The study presents the earthquake performance of the Bosphorus Bridge under multi-point earthquake excitation considering the spatially varying site-specific earthquake motions. The elaborate FE model of the bridge is firstly established depending on the new considerations of the used FEM software specifications, such as cable-sag effect, rigid link and gap elements. The modal analysis showed that singular modes of the deck and the tower were relatively effective in the dynamic behavior of the bridge due to higher total mass participation mass ratio of 80%. The parameters and requirements to be considered in simulation process are determined to generate the spatially varying site-specific ground motions. Total number of twelve simulated ground motions are defined for the multi-support earthquake analysis (Mp-sup). In order to easily implement multi-point earthquake excitation to the bridge, the practice-oriented procedure is summarized. The results demonstrated that the Mp-sup led to high increase in sectional forces of the critical components of the bridge, especially tower base section and tensile force of the main and back stay cables. A close relationship between the dynamic response and the behavior of the bridge under the Mp-sup was also obtained. Consequently, the outcomes from this study underscored the importance of the utilization of the multi-point earthquake analysis and the necessity of considering specifically generated earthquake motions for suspension bridges.
This paper estimates relationships between the supply of national highways, measured in lane-km, and the quantity of traffic, measured in vehicle-km traveled. The analysis uses a panel data set of annual observations for the years 1984 to 2003. By using a log-linear lag effect model designed to capture short and long term effects, the paper estimates that national highway vehicle-km traveled has a lane-km elasticity of 0.268 at the country level (Non-Seoul Metropolitan area) and 0.41 at the Seoul metropolitan area for the short term. For the long term, the paper estimates 0.8 for the country level and 1.23 for the Seoul metropolitan area. This paper finds conclusive evidence that increases in highway lane-miles have generated traffic over the period of study, however the increasing ratio of the generated traffic decreases gradually, particularly during the late 1980s.
The Purpose of this Paper was to study the relationship between the change of operating speeds and the accidents on horizontal curves. For this purpose, we divided a horizontal curve section into two parts, a tangent section and a curve section, to estimate the operating speed for each vehicle. For studying relationship between the change of speed and geometric effect, the free-flow speed was used. The location and speed for the lowest speed were studied. Also, we analyzed the relationship between the change of operating speeds and the accidents. The followings are resulted in this study. First, drivers tend to reduce speeds significantly before they reach a curve. And the lowest speed was recorded at the downstream of the Point of curve (PC) due to the limited sight-distance of drivers on curve. Second, the larger the change of operating speeds become, the greater frequency of accident was recorded. These results can be used for developing the safety index on highways to check the design consistency.

Many countries in the world have already begun digitizing spatial objects and features located in either above -or under- ground in order to conduct various spatial analyses including disaster prevention planning. At the same time, the amount of information to be exchanged will be astronomical once the information super highways will be completed to connect many countries in the world Ways to exchange and transfer of spatial information. efficiently will have to be developed in order to avoid duplicated efforts and money and to maximize the use of spatial information 1hat has already been collected. One way to maximize the efficiency in sharing spatial information is to develop a transfer standard. thus, the purpose of this paper is to review spatial data transfer standard(SDTS) with the hope that it would shed light on the development of a transfer standard for Korea
The study analyzes likely impacts of left truck lane restriction strategies on urban freeways based on a traffic simulation model. This study contains two main parts. The first part is performed to develop feasible alternatives as well as provide insights into conditions under left truck lane restrictions would be effective based on the analysis of two representative hypothetical highways. Different levels of O-D demands and truck percentage is at least restrictions would work when maximum rate of flow is more than 1,300vphpl or truck percentage is at least over loft of the total traffic. The second part of our study concerns a case study on a region with perhaps the highest truck volumes in the U.S. - a northbound section of Interstate 710 corridor in Los Angeles County, Southern California. The results show that restricting the two leftmost lanes under congested traffic with heavy ruck use, provides the most positive impacts in terms of improving the flow of traffic and saving fuel. In addition, our study demonstrates that in general, the number of lanes restricted is a crucial factor in the success of this strategy.

