Surface reflectance, as a product of the absolute atmospheric correction process of low-orbit satellite imagery, is the basic data required for accurate vegetation analysis. The Commission on Earth Observation Satellite (CEOS) has conducted research and guidance to produce analysis-ready data (ARD) on surface reflectance products for immediate use by users. However, this trend is still in the early stages of research dealing with ARD for high-resolution multispectral images such as KOMPSAT-3A and CAS-500, as it targets medium- to low-resolution satellite images. This study first summarizes the types of distribution of ARD data according to existing cases. The link between Open Data Cube (ODC), the cloud-based satellite image application platforms, and ARD data was also explained. As a result, we present practical ARD deployment steps for high-resolution satellite images and several types of application models in the conceptual level for high-resolution satellite images deployed in ODC and cloud environments. In addition, data pricing policies, accuracy quality issue, platform applicability, cloud environment issues, and international cooperation regarding the proposed implementation and application model were discussed. International organizations related to Earth observation satellites, such as Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS), are continuing to develop system technologies and standards for the spread of ARD and ODC, and these achievements are expanding to the private sector. Therefore, a satellite-holder country looking for worldwide markets for satellite images must develop a strategy to respond to this international trend.

The goal of the paper is to discuss the recent trend of the configuration of high resolution LEO(Low Earth Orbit) EO(Earth Observation) satellites. The satellite configuration is decided by considering several factors such as mission, payloads, launch vehicle, propulsion and attitude control module. The advent of commercial companies selling satellite's images in 2000's requires additional changes of the satellite system to be capable of obtaining many high resolution images quickly. In order to meet customer's needs, the overall configuration of satellites is designed to be compact and stable without the loss of structural integrity and reliability. Among design changes, the configuration change of satellites is treated intensively in the paper.
On the basis of sensor types, satellites can be classified by two types, which are optical observation satellite and radar observation satellite. A satellite type is selected according to the specific mission. Optical observation satellite is more appropriate for getting high geometric resolution images and radar observation satellite is more appropriate for getting images independent of weather condition the more a demand of satellite increases, the more an importance of information increases. Therefore, development trend and state of earth observation satellite are surveyed and described in this paper. In the future, domestic development of satellites will be planned considering trend of satellite technologies.
In this study, the radiometric signal modeling is performed for the high resolution earth observation system in visible spectral range from space. The medeling includes solar radiation as a source of the radiometric energy, atmosphere and surface albedo of earth, and the spaceborne camera characteristics for the integrated modeling. The final output of the radiometric modeling is the number of electron produced by the detector of electro-optical camera.
Recently, the spatial resolution of earth observation satellites is significantly increased to a few meters. Such high spatial resolution images definitely will provide lots of information for detail-thirsty remote sensing users. However, it is more difficult to develop automated image algorithms for automated image feature extraction and pattern recognition. In this study, we propose a two-stage procedure to extract road information from high resolution satellite images. At first stage, a watershed segmentation technique is developed to classify the image into various regions. Then, a knowledge is built for road and used to extract the road regions. In this study, we use panchromatic and multi-spectral images of the IKONOS satellite as test dataset. The experiment result shows that the proposed technique can generate suitable and meaningful road objects from high spatial resolution satellite images. Apparently, misclassified regions such as parking lots are recognized as road needed further refinement in future research.
Surveillance and reconnaissance intelligence in the space domain will become increasingly important in future battlefield environments. Moreover, to assimilate the military provocations and trends of hostile countries, imagery intelligence of the highest possible resolution is required. There are many methods for improving the resolution of optical satellites when observing the ground, such as designing satellite optical systems with a larger diameter and lowering the operating altitude. In this paper, we propose a method for improving ground observation resolution by using an optical system for a previously designed low orbit satellite and lowering the operating altitude of the satellite. When the altitude of a satellite is reduced in a circular orbit, a large amount of thrust fuel is required to maintain altitude because the satellite's altitude can decrease rapidly due to atmospheric drag. However, by using the critical inclination, which can fix the position of the perigee in an elliptical orbit to the observation area, the operating altitude of the satellite can be reduced using less fuel compared to a circular orbit. This method makes it possible to obtain a similar observational resolution of a medium-sized satellite with the same weight and volume as a small satellite. In addition, this method has the advantage of reducing development and launch costs to that of a small-sized satellite. As a result, we designed an elliptical orbit. The perigee of the orbit is 300 km, the apogee is 8,366.52 km, and the critical inclination is 116.56°. This orbit remains at its lowest altitude to the Korean peninsula constantly with much less orbit maintenance fuel compared to the 300 km circular orbit.

The surface observation probability system (SOPS) of the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT) has been developed based on the climatological distribution of cloud coverage and the expected passage of satellite orbit. While the optical camera loaded on KOMPSAT series has been operated with the purpose of observing earth's surface, it cannot see the surface when an obstacle (i.e., cloud) exists between them. In the present study, cloud information of International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project incorporates into high resolution grid of the KOMPSAT-3 orbit. The characteristics of the KOMPSAT SOPS are discussed.
Korea Aerospace Research Institute has developed an earth observation satellite whose primary mission objective is to provide high resolution electro optical earth images for Geographical Information Systems (GIS) establishment and the applications for environmental, agriculture and ocean monitoring. It was successfully launched into its mission orbit by using a commercial launch vehicle on 18th of May, 2012. This paper describes a series of launch activity at the launch site including its transportation to the launch site. Before conducting the launch site operation, satellite operation plane was prepared. Combining the satellite operation plan and launch vehicle activities, an integrated launch site operation plan and schedule have been drawn up. After arrival of the spacecraft at the launch site, post-ship check out has been conducted. And then it was fuel loaded and integrated with launch vehicle hardware. After completion of final electrical check out, count down procedure was executed. on 18th of May, it was launched into the space and was separated from the launch vehicle as planned. About 3 months of early operation and calibration/validation, now the satellite is conducting its normal mission.
Compared to conventional high resolution acoustic profiling, ultra high resolution shallow acoustic profiling is limited in penetration, yet it provides resolution suitable for detailed seabed investigation in the shallow waters. Possible applications include search of buried pipeline, ship wrecks, and other artificial objects through the detailed mapping of thickness and structure of the upper sedimentary layers. In this study, contaminated sediments were discriminated by the correlation of ultra high resolution profiles with geologic data. In addition, the burial depth of submarine cable was measured by the interpretation of acoustic anomalies in the profiles.

The wideband chirp signal generator to enhance the resolution of synthetic aperture radar of obtaining the earth observation image is needed. This paper deals with designing, manufacturing and testing the wideband digital chirp signal generator having high resolution for LEO earth observation satellite. The wideband digital chirp signal generator is implemented with the memory-map based structure which is mostly applied in the satellite, and consists of the digital module to generate the digital chirp signal and the RF module to perform the quadrature modulation. The I/Q signals stored in the memory of the digital module are D/A converted and delivered to be quadrature modulated with the reference signal of 1275 MHz in the RF module. Furthermore, the test bench and GUI to validate the signal generator function are also developed. It is found that the requirement of 144 MHz bandwidth for the digital chirp signal generator is well met. Finally it is noteworthy that the distortion occurred in the chirp signal generator was compensated by the pre-distortion compensation.
