  • As the slope designs had simply followed some slope guidelines during 1960's∼1970's, of which the main purpose was to estimate earth work quantities in the feasibility stage, slope failures had been experienced in Korea Highways. Various site investigation methods for highway cut-slopes have been continuously developed, and major cut-slope failures caused by slope instability have rapidly reduced. The failure mode of recent cut-slope failures in highways during typhoon RUSA No.15. featured a debris flow in soil mass activated by flowing water. The study of the surface soil scour and the debris flow caused by heavy rainfall must be done to protect the cut-slope failures in the future

  • This study is focused on evaluation of the structural behavior of skewed bridge during earthquake. The variation of natural frequencies and the lateral forces at pier shoes by the skewness and the rotational effect about vertical axis of skewed bridge due to seismic activity are analytically evaluated and identified through case studies. For this purpose, the composite steel girder highway bridges are selected as case study models. The seismic analyses by response spectrum method and time history method are performed for the selected models. It has been recognized that the frequency of longitudinal model increased as the skew angle decreased, while the lateral mode frequency showed the opposite trends. When the skew angle decreased, longitudina seismic forces of the bridge at the pier were increased but decreased in transverse direction. And it also has been found that the skewed bridges of the case study models showed the rotational behavior about vertical axis due to motion of San Fernando earthquake at Pacoima Dam.

  • As metropolitan areas are rapidly growing in both population and physical size, so too has the problem of traffic congestion. Magnifying this is the limited financial resources and lack of road corridor space available to juggle the many competing demands. High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) facilities have been implemented in an attempt to alleviate the problem of growing congestion while considering the issue of limited funding and lack of physical space. HOV lanes may increase the efficiency of a road corridor by maximising its person carrying capacity. These facilities are meant to provide priority treatment to HOVs, thereby luring people to choose a transport mode with a higher occupancy than the single occupant vehicle (SOV), such as buses or carpools. This paper analyze the issues surrounding HOV lanes, their effect, problems and their evaluation by using Intergration, that is Traffic Simulation Software, when HOV lanes be implemented in the Olympic Highway.

  • In this study, analytical and experimental modal analyses of a scaled bridge model are carried out to extract the dynamic characteristics such as natural frequency, mode shapes and damping ratios. For this purpose, a scaled bridge model is constructed in laboratory conditions. Three dimensional finite element model of the bridge is constituted and dynamic characteristics are determined, analytically. To identify the dynamic characteristics experimentally; Experimental Modal Analyses (ambient and forced vibration tests) are conducted to the bridge model. In the ambient vibration tests, natural excitations are provided and the response of the bridge model is measured. Sensitivity accelerometers are placed to collect signals from the measurements. The signals collected from the tests are processed by Operational Modal Analysis; and the dynamic characteristics of the bridge model are estimated using Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification methods. In the forced vibration tests, excitation of the bridge model is induced by an impact hammer and the frequency response functions are obtained. From the finite element analyses, a total of 8 natural frequencies are attained between 28.33 and 313.5 Hz. Considering the first eight mode shapes, these modes can be classified into longitudinal, transverse and vertical modes. It is seen that the dynamic characteristics obtained from the ambient and forced vibration tests are close to each other. It can be stated that the both of Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification methods are very useful to identify the dynamic characteristics of the bridge model. The first eight natural frequencies are obtained from experimental measurements between 25.00-299.5 Hz. In addition, the dynamic characteristics obtained from the finite element analyses have a good correlation with experimental frequencies and mode shapes. The MAC values obtained between 90-100% and 80-100% using experimental results and experimental-analytical results, respectively.

