  • Multiple devices have been installed to reduce exhaust emissions and to increase thermal efficiency. Those devices reduce the exhaust pipe opening area and increase the exhaust gas pressure. The pressure increase disturbs a gas flow and has a bad effect on the engine performance. However there is some study that NOx can be reduced with exhaust gas pressure increase. In this study an engine performance is tested with various opening ratios. The result shows that the fuel consumption rate is reduced in case of little amount of the pressure increase, and NOx is reduced with the pressure increase, while the concentration of the toxic exhaust gases are increased in the case of high back-pressure.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new car engine sealing inspection system based on image processing and understanding. The car engine sealing inspection plays very important role for protecting leakage caused by inappropriate sealing, which is a crucial point for productivity of car engines. The proposed inspection system has been aimed to enhance the previously proposed sealing inspection systems based on image processing, which have high computation complexity and low performance for correctly inspecting some contamination by oil with similar color with that of sealing. Moreover, the previously proposed system has a difficulty in installing the camera system on the sealing machine. The proposed system considers a difference of images before and after sealing obtained from one static camera. By utilizing a difference of images, the proposed system shows very robust performance using a proposed simple depth checking algorithm for some contamination cases by oil with similar color with that of sealing and the total inspection system is simple and cheap to implement. According to the experiments conducted in a real car product line, the proposed inspection system shows better inspection performance and needs smaller implementation cost than three other previously proposed system working in current car sealing inspection systems.

  • The electric controlled marine diesel engine has fuel pump generating the high pressurized fuel for fuel injection to combustion chamber via a common rail. Fuel pump consists of a cam-roller system. Journal bearing installed between a roller and a cam-roller pin is subjected to fluctuating heavy and instant loads by cam lift. First, Kinematic analysis is carried out to predict bearing loads during one cycle acting on the journal bearing. Second, flexible multi-body dynamic analysis and transient elasto-hydrodynamic(EHD) lubrication analysis for journal bearing considering elastic deformation of cam-roller pin, roller and bearing are conducted using AVL EXCITE/PU software to predict lubrication performance. The clearance ratio and journal groove shape providing lubrication oil are important parameter in bearing design having good performance and can be changed easier than other design parameters such as diameter, width, oil supply pressure and bearing material grade. Generally, journal bearing performance is represented by the minimum oil film thickness(MOFT) and peak oil film pressure(POFP). As well as the traditional design parameters(MOFT, POFP), in this study, temperature rise of lubrication oil is also evaluated through the side leakage flow of supplied oil. By the evaluating MOFT, POFP and temperature rise, the optimum bearing clearance ratio is decided.

  • In this Paper, we introduce an efficient on-line software service using an application customized graphic offloading library. The software service based on graphic offloading provides high-end software, like a 3D graphic design tool, as an on-line software service through using a client graphic rendering. When software is executed on server, its graphic works are handled by a client's GPU, while its data works are handled by a server's CPU. To improve the performance, we apply an asynchronous transmission channel scheme to our developed basic graphic offloading engine. Also, we add optimized common module and application specific module to our engine. To do that, we introduce how to implement the application specific module using analyzing patterns of graphic related APIs and messages that are generated by an executed software process. Also, we propose how to design the optimized common module using server side information caching. Finally, through the performance comparison experiment, we show that improved offloading engine has the better performance than old basic offloading engine.

  • A novel process has successfully been developed by overcoming major difficulties through the elimination of number of process steps involved in the Classical Transesterification reaction during the preparation of Fatty Acid Methyl/Ethyl Ester (FAME.FAEE) called biodiesel. The Classical process with cost intensive process steps such as the utilization of excess alcohol, needing downstream distillation for the recovery and reutilization of excess alcohol/cosolvent, unrecoverable homogenous catalyst which consumes vast quantity of fresh distilled water during the purification of the product and downstream waste water treatment before its safe disposal to the surface water body. The Novel Process FAME/FAEE is produced from any vegetable oil irrespective of edible or inedible variety using sonication energy. The novelty of the finding is the use of only theoretical quantity of alcohol along with a co-solvent and reduced quantity of homogeneous catalyst. Under this condition neither the homogeneous catalyst goes to the FAME layer nor is the distillation needed. The same ester also has been prepared in high pressure high temperature reactor without using catalyst at sub critical temperature. The quality of prepared biodiesel without involving any purification step meets the ASTM standards. Blended Biodiesel with Common Diesel Fuel (CDF) and FAME is prepared, characterized and used as fuel in the Kirloskar make CI Engines. The evaluation of the engine performance result of pure CDF, B05 biodiesel, B10 biodiesel of all types of biodiesel prepared by using the feedstock of Soybean (Glycine max) and Karanja (Pongamia pinnate) oil along with their mixed oil provides useful information such as brake power, brake thermal efficiency, brake specific fuel consumption, etc, and established it as ideal fuel for unmodified CI engine.