According to the present highway design criteria, there are minimum standards which re ade from special design speeds. If some highways are satisfied the standards, it regards he highway as safety. In reality, however, most drivers drive a car at different speed compared with design speed. It is very dangerous for drivers especially at transition sections between curve and horizontal curve sections. Hence, this study calculated the rate of changing and horizontal acceleration at each section. Moreover, this study evaluated thesafety of design at curve transition sections and then calculated lateral acceleration and curve radii. This study found the minimum standards which are using as basic safety standards are not appropriate for measuring driver's safety.
Coastal sand dunes in West coast of Korea are under stress. Due to the newly constructed Seohaean(West Coast) Highways, the number of visitors and the anthropogenic pressures will keep rising in near future. Sea level rise due to the global warming may cause a lot of damage to the natural resources and residents of coastal area. Therefore, many countries including United States are doing nationwide coastline survey using highly sophisticated methodology. In this study, high resolution IKONOS satellite images along with aerial photographs taken since 1960's have been sequentially analyzed using GIS software (Erdas Imagine 8.3). Onsite monitoring has been performed at the 31 measuring points in 10 beaches since the May of 2001 in order to measure the sand budget. Post-construction monitoring after installation of sand fences is also being done on sites regularly. Restoration works seem to be effective at this moment.
This paper proposes an Fuzzy-based Risk Reasoning Driving Strategy on VANET. Its first reasoning phase consists of a WC_risk reasoning that reasons the risk by using limited road factors such as current weather, density, accident, and construction, a DR_risk reasoning that reasons the risk by combining the driving resistance with the weight value suitable for the environment of highways and national roads, a DS_risk reasoning that judges the collision risk by using the travel direction, speed. and distance of vehicles and pedestrians, and a Total_risk reasoning that computes a final risk by using the three above-mentioned reasoning. Its second speed reduction proposal phase decides the reduction ratio according to the result of Total_risk and the reduction ratio by comparing the regulation speed of road to current vehicle's speed. Its third risk notification phase works in case current driving speed exceeds regulation speed or in case the Total_risk is higher than AV(Average Value). The Risk Notification Phase informs rear vehicles or pedestrians around of a risk according to drivers's response. If drivers use a brake according to the proposed speed reduction, the precedent vehicles transfers Risk Notification Messages to rear vehicles. If they don't use a brake, a current driving vehicle transfers a Risk Message to pedestrians. Therefore, this paper not only prevents collision accident beforehand by reasoning the risk happening to pedestrians and vehicles but also decreases the loss of various resources by reducing traffic jam.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the accuracy of traffic volume forecast by comparing an estimated to real traffic volume. For this study, total 10 sections of national highways, which are planned in 1980s and 1990s, were selected and traffic analysis data for highway construction were collected. In addition, targeted 10 sections were categorized into network-related and -unrelated sections. In the analysis of inaccuracy between the estimated and real traffic, for network-related sections, appeared to have lower inaccuracy. As time goes on after traffic open, inaccuracy between the estimated and real traffic appeared to be lower. In various section lengths, the longer the section length, the higher the inaccuracy is. Using 3 years passed data after traffic open, national highway have lower inaccuracy than expressway. However, the traffic analysis according to traffic open time resulted in little change of the inaccuracy.
One of the most important steps of the design, capacity and operation analysis stapes in the two-lane two way highways is the effect of heavy vehicle to traffic flow quality. This heavy vehicle's effect on traffic flow can be represented as PCE, which is the number of passenger cars that are displaced by a single heavy vehicle of a particular type under prevailing roadway, traffic, and control conditions. In this paper, we focus on the heavy vehicles effect on volume, speed, delay, and the maneuver of freedom which are major MOE's in traffic operation analysis and PCE criterion which should be measurable, determinable and able to reflect the traffic flow characteristics. Therefore, the objective of the paper is to determine the PCE criterion and to develop a new PCE determination method. In this study, delay is adopted as PCE criterion and, for calculation of delay, the highway is divided into the passing zone and the no-passing zone. PCE is determined by comparing the delay due to total traffic flow interaction with the delay due to a single heavy vehicle, Also, this paper proposes a new method to determine the average PCE on the highway that has the passing zones and no-passing zones.
