electron beam.

Applicability Investigation of E.coli, RNA and DNA Bacteriophages for Possible Indicator Microorganisms Based on the Inactivation Effectiveness by UV (UV 불활성화 효과에 의거한 E.coli, RNA 및 DNA 박테리오파지의 대체 지표 미생물로서의 적용성 검토)

  • This study compared UV and UV/$H_2O_2$ inactivation of E.coli, a possible indicator microorganism for fecal contamination of water, and $Q{\ss}$ phage, an indicator for pathogenic viruses. UV inactivation of $Q{\ss}$, T4 and lambda phages in actual secondary effluent was investigated, too. As a result, similar inactivation efficiency between $Q{\ss}$ phage and E.coli was observed during UV treatment, while $Q{\ss}$ phage showed higher resistance to UV/$H_2O_2$ than E.coli. $Q{\ss}$ phage resistance to UV or UV/$H_2O_2$ does not reflect those of all pathogenic viruses. However, the result tells that the use of E.coli inactivation efficiency in evaluating microbiological safety of water could not always ensure the sufficient safety from pathogenic viruses. Meanwhile, $Q{\ss}$ phage showed less resistance to UV than T4 and lambda phages, indicating that the use of $Q{\ss}$ phage as an indicator virus may bring insufficient disinfection effectiveness by causing the introduction of lower UV dose than required. Consequently, it can be thought that T4 or lambda phages would be more desirable indicators in ensuring the sufficient disinfection effectiveness for various pathogenic viruses.

Antioxidant Activity and Protective Effect of Leaf Extract from Diospyros lotus on Oxidative Stress of Red Blood Cells (고욤 잎 추출물의 항산화 활성 및 적혈구 산화적 손상에 대한 보호 효과)

  • This study was to evaluate the antioxidant properties of the leaf extracts of Diospyros lotus (DLE) on the chemical-induced free radical and rat red blood cell (RBC) oxidative damage in vitro. DLE were prepared by extracting with water. DLE showed the high antioxidant activities on the scavenging of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)-induced radicals. An antioxidant activities of DLE was similar to the reference antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and (${\pm}$)6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchromane-2-carboxylic acid (Trolox). Reducing power of $1,000{\mu}g/mL$ DLE also was similar to the vitamin C. In RBC, oxidative hemolysis induced by the aqueous peroxyl radical generator (2,2'-Azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH)) were significantly suppressed by DLE in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, DLE prevented the depletion of cytosolic antioxidant glutathione in RBC damaged with AAPH. These results suggest that DLE may has value as natural product with its high quality antioxidant properties against oxidative stress.

  • Functional cerebral impairments have been verified objectively by brain SPECT and q-EEG (quantitative electroencephalography). Microcerebral circulatory defects without anatomical changes can-not be detected by the brain CT or MRI. Brain SPECT using $^{99m}Tc$-HMPAO (Hexamethyl propyleneamine oxime) as a key radioisotope may be accepted as the useful method for identifying functional cerebral impairments. We studied 25 patients with mild head trauma to define whether the SPECT was helpful in detecting cerebral impairment. Results were as follows: The SPECT was positive in 23 patients out of 25, q-EEG positive in 16 patients and brain CT was positive in 3 cases. SPECT and q-EEG were more sensitive than CT, SPECT would be more useful method than brain CT to investigate cerebral function after head injury.

Cigarette Smoking and Polymorphism of the Paraoxonase 1 Gene as Risk factors for Lung Cancer (폐암발생의 위험인자로서 흡연과 Paraoxonase 1 유전자 다형성)

  • Background : The paraoxonase enzyme plays a significant role in the detoxification of various organophosphorous compounds in mammals, and paraoxonase (PON) 1 is one of the endogenous free-radical scavenging systems in the human body. In this study, we investigated the interaction between cigarette smoking and the genetic polymorphism of PON1 with lung cancer in Korean males. Methods : Three hundred thirty five patients with lung cancer and an equal number of age-matched controls were enrolled in this study. Every subject was asked to complete a questionnaire concerning their smoking habits and alcohol drinking habits. A 5' exonuclease assay (TaqMan) was used to genotype the PON1 Q192R polymorphism. The effects of smoking habits and drinking habits, the PON1 Q192R polymorphism and their interactions were statistically analyzed. Results : Cigarette smoking and the Q/Q genotype of PON1 were significant risk factors for lung cancer. Individuals carrying the Q/Q genotype of PON1 were at a higher risk for lung cancer as compared with those individuals carrying the Q/R or R/R genotype (odds ratio, 2.84; 95% confidence interval, 1.69 - 4.79). When the groups were further stratified by the smoking status, the Q/Q PON1 was associated with lung cancer among the current or ex-smokers (odds ratio, 2.56; 95% confidence interval, 1.52 - 4.31). Current smokers or ex-smokers who had the Q/Q genotype showed an elevated risk for lung cancer (odds ratio: 15.50, 95% confidence interval: 6.76 - 35.54) as compared with the group of subjects who never smoked, and had the Q/R or R/R genotype. The odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of smokers with the PON1 Q/Q type compared to the nonsmokers with the PON1 Q/R or R/R type were 53.77 (6.55 - 441.14) for squamous cell carcinoma, 6.25 (1.38 - 28.32) for adenocarcinoma, and 59.94 (4.66 - 770.39) for small cell carcinoma, and these results were statistically significant. Conclusion : These results suggest that cigarette smoking and the PON1 Q/Q genotype are risk factors for lung cancer. The combination of cigarette smoking and the PON1 Q/Q genotype significantly increased the lung cancer risk irrespective of the histologic type of cancer.

  • This study examined the static characteristics of a spool valve with a hybrid lap between the spool land and the sleeve. The static equation for the pressure characteristics was derived from flow equations that depend on the spool displacement, and the final model was derived from $q_a=q_b=0$ because the pressure characteristics test needs to block the control port in the valve. The static equation for the flow characteristics was derived from the pressure characteristics when the control port is open ($q_a=q_b$, $p_a=p_b$). The characteristic equation in the shifted region was assumed from the proportional relationship between the pressure-flow characteristics and the spool displacement.

Effects of Baseline Selection on Magnetocardiography: P-Q and T-P Intervals (심자도의 P-Q 구간과 T-P 구간에서 설정한 베이스 라인의 효과에 대한 연구)

  • The baseline selection is the first and important step to analyze magnetocardiography (MCG) parameters. There are no difficulties to select the baseline between P- and Q-wave peak (P-Q interval) of MCG wave recorded from healthy subjects because the P-Q intervals of the healthy subjects do not much vary. However, patients with ischemic heart disease often show an unstable P-Q interval which does not seem to be appropriate for the baseline. In this case, T-P interval is alternatively recommended for the baseline. However, there has been no study on the difference made by the baseline selection. In this study, we studied the effect of the different baseline selection. MCG data were analyzed from twenty healthy subjects and twenty one patients whose baselines were alternatively selected in the T-P interval for their inappropriate P-Q interval. Paired T-test was used to compare two set of data. Fifteen parameters derived from the R-wave peak, the T-wave peak, and the period, $T_{max/3}{\sim}T_{max}$ were compared for the different baseline selection. As a result, most parameters did not show significant differences (p>0.05) except few parameters. Therefore, there will be no significant differences if anyone of two intervals were selected for the MCG baseline. However, for the consistent analysis, P-Q interval is strongly recommended for the baseline correction.