  • The rapid growths of economy and automobiles since the 1970's have caused serious traffic jams and environmental disruption in urban areas. To relieve these problems caused by urbanization, there should be considered alternative means of transportation modes. Many developed countries have accepted bicycles as a so called "Green Mode" for environmentally oriented strategies to increase the qualities of urban lives. Korea have also attempted various means to raise bicycle usages. In this research, significant factors affecting bicycle crashes at signalized intersections in urban areas were studied. The model results showed that Poisson regression is the best fit methodology for data modeling and revealed that traffic volume, a number of driveways, configuration of the ground, presence of bicycle path, school, and bus stop, residential area, size of intersection are significant factors affecting the bicycle crashes.

  • In this paper, a diffractive optical element was designed to create lighting patterns that satisfy the requirements of adaptive headlight systems for normal road mode, highway mode, and wet road mode, and this was rendered into a GDSII stream format file.To verify the effectiveness of the light distribution formed by the diffractive optical elements and the realization of white light, simulations based on Field Tracing and Ray Tracing were conducted, confirming the satisfaction of position and luminance requirements at the transformation beam measurement points. Based on this research, it is anticipated that the implementation of adaptive headlights would be possible, enabling the reproduction of luminance contrast and the creation of a simple-structured adaptive headlight system.

  • This study suggested a method of forecasting market-share of each mode after introducing new urban rail transit lines. The study reflected the observed market share of presently operating urban rail transit into forecasting process in order to improve accuracy in predicting market share of each modes. For more realistic representation of the forecasting model, we categorized O/D pairs according to attributes of trip distance, access time and number of transfers. The analysis results of traveler's mode choice behavior with observed data showed that the trip distances are longer, the share of urban rail tends to be higher, and that the number of transfers is fewer and the access times are lesser, the share of urban rail also tends to be higher. Then, incremental logit model was used in estimating mode choice probabilities for O/D pairs along with rail transit lines while utilizing observed market shares of each modes and differences in transit service level. As the next step, the market share of rail transit after introducing new rail transit lines was forecasted by using incremental logit model with the intial share values calculated the previous analysis step. It also reflected changes in level of service for automobile in highway due to changes in highway systems and changes in mode shares after introducing new lines of rail transit. It can be expected that the proposed method would more realistically duplicates phenomena of mode choice behavior for rail transit and that it would be more theoretically logical than the typical existing methods using SP data and incremental logit model or using addictive logit model in this country.

  • Digital communication is important for reliability and mobilization of the multi-channel communication systems. Transmitting and receiving data for the mobilization should be possible in anywhere and in anytime. And this system must be designed light weight small size and low power. One are essential technology for implementing the mobile wireless communication system on the age of ubiquotos. Requirements in constructing such communication field are followings. At first data transmitting and receiving should be carried out by a simple command. Second, the device should be designed as hand-hold type and low power consumption. Third, data communication should be reliable. As one of examples, car to car system which is popular in the market is introduced here, All traffic information in highway is transmitted from one car to another by using this system which can prevent possible traffic accident. This paper shows the design of a digital data communication system with CC1020 chip. This CC1020 makes easy frequency selection and easy switch from the transmit mode to the receive mode by simple setting of a memory register in the chip. The transmit power of this system is designed 10dBm and its communication range is about 100m. The power supplied this system is 3V considered as low power. The sleep mode can be easily entered during transmit mode or receive mode. We shows the program algorithm of CC1020 and interface circuit between MCU and CC1020. • A vehicle fuel economy is very important issue in view of fuel cost and environmental regulation. The technology development for the fuel economy improvement improved the engine, power train and many components of vehicle. So, the fuel economy is much improved, but up to now the measurement of it tests the given mode(LA-4, FTP-75, etc) within computer simulation program and engine dynamo. In this paper, to deduct the method of its improvement of real road, the test vehicle ran 213Km Youngdong real highway using 3 different algorithms in computer simulation. For this, I extracted the distance and altitude data from received GPS data and calculated the grade angle, road load and accomplished the velocity profiles according to algorithms in all 213Km distance. The vehicle runs in computer with AVL Cruise simulation program using velocity profile. I calculate the fuel economy using AVL Cruise simulation result and propose the Eco-driving method of them.
