  • Background: This study aimed to demonstrate the association between the education level of parents and adolescent depression feeling. Methods: We used the chi-square test and the multiple logistic regression model to analyze the data of the "Korean Youth Health Behavior Survey in 2018" (n=43,220) conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Results: As a result of the analysis, a group whose parents' education level is 'above the university graduation (including the graduation of the college)' had statistically significant experience of depression than a group whose parents' education level is 'high school graduation.' Conclusion: When preparing a policy on adolescent depression feeling, we need to consider the association between the education level of parents and adolescent depression feeling. Especially, a higher level of education of parents needs attention and management to foster positive mental health rather than excessive academic pressure, especially in the parent-child relationship of the same gender.

By doing so, the study aimed to find the effects of the characteristics of STEM disciplines and organizational culture of STEM-specialized small-sized institutions on student engagement. The students majoring STEM disciplines, regardless of the organizational types, showed lower reflective-integrative learning experiences compared to students on humanities & social science disciplines. In contrast, students of STEM-specialized institutions reported significantly higher levels of peer relationship and student-faculty interaction in comparison with humanities & social science students and STEM students of general higher education institutions. Finally, the study suggests policy implications for STEM education.

  • Education policy is a dynamic process featuring social development trends. The world countries have focused their education program on empowering the learners for future life and work. This paper aims to assess the higher education curriculum based on a survey of 280 students, employers, alumni, and lecturers in both social sciences and natural sciences in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The fuzzy decision-making method, namely the Fuzzy Extent Analysis Method (F-EAM), was applied to measure the relative weight of each parameter. Seven factors under the curriculum development have been put in the ranking. Input with emphasis on foreign language was the highest priority in curriculum development, given the expected demand of the labor market. Objective and learning outcome and teaching activities ranked second and third, respectively. The traditional triangle of teaching content, methodology, and evaluation and assessment are still proven their roles, but certain modifications have been defined in the advanced curriculum. Teaching facilities had the least weight among the seven dimensions of curriculum development. The findings are helpful for education managers to efficiently allocate scarce resources to reform the curriculum to bridge the undergraduate quality gap between labor supply and demand, meeting the dynamic trends of social development.

  • In the 21st century, as the emergence of the age of creative economy is expected, interest in the cultivation of creative talents required in society around the world is newly rising. Sustainable development education should not be limited to school education, but should be promoted and supported at all social education sites for the purpose of lifelong education. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to consider the relationship between the possibility of formal and informal learning and the development of capacity in higher education. Exploratory and qualitative research based on intensive groups was designed using several groups of formal and informal learning settings. In China, the creation of a creative economy is set as a major national policy direction for the new government. What is required for talented people in the creative economy era and how to educate them is becoming a major policy issue. The development of core competencies requires multiple contexts based on cognitive non-cognitive disposition. By combining the formal and informal learning environment within higher education for the purpose of a new learning culture, it can provide a variety of situations and improve competency development. While this study can identify aspects of formal and informal learning settings, the interdependencies between them are still difficult to grasp. However, practical implications can be seen clearly. In other words, based on the results, you can point out key aspects of competency acquisition that can be a key element in the higher education environment. As a result, this study analyzed implications for formal and informal learning environments for new ways of developing core competencies in higher education.

  • Using a sample from Korea Education Employment Panel(KEEP), this study attempts to ascertain determinants of demand for alternative education in Korea. It found that children's gender and duration of computer use exert a strong effect on demand for alternative education. Also, those parents, who show more interest in government's education policy; are less content with the schools their children are attending; and exhibit the higher likelihood of migration for children's education, appear to have the stronger tendency to seek alternative education for their children. Meanwhile, there was a significant difference between male and female students in the factors that influence demand for alternative education. For male students, duration of computer use and the parents' interest in government's education policy tend to matter. For female students, however, health condition seems to be associated with demand for alternative education. For both male and female students, those parents' who are more discontent with the schools their children are attending and/or have the higher likelihood of migration for children's education seem more likely to send their children to alternative schools.

  • This study analyses the effects of the major educational policies, focusing on the private tutoring prohibition policy(PTPP), on the intergenerational class mobility(ICM) by using Korea Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS) 1st-12th surveys. Because private tutoring(shadow education) can be effective for academic achievement of children of above middle classes that spend most private tutoring expenditure and have more information on education, the private tutoring prohibition policy can increase the intergenerational mobility. This study confirms this possibility. Even when the overlapping effect of the middle school equalization polity is controlled for, there is still high effect of the PTPP. We think that we still need to examine the level of intergenerational mobility with PTPP cohort with that of later cohorts in the future. We also emphasize the compositive effect of the several consistent policies such as middle school and high school equalization polices and the PTPP and length and continuity of the policies for the higher mobility.
