In a small centrifugal compressor system, a high-speed motor needs to be developed to drive impellers directly. Heat is generated by both electrical heating due to copper coil resistance and aerodynamic heating in the gap between the rotor and stator in a high-speed motor. Removal of the heat is essential to the design of such motors since most magnetic materials are brittle and can be easily fractured by the heat. In the present study the cooling flow fields and temperature distributions were analyzed by using computational fluid dynamics simulation for a high-speed motor which has air cooling system as well as water cooling system. In the analysis a conjugate heat transfer problem is solved by considering both convective heat transfer in the cooling system and conduction heat transfer in solid parts. Based on design drawings of a motor, air cooling system and water cooling system were analyzed to obtain temperature field and thus to check the coiling system performance. Also the cooling performance are studied for various flow rates of cooling air and water at the inlets.
In manufacturing optical fibers, the process starts with the glass fiber drawing from the heated and softened silica preform in the furnace, and the freshly drawn glass fiber is still at high temperature when it leaves the glass fiber drawing furnace. It is necessary to cool down the glass fiber to the ambient temperature before it then enters the fiber coating applicator, since the hot glass fiber is known to cause several technical difficulties in achieving high quality fiber coating. As the fiber drawing speed keeps increasing, a current manufacturing of optical fibers requires a dedicated cooling unit with helium gas injection. A series of three-dimensional flow and heat transfer computations are carried out to investigate the effectiveness of fiber cooling in the fiber cooling unit. The glass fiber cooling unit is simplified into the long cylindrical enclosure at which the hot glass fiber passes through at high speed, and the helium is being supplied through several injection slots of rectangular shape along the cooling unit. This study presents and discusses the effects of helium injection rates on the glass fiber cooling rates.
A chiller cooler absorbs the thermal energy of water to generate cold water and supplies the generated cold water to a cold water pipe buried in the wall of a small mobile modular house to greatly increase the cooling area. An attempt was made to reduce the required cooling time significantly. A small chiller cooler suitable for the cooling load of a small mobile modular house with an area less than 3.3 m2 was employed. When cooling is done during summer using a chiller cooler installed outdoors, heat absorption energy loss occurs in the cold water pipe owing to the high temperature. To address this, a study was conducted to reduce the endothermic energy loss significantly. As the mass flow rate of the cold water flowing inside the cold water pipe increased, the temperature decrease gradient of the cold water increased. From the start of the cooling operation, the air temperature of the small mobile modular house decreased linearly in proportion to the operation time. Furthermore, the temperature of the air inside the small mobile modular house decreased in proportion to the increase in the flow of water inside the cold water pipe.
Turbine inlet temperature is steadily increasing to achieve high specific thrust and efficiency of gas turbine engines. Turbine cooling technology is essential to increase turbine inlet temperature. For this study, a small or medium sized aircraft engine of 10,000 lbf class with the turbine inlet temperature of $1,400^{\circ}C$, the engine overall pressure ratio of 32.2, and the bypass ratio of 5 was set as the baseline model and its performance analysis was performed at the design point. The engine has the performance of 10,013 lbf thrust and the specific fuel consumption of 0.362 lbm/hr/lbf. The thrust and the specific fuel consumption of the baseline model were compared with those of similar class engines. Based on these results, the turbine design requirements were assigned. In addition, the parametric analysis of the engine, related to aerodynamic and cooling design of the high pressure turbine, was performed. Based on the baseline model engine, the influence of turbine inlet temperature, cooling flow ratio, and high pressure turbine efficiency variations on the engine performance was analyzed.

