Analogical reasoning is a mathematically useful way of thinking. By analogy reasoning, students can improve problem solving, inductive reasoning, heuristic methods and creativity. The purpose of this study is to analyze the analogical reasoning of preservice mathematics teachers while constructing quadratic curves defined by eccentricity. To do this, we produced tasks and 28 preservice mathematics teachers solved. The result findings are as follows. First, students could not solve a target problem because of the absence of the mathematical knowledge of the base problem. Second, although student could solve a base problem, students could not solve a target problem because of the absence of the mathematical knowledge of the target problem which corresponded the mathematical knowledge of the base problem. Third, the various solutions of the base problem helped the students solve the target problem. Fourth, students used an algebraic method to construct a quadratic curve. Fifth, the analysis method and potential similarity helped the students solve the target problem.
The purpose of this study was to investigate knowledge types which the elementary science gifted students would use when solving a science problem, and to examine characteristics and types that were shown in the science problem solving process. For this study, 39 fifth graders and 38 sixth graders from Institute of Education for the Gifted Science Class were sampled in one National University of Education. The results of this study were as follows. First, for science problem solving, the elementary science gifted students used procedural knowledge and declarative knowledge at the same time, and procedural knowledge was more frequently used than declarative knowledge. Second, as for the characteristics in the understanding step of solving science problems, students tend to exactly figure out questions' given conditions and what to seek. In planning and solving stage, most of them used 3~4 different problem solving methods and strategies for solving. In evaluating stage, they mostly re-examined problem solving process for once or twice. Also, they did not correct the answer and had high confidence in their answers. Third, good solvers had used more complete or partially applied procedural knowledge and proper declarative knowledge than poor solvers. In the problem solving process, good solvers had more accurate problem-understanding and successful problem solving strategies. From characteristics shown in the good solvers' problem solving process, it is confirmed that the education program for science gifted students needs both studying on process of acquiring declarative knowledge and studying procedural knowledge for interpreting new situation, solving problem and deducting. In addition, in problem-understanding stage, it is required to develop divided and gradual programs for interpreting and symbolizing the problem, and for increasing the understanding.

In this study, a part of high school science instructional materials is evaluated by Instructional Quality Profile(IQP) based on the Merrill's Component Display Theory(CDT). The CDT is based on the Gagne's assumption of different conditions of learning for different outcomes. The IQP enables the user to check both the consistency and adequacy of existing cognitive instruction. The IQP can be used to predict student performance, and also to design and develop new instructional materials. The instructional components are classified according to 5 task levels; An Use-Generalities on Newly Encountered Examples(UGeg), A Remember-Paraphrased-Generalities(RpG), A Remember-Verbatim-Generalities(RvG), A Remember-Paraphrased-Examples (Rpeg). A Remember-Verbatim-Examples (Rveg). The analyses are composed of 3 parts; Justifying the task level of objectives, Objective-test consistency, and Test-presentation consistency. The objectives, the presentations and the tests given in a teacher's guide and a textbook are analyzed. The results show that the task levels and the content levels of the objectives are not consistent with those of the tests. And the indices of the test-presentation consistency indicate the presentation problems of the instructional materials.
Purpose: This study was conducted to describe mother's child-rearing attitudes and problem conduct of children as perceived by children and to examine correlation between maternal nurturing attitudes and child problem behavior. Method: The participants were 338 fifth and sixth graders who attended two randomly selected elementary schools in the city of G, Gangwon province. Child-rearing attitudes of the mother were rated on a 5-pointed scale that developed by Schaefer and added by Oh & Lee(1982). Problem conduct of children were rated on a 3-pointed scale of the K-YSR by Oh Kyung-Ja et al.(1997). The data were gathered from October 2 to October 28, 2004, and the collected data were analyzed with SPSS 10.0 program. Results: For the children's perception of mother's child-rearing attitude, student had a relatively high mean scores of 3.70±0.44. Correlations between the mother's child-rearing attitude and general characteristics of the children showed statistically significantly different according to grade, father-mother relations, type of residence and extent to which father shared household chores. The mean score for problem conducts of children was 0.47±0.25. The average for their internal behavior problems was 0.52±0.33, and for external behavior problems was 0.44±0.24. There were statistically significantly differences in the behavior problem scores of the children according to the general characteristics of grade, education, occupation, mother-father relations, extent to which father shared in household chores and religion. As to correlation between mother's child-rearing attitude and their problem conduct, every type of attitude had a significantly moderate reverse correlation to every type of behavior problem of the children(r=-.431, p=.000). Conclusion: Mother's child-rearing attitudes might affect the problem conduct of children, and mother should try to treat their children with affection and respect, to maintain good relations with father, and to bring their children up coherently in an autonomous, permissive, positive and democratic manner.
