  • Most of the unused facility in urban areas is perceived as an unreasonable space that damages cityscapes. However, unused space has the advantage of having historical value and potential for new development. In consideration of this, various plans have recently been made in terms of cultural use of unused space. The core is the performing arts culture space where various expressions can be expressed. Changes in the educational space that meet the various conditions required in future societies are also one of the topics to be discussed. In this study, we analyze the performance facilities utilizing the unused space and study the direction of educational facilities based on performance.

  • The local history research started from the 1960's postmodernism neted in the local history as the subject of diversity instead of National history. The local is being magnified as a new research theme among history scholar. In these circumstances, the local history research shows sign of activity and the movement that used in various ways at education has become more active. Compared to the contents business of local history, development of education contents what serviced for student is insufficient. Therefore, this research suggests development plan of local history education contents using archives which efficient tool of history education. Students can grow the ability of historical inquiry, thinking, insight through archives-assisted learning. Also, self-learning is possible instead of a lecture by teacher. This research shows a development of archival contents for local history education though literature research, abroad case analysis, focus group interview with history teachers. Concepts of the local history, local history education, education contents are examined at literature research. Local history education of the State Archives of the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Australia web site is analyzed. These state archives have been providing the web based service of archival contents for local history education for a long time. With these theoretical background, carry out a focus group interview with middle school history teachers. It draw conclusion that 14 category and 35 subcategory and these are reflected in the development of archival contents for local history education.

  • In this study, the contexts and values of the movement called 'Science and Citizenship' during the 1930-50s are discussed in relation to the historical development of school science education in Britain and to the current STS movement in school science. A special attention is given to the activities and ideas of a then eminent biologist, Lancelot Hogben(1895-1975) who published a textbook-like science book, called "Science for the Citizen"(1938). From the beginning of the 20th century, there was a growing realization that British education system needed to be changed in order to provide school science teaching to a wider audience with more emphasis on the relevance, industrial and humanistic aspects of science. This was echoed by a lecture series called 'Science and Citizenship' which was reported in the School Science Review, then the only nationwide professional journal for science educators and by a group of professional scientists who had socialist ideas toward society. Hogben was one of the key member of the group and delivered the second lecture of 'Science and Citizenship', titled "Biological Instruction and education for Citizenship". Hogben's main idea, illustrated in this lecture as well as in "Science for the Citizen", was that science education should be a way of teaching citizen for promoting democratic society and to achieve that science need to be taught in more integrated, utilitarian and humanistic manners, for example by showing the usefulness, relevance, historical and democratic aspects of science. In addition, a summary of his own life and activities, the social background and socialist scientists of the time, and comparisons between 'Science and Citizenship' movement and the General Science movement in the UK as well as the progressive science education in the USA, and the STS education movement in 1980s are discussed.

  • This study developed and proposed a lesson plan for the area of “Human development and family relationship”in secondary home economics curriculum. In current educational practice in secondary home economics curriculum, the employed goal and the nature of home economics are neither stated specifically nor closely interrelated. This problem has led us not being able to achieve pursuing goal of home economics education and to employ appropriate teaching methods. In view of this situation, the purpose of this study was to propose a lesson plan reflecting the contents and teaching methods to overcome difficulties and inefficiency in the current practice of secondary home economics education. The theoretical background of the lesson plan was based on the Marjorie M. Brown’s philosophy of home economics which can be summerized as follows: 1. The goal of home economics is to help individuals and families to become autonomous in their own family life and to be more capable of interacting with others in behalf of well-being of the family and of social evolution toward a free society. 2. The characteristics of home economics is conceptualized as practical science and personal service profession. 3. the nature of problems which home economics should deal with is perennial and practial. 4. Practial reasoning composed of historical understanding, critical action, and reflective thinking is appropriate for the previously mentioned goal and characteristics of home economics and for dealing with perennial practial problems. The lesson plan was proposed for one of perennial problem, “How should we understand, create, and maintain our family culture\ulcorner”by employing practial reasoning and teaching models such as “role play”and “classroom meeting.”

  • Humanities-collaborated practices in various fields have been supported by several governmental policies as a way to overcome recent social problems. Museum, due to its roles in preserving and sharing cultural and historical heritage for the development of society and communities, has emerged as a key base for the humanities-collaborated practices. This study, in this context, aimed to analyze how the humanities-based museum education programs have been practiced in the museums, which, in turn, might provide a basic data for the future direction and development of the programs and the related governmental policy as well. For this purpose, this study first examined theoretical framework for the link between humanities and museum education, from which a survey was developed. The survey was conducted to 75 museum educators who have been in charge of humanities-based educational programs. The result showed that most programs seemed to reflect the basic direction and purpose of the humanities-linked with museum education. Yet, more needs were found in terms of the educational themes and methods which can facilitate multicultural literacy and reflective thinking and activities within experiential learning environments.

  • The idea that the mobile phone could be used in the education field recently comes from it's strengths. They have mobility, on-the-spot-study, portablity, immediacy and they are easy to connect to educational information. The application which I developed in this study is using Google-Map API and is based on GPS. It can share the information about the area where user is located like text data and pictures of geography, culture, and historical remains. This application makes the best use of the mobile phone's strengths. It's more effective and we can expect that users could manage resources of learning and do self-directed study in spite of being outside of the classroom or after regular classtime.

  • Recently, dissection puzzles such as pentominoes have been used in mathematics education. But they are not actively applicable as a tool of problem solving or introducing mathematical concepts since researches about the historical background and developments of mathematical applications of such puzzles have not been effectively accomplished. In this article, in order to use pentominoes in mathematical teaming effectively, we first investigate geometric problems related to dissection puzzles and the historic background of development of pentominoes. And then we collect and classify data related to pentomino activities which can be applicable to mathematics classes based on the 7th elementary school national curriculum. Finally, we suggest several basic materials and directions to develop more systematic learning materials about pentominoes.

  • First: The common points from "syllabus" period to that of "Course of study" are as follows: 1) with no introduction explained. the "Syllabus" or "Course of study" was made to be completed in accordance with the allotment of time (unit). 2) To teach how to rear animals and grow plants, and to make specimens with collected samples formed a great significant field of learning, which meant giving more emphasis on learning classification, life-centered education and basic field of learning than discipline-centered education. 3) The reason why the field of applied biology was emphasized on was that both periods had ideals in Common to educate persons more necessary and useful to the society than to major the pure academic field. 4) Both periods mainly dealt with problems of diseases, and physical health discussed all over the world in 1950's which accounts for necessity of the society to free from ignorance. Second; "The first curriculum period" and "the second one" are observed as follows: 1) The former took the unit (credit) system for the first time. It tried to lay down the conceptual hierarchy with "Biology I" and "II" divided, while "Biolgy I" is better systematized than "Biology II". 2) Discipline-centered education and structure fo knowledge are put more emphasis on especially in "the 2nd curriculum period". 3) And also in this period are included serious problems such as urgency of pollution, importance of nature conservation, population due to the development of industry. 'Third; With the recent curriculum laid down, experiments and teaching contents of subjects are put in harmony with each other and accordingly the process of Inquiry is laid emphasis on. Fourth; It is necessary to set up conceptual sequence and scope effectively in the curriculum.
