TiAl 합금의 CaO 도가니 유도용융 및 정밀주조 (CaO Crucible Induction Melting and Investment Casting of TiAl Alloys)

  • The main objectives were to investigate the suitability of CaO crucible for melting TiAl alloys and to develop investment mold for investment casting of TiAl alloys. TiAl alloy specimen were prepared by plasma arc furnace under argon atmosphere. After melting of TiAl alloy using CaO crucible, the results showed that there is little contamination of oxygen in the TiAl bulk. Conventional vacuum induction furnaces can be readily adaptable to produce cast parts of TiAl without high skilled techniques. The determination of optical metallography and microhardness profiles in investment cast TiAl alloy rods has allowed the gradation of the relative thermal stability of the oxides examined. The molds used for the present study were $ZrO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, CaO stabilized $ZrO_2$ and $ZrSiO_4$. Even although high temperature of mold preheating, $Al_2O_3$ mold is a promising mold material for investment casting of TiAl alloys in terms of thermal stability, cost and handling strength. It is important to take thermal stability and preheating temperature of mold into consideration for investment casting of TiAl alloys.

  • A hypereutectic Aluminum-Silicon Alloy is widely used in the parts of automobile because of high-resistance and good strength. In this study, the cutting of hypereutectic A1-Si alloy for economical production was investigated by simulation. Tool life and the extraction rate of Si particles is inversely proportional to the depth of cut. When decreasing the depth of cut, the reduction of single crystal diamond tool cost and tool change time is achieved.

  • The binary Al-Mg alloys are the basis for the 5000 series of non-heat-treatable aluminum alloys. In general, 5000 series of aluminum alleys have a high strength, good welding characteristics and a high resistance to corrosion, especially under the seawater. Thus the aluminum alloys are adopted in the hull material of hovercraft that is required light in weight as well as high strength. It is very important that the weldability problem of these alloys caused by high thermal conductivities welding deformation, porosity and so on. in this study, auto-welding equipment was applied for aluminum welding automation. Also, optimal welding data were studied by investigating welding characteristics for various shapes of weldment to use Al 5083 that is representative structural materials of the 5000 series of aluminum alloys.

Ti-6Al-4V 고강도 볼트 성형 기술 개발 (Hot Forging Process of High Strength Ti-6Al-4V Bolt)

  • Since fastener bolt for airplane require high specific strength and corrosion resistance, Ti-6Al-4V alloy is widely used. However, the Ti-6Al-4V bolt is generally manufactured by cutting and rolling because of their poor workability. The aim of present work is to develop hot forming technology for high strength Ti-6Al-4V. Various heat-treatments were applied to specimen in order to increase hot-workability and prevent galling with die Multiple forging were simulated with FE code to determine optimum process parameters including specimen temperature, strain rate, local strain, and thermal shrinkage. Forged samples were heat-treated again to increase their mechanical properties.

  • New Al-based alloys with very high ultimate tensile strength were developed in high Al concentration range of 91-95 at.% for Al-Fe-Cr-Ti-M (M: Co and Mo) systems and Al-Fe-Cr-Mo-Ti-Co system by the dispersion of nanoscale quasicrystalline particles in Al phase. The effect of adding elements, M was discussed in the viewpoint of stability of super-cooled liquid state and formation ability of quasicrystalline phase. The P/M Al-Fe-Cr-Ti-M alloys with dispersed nanoscale quasicrystalline particles exhibited ultimate tensile strength of 350MPa at 573K and 200MPa at 673K.

  • Interest in aluminum alloys for the hydrogen valves of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) is growing due to the reduction in fuel efficiency by the high weight. However, when an aluminum alloy is used, deterioration in mechanical characteristics caused by hydrogen embrittlement and wear is regarded as a problem. In this investigation, the aluminum alloy used to prevent hydrogen embrittlement was subjected to surface treatments by performing hard anodizing and plasma ion nitriding processes. The hard anodized Al alloy exhibited brittleness in which the mechanical characteristics rapidly deteriorated due to porosity and defects of surface, resulting in a decrease in the ultimate tensile strength and modulus of toughness by 15.58 and 42.51%, respectively, as the hydrogen charging time increased from 0 to 96 hours. In contrast, no distinct nitriding layer in the plasma ion-nitrided Al alloy was observed due to oxide film formation and processing conditions. However, compared to 0 and 96 hours of hydrogen charging time, the ultimate tensile strength and modulus of toughness decreased by 7.54 and 13.32%, respectively, presenting excellent resistance to hydrogen embrittlement.

초고장력강과 알루미늄 합금의 판재 접합을 위한 헬리컬 SPR 설계 (Design of Helical SPR for Joining Advanced High Strength Steel and Aluminum Alloy Sheets)

  • Self-piercing riveting (SPR) is a sheet-joining method that can be used for materials that are difficult or unsuitable for weld, such as aluminum alloys and other steel sheet metals. The increased application of lightweight materials has initiated many investigations into new SPR conditions for riveting dissimilar materials. However, buckling of the semi-tubular rivet occurs during the riveting of AHSS. In this study, a helical SPR was designed for the riveting of AHSS and Al-alloy. In addition, the reinforced helical SPR which has straight parts was designed. The riveting of AHSS and Al-alloy was simulated. Simulated results were verified by comparison with experimental ones.

  • Titanium alloy sheets have excellent specific strength and corrosion resistance as well as good performance at high temperature. Recently, titanium alloys are widely employed not only for aerospace parts but also for bio prothesis and motorcycle. However, the database is insufficient in the titanium alloy for press forming process. In this study, the effect of temperature on the forming limit diagram was investigated for Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheet through the Hecker‘s punch stretching test at elevated temperature. Experimental results obtained in this study can provide a database for the development of press forming process at elevated temperature of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheet. From the experimental studies it can be concluded that the formability of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheet is governed by the ductile failure for the testing temperature. The formability of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy sheet at $700^{\circ}C$ increases about 7 times compared with that at room temperature.

온간 단조공정을 이용한 타이타늄합금 볼트 제조기술 (Manufacturing Technology of Titanium Alloy Bolts Using Warm Forging Process)

  • Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been widely used for aerospace and power generation applications because of low density and attractive mechanical and corrosion resistant properties. However, the titanium alloy bolt is generally manufactured by cutting and rolling because of their poor workability. In order to achieve the mass production of titanium alloy bolts, it needs to be solved some manufacturing problems such as the sticking between workpiece and dies, the formation of the forming defects during the forging and so on. In this study, the manufacturing technology of titanium alloy bolts using warm forging process was introduced. The aim of present work is to develop a warm forging technology for high strength Ti-6Al-4V bolts.