  • In the study, the effect of low boiling point oxygenates in high viscous fuels on the exhaust emissions has been investigated for a single cylinder DI diesel engine. It was tested to estimated change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for the base fuels and low boiling point oxygenates blended fuel which have six kinds of fuels and various mixed rates. The results of the study may be con eluded as follows By blending of various low boiling point oxygenated agents to lower grade fuels, significant improvements were simultaneously obtained in smoke, CO, PM, SOF and BSEC. Especially, these trends were remarkably obtained by retarding injection timing, by decreasing boiling point and increasing blending contents of additives in case of oxygenated agents rather than non-oxygenated agents. Also, it was revealed that when 20 vol.% DMM added to high viscosity fuels and injection timing was retarded, Nox-smoke trade off relationship was much better than that of ordinary diesel fuel. Thus, lower grade fuels with high viscosity could be expected to be used efficiently and cleanly in diesel operation by blending low boiling point oxygenates.

  • This paper reviews the main drivers forcing change and progress in powertrains for passenger cars in the coming years. The environmental drivers of omissions and CO2 will force better technical performance, but customer demand for increased choice will force change in the basic engine design and provide opportunities for alternate configurations of powertrain. Gasoline engines will embody refinements of valve train actuations as well as developments in combustion, especially direct injection and possibly a lean booated form of direct injection. Nevertheless, the conventional, port injected engine will continue to be the dominant engine for some years to come. The high speed direct injection diesel will very soon supplant its indirect injection predecessor completely. It will take an increasing share of the total powertrain market as improved specific power and refinement make it even more attractive to the customer. Car manufacturers will provide diesel models to satisfy this customer demand as well as using the efficiency of the diesel to enable them to meet their fleet CO2 commitments. Both gasoline and diesel engines will see an increasing degree of electrification and partial hybridisation as efficient flywheel mounted electrical devices become available.

  • Variable valve timing(VVT) mechanisms are used widely for improving fuel consumption and reducing emissions. Most of application, however, are limited in the DOHC engine. Dual equal retard/advance strategy is relatively simple one and can be applied to both SOHC and DOHC engines. In this study, effects of dual equal valve timing retard/advance are investigated to observe the feasibility of VVT system on an SOHC SI engine. The result shows that fuel economy and emissions are improved in the dual retard condition due to increased internal EGR. Some amount of increase in volumetric efficiency can be achieved by advancing valve timing at low speed and by retarding at high speed. In this case, however, full load power is not so much improved as the volumetric efficiency increases because of severe knock. In the dual advance condition, there is no merit in the fuel economy and emission.

  • The design on balance shaft module is performed based on the target specification of engine module as well as the its own dynamic nature under a high speed rotation. However, the specific information for engine module is not always available for non-motor companies even though a reliable analytical result should be attached in the conceptual design process or more detail works. In this paper, the analysis on balance shaft module, both each parts or module itself, is suggested to estimate the performance on the target component with respect to durability and NVH without any consideration of a engine module. This methodology could modify the nominal balance shaft model before the production of prototype such that cost reduction as well as time saving can be expected during design process of balance shaft module.

  • Hydrogen gas has several merits such as lower ignition energy, wide flammability and shorter quenching distance. It leads to high thermal efficiency but backfire occurrence. In this study, feasibility of expansion of BFL(Back-Fire Limit) equivalence ratio and combustion characteristics by a dilution of hydrogen fuel are experimently examined by using experimental heavy duty single cylinder hydrogen fueled engine. As results, it is found that BFL equivalence ratio is expanded to rich range and torque is increased.
