  • The main purpose of this paper is to present an analytical method for free vibration of stepped horizontally curved members on two-parameter elastic foundation. The ordinary differential equations governing the free vibration of such beams are derived as non-dimensional forms including the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing equations are solved numerically for the circular, parabolic, sinusoidal and elliptic curved beams with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints. As the numerical results, the lowest four natural frequency parameters are presented as the functions of various non-dimensional system parameters. Also the typical mode shapes are presented.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation on the natural frequencies of arches with variable curvature. The differential equations are derived for the in-plane free vibration of linearly elastic arches of uniform stiffness and constant mass per unit length. The governing equations are solved numerically for parabolic, circular and elliptic geometries with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints. For each cases, the four lowest frequency parameters are presented as functions of the two dimensionless system parameters; the arch rise to span length ratio, and the slenderness ratio.

  • The differential equations governing both the free vibrations and buckling loads of tapered beam-columns of circular cross-section with constant volume are derived and solved numerically. The effects of axial load are included in the differential equations. The parabolic equation is chosen as the variable radius of circular cross-section for the tapered beam-column. In numerical examples, the clamped-clamped, clamped-hinged and hinged-hinged end constraints are considered. The variations of the frequency parameters and buckling load parameters with the non-dimensional system parameters are presented in figures and the configurations of strongest columns are obtained.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of arches with rectangular hollow section having constant area. The differential equations governing free vibrations of arches are derived in polar coordinates, in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. Natural frequencies is computed numerically for parabolic arches with clamped-clamped, clamped-hinged and hinged-hinged ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and reference are made to validate theories and numerical methods developed herein. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with the rotatory inertia, as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters: the breadth ratio, the thickness ratio and the shape ratio

  • in the present paper, the hydrodynamics properties of a Rahmen type flexible porous breakwater interacting with obliquely or normally incident small amplitude waves are numerically investigated. This system is composed of dual vertical porous membranes hinged at th side edges of a submerged horizontal membrane. The dual vertical membranes are extended downward and hinged at seabed. The effects of permeability, Rahmen type membrane breakwater geometry pre-tensions on membranes, relative dimensionless wave number, and incident Wave headings are thoroughly examined.

  • The aim of this study is to extract the design vocabulary of flexibility from analyzing Steven Holl' architectural works. For this purpose, the four works were selected and the design elements like their concepts, elevations, plans, furnitures, lights, materials, and colors were analyzed. The results of this study are as follows ; First, flexible design method is shown in adaptable space planning by using system of hinged panel and multi-functional furniture of various form. Second, Windows were made a plan of the geometric partition of surface and with clear materials for expanding space to outside. Third, the changing of level and the using of the phenomenological elements like a light color, water, and materials were applied for enhancing the image of the flexible space.

  • In this paper, an approximate method is developed to obtain the natural frequencies of the out of plane vibration of circular curved beams. The governing differential equations are derived using the dynamic equilibrium equations with the Timoshenko theory, and solved numerically. The Runge-Kutta method and Regula-Falsi method are used to integrate the differential equations and to determine the natural frequencies, respectively. In numerical examples, the hinged-hinged and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. For each case, the four lowest natural frequencies are reported as functions of four non-dimensional system parameters.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to Investigate the free vibrations of circular curved members resting on nonhomogeneous elastic foundations. The governing differential equations derived in a previous paper are used. The governing equations are solved numerically to obtain frequencies. Hinged-hinged end constraint is considered in numerical examples. The lowest three natural frequencies are calculated over a wide range of non-dimensional system parameters: the foundation rested ratio, the foundation parameter, the horizontal rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio, and the width ratio of the contact area between the member and the foundation.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of horizontally curved beams on an elastic foundation. Taking into account the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation, the differential equations governing free vibrations of noncircular curved beams resting on Pasternak-type foundations are derived and solved numerically. The lowest three natural frequencies for parabolic curved beams with hinged-hinged and clamped-clamped end restraints are calculated. Numerical results are presented to show the effects on the natural frequencies of the non-dimensional system parameters: the horizontal rise to span length ratio, the Winkler foundation parameter, the shear foundation parameter, and the width ratio of contact area between the beam and foundation.

  • The differential equations governing in-plane free vibrations of the elastic, catenary arch with rotatory inertia are derived in Cartesian coordinates. Frequencies and mode shapes are computed numerically for such arches with unsymmetric axes, for both clamped-clamped and hinged-hinged end constraints. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with and without rotatory inertia, as a function of three nondimensional system parameters; the span to cord length ratio e, the slenderness ratio s, and the rise to cord length ratio f. Experimental measures of frequencies and mode shapes for several laboratory-scale catenary models serve to validate the theoretical results.