Iranian women are at high risk of low compliance with repeat mammography due to a lack of awareness about breast cancer, negative previous experiences, cultural beliefs, and no regular visits to a physician. Thus research is needed to explore factors associated with repeated mammography participation. Applying the concept of perceived risk as the guiding model, this study aimed to test the fit and strength of the relationship between perceived risk and physician recommendation in explaining repeat mammography. A total of 601 women, aged 50 years and older referred to mammography centers in region 6, were recruited via a convenience sampling method. Using path analysis, family history of breast cancer and other types of cancer were modeled as antecedent perceived risk, and physician recommendation and knowledge were modeled as an antecedent of the number of mammography visits. The model explained 49% of the variance in repeat mammography. The two factors of physician recommendation and breast self-examination had significant direct effects (P < 0.05) on repeat mammography. Perceived risk, knowledge, and family history of breast cancer had significant indirect effects on repeat mammography through physician recommendation. The results of this study provide a background for further research and interventions not only on Iranian women but also on similar cultural groups and immigrants who have been neglected to date in the mammography literature.
Medical humanities education (MHE) is as essential as basic medical sciences and clinical medicine education. Despite the importance of MHE, MHE curriculum development (CD) has proven to be challenging. This critical review examines the MHE CD at one medical school. The critical review methodology was developed based on Kern's six step CD model to systematically examine the CD of "Doctoring and Medical Humanities (DMH)" at the Yonsei University College of Medicine. Five review questions were developed related to (1) necessity, (2) direction and purpose, (3) design, (4) operation, and (5) evaluation of CD based on Kern's model. The review showed that the process of DMH CD mapped to components of Kern's model. The DMH curriculum content selected was closely related to medical practice and aimed to combine the acquisition of understanding and skills by designing a student-participatory curriculum based on clinical cases. Assessment methods that emphasized students' reflections were actively introduced in the evaluation section. Since the regular committee for DMH continued the work of the special ad hoc committees for DMH CD, the CD was effectively completed. However, the planning and evaluation functions and responsibilities of the DMH committee need to be strengthened. Despite the apparent limitations, the fact that students showed a high satisfaction rate and preferred small group discussions based on clinical cases has significant implications in the instructional design of MHE, where changes in self-awareness and attitude are more important than the acquisition of information. It is necessary to systematically review and study students' reflection results produced by the changed assessment methods and to develop assessment indicators for MHE that reflect the achievements of the MHE competencies of students.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) has become a serious epidemic in Korean children. We aimed to investigate the association between vitamin C, E and other nutrients, and serum total IgE/specific IgE levels in children with AD. A total of 119 children (0-24 mo) diagnosed with AD were recruited for this cross-sectional study from a medical center in Seoul. A 24 h recall was used to assess dietary intakes. Serum total and six food-allergen specific IgE levels were measured by CAP-FEIA. Serum vitamin E was also measured but only in 25 out of the total 119 participants. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to estimate the coefficients between serum IgE levels and dietary intake as well as serum vitamin E. Serum vitamin E levels showed a significantly inverse association with serum total IgE and all specific IgE levels (P < 0.05). Fat intake was inversely related with specific-IgEs for egg whites, milk, buck wheat, soy, and peanuts (P < 0.05). Positive associations were found between carbohydrate (CHO) intake and total IgE and specific IgEs to egg whites, milk, soy, and peanuts (P < 0.05). Vitamin C, E and n-3/n-6 fatty acids were not related with serum total IgE and specific IgE levels except for the association between buck wheat and vitamin E. In addition, there were no significant differences between males and females in dietary intake and serum IgE levels by student's t-test. Although dietary vitamin E showed no association with serum IgE levels, serum vitamin E drew a significant inverse relationship with serum IgE levels. The evidence seems to suggest that vitamin E may possibly lower total and specific-IgEs in children with AD, and that it is important to maintain a relatively high serum vitamin E level in children with AD.
Gongneung Weir 2 was built in 1970s to supply water for irrigation. For a long time, the weir was left uncared because of the land use change of the nearby area. The weir is 1.5 m high, and the stream in which the weir was installed has bed materials of fine sands to fine gravels. In 2006, the local government and residents agreed on uninstalling the weir, and the weir was removed completely on April 14. This paper reports the results of three field investigations for the study of the stream morphology change after the weir removal. Changes in grain size distribution, bed elevation, and cross section before and after the weir removal are provided and discussed. Net amount of sediment deposits within 1 km reach of the stream is estimated, and the results illustrates that the sediment process, leading to an equilibrium of the bed, progressed very swiftly, namely within 45 days.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of group music therapy program on alineation of adolescents from enmeshed or disengaged families. The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales III was administered to screen out subjects at a high school in Seoul. Based on the low scores, between 10 and 25, rated on the scale, 4 students were selected from 148 initial respondents. Subjects participated in group music therapy program for 7 weeks and a total of 14 music therapy sessions were provided for them. After the program, content analysis of the subjects' verbal and musical expressions observed during the program was conducted, with regard to the measures of the Student Alienation Scale. The results showed negative self-expression decreased while positive self-concepts increased. These results indicate that by providing the opportunity to experience group cohesiveness and group support, group music therapy program may effectively reduce alienation of adolescents from enmeshed or disengaged families.