This paper presents the optimization process of evaporator for a vapor compression cooling system for high heat flux CPU. The CPU thermal capacity was given by 300W. Evaporating temperature and mass flow rate were $18^{\circ}C$ and 0.00182kg/s respectively. R134a was used as a working fluid. Channel width(CW) and height(CH) were selected as design factors. And thermal resistance, surface temperature of CPU, degree of superheat, and pressure drop were taken as objective responses. Fractional factorial DOE was used in screening phase and RSM(Response Surface Method) was used in optimization phase. As a result, CW of 2.5mm, CH of 2.5mm, and CL of 484mm were taken as an optimum geometry. Surface temperature of CPU and thermal resistance were $33^{\circ}C\;and\;0.0502^{\circ}C/W$ respectively. Thermal resistance of evaporator designed in this study was significantly lower than that of other cooling systems such as water cooling system and thermosyphon system. It was found that the evaporator considered in this work can be a excellent candidate for a high heat flux CPU cooling system.
Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) is a next generation technology for fabrication of micrometer and nanometer scale patterns. There have been considerable attentions on NIL due to its potential abilities that enable cost-effective and high-throughput nanofabrication to the display device and semiconductor industry. Up to now there have been a lot of researches on thermal NIL, but most of them have been focused on polymer deformation in the molding process and there are very few studies on the cooling and demolding process. In this paper a cooling process of the polymer resist in thermal NIL is analyzed with finite element method. The modeling of cooling process for mold, polymer resist and substrate is developed. And the cooling process is numerically investigated with the effects of imprinting temperature and residual layer thickness of polymer resist on stress distribution of the polymer resist. The results show that the lower imprinting temperature, the higher the maximum von Mises stress and that the thicker the residual layer, the greater maximum von Mises stress.
The introduction of the sector coupling concept has expanded the scope of ESS utilization, resulting in the importance of thermal management of ESS. To ensure the safe use of the lithium-ion batteries that are used in ESS, it is important to use the batteries at the optimal temperature. To examine the utilization of liquid cooling in ESS, numerical study was conducted on the thermal characteristics of 21700 battery modules (16S2P array) during liquid cooling using Novec-649 as insulating fluid. The NTGK model, an MSMD model in ANSYS fluent, was used to investigate thermal characteristics on the battery modules with liquid immersion cooling. The results show that the final temperature of the battery module discharged at 5 C-rate is 68.9℃ using natural convection and 48.3℃ using liquid cooling. However, the temperature difference among cells in the battery module was up to 0.5℃ when using natural convection cooling and 5.8℃ when using liquid cooling, respectively, indicating that the temperature difference among cells was significantly increased when liquid cooling was used. As the mass flow rate increased from 0.01 kg/s to 0.05 kg/s, the average temperature of the battery module decreased from 48.3℃ to 38.4℃, confirming that increasing the mass flow rate of the insulating fluid improves the performance of liquid immersion cooling. Although partial liquid immersion cooling has a high cooling performance compared to natural convection cooling, the temperature difference between modules was up to 8.9℃, indicating that the thermal stress of the battery cells increased.
In the optical application demand for high quality lens is increasing. Plastics lenses are demanded more than glass lenses for large size lenses as well as micro-size lenses. It is difficult to apply typical straight cooling channels of injection mold to lens molding due to its non-uniform temperature distribution. In this study, we manufactured molds for plastic lenses with the conventional cooling channels and conformal cooling channels produced by the DMLS process. We evaluated cooling performance for the 2 molds by injection molding experiment. Also, uniformity of the temperature distribution was tested by infrared camera and temperature monitoring. We confirmed that the cooling performance and temperature uniformity with the conformal cooling channels is much improved from the ones with the conventional. The cooling time with the conformal cooling channels was reduced 30% compared with the conventional cooling channels.
Elastic-plastic structural analysis for regenerative cooling chamber of gas generator was performed. Uniaxial tension test was conducted for STS316L at room and high temperature conditions to get the material data necessary for the structural analysis of the chamber which was operated under thermal load and high internal pressure. Physical properties including thermal conductivity, specific heat and thermal expansion were also measured. The structural analysis for four different types of regenerative cooling chamber of gas generator revealed that increased cooling performance decreased the thermal load and strain of the cooling channel structure. The results propose that in order for the regenerative cooling gas generator chamber to have high structural stability with endurance to high mechanical and thermal loads, it is important for the chamber to be designed to have high cooling performance.
