  • A Mercury-free, flat light source which shows high luminance and luminous efficiency simultaneously has been developed. An electrodeless, dielectric barrier discharge is used to generate the plasma using Ne-Xe mixture gas of relatively low gas pressure of a few tens torr in a 4.1 inch diagonal size of flat panel. The basic properties of the long gap glow discharge and its accompanying instabilities, which prevents us from having high luminous efficiency discharge have been analyzed. A new structure and optimized driving methods have been used to generate a glow discharge which shows a wide voltage margin of a few hundred volts. The luminous efficiency and luminance could be 110 lm/W at $1300\;cd/m^2$ and 50 lm/W at $5500\;cd/m^2$.

  • Purpose: To investigate changes of contrast sensitivity with decreasing luminance in photopic conditions. Methods: Contrast sensitivities for 63 university students were investigated at 5 different luminance levels using FACT chart. Results: All contrast sensitivities measured were in the normal range. The peak of contrast sensitivity function was observed to move from 6 to 3 cpd between 40 and $10cd/m^2$. From an intersection point of two hypothetical lines related with contrast sensitivity for 6 and 3 cpd, we could evaluated that the peak moved from 6 to 3 cpd at about $25cd/m^2$. When luminance decreases from 120 to $10cd/m^2$, contrast sensitivity loss at 6 cpd was most, while contrast sensitivity at 1.5 cpd changed little. We could evaluate that at luminance of more than $25cd/m^2$ evaluated approximately, contrast sensitivity was high in the following order of spatial frequency: 18< 12<1.5<3<6 cpd, while at luminance of less than about $25cd/m^2$ as follows: 18<12<1.5<6<3 cpd. Contrast sensitivity losses with decreasing luminance were also evaluated using the decrements and decrement rates of contrast sensitivity. The decrement of contrast sensitivity was the greatest at 6 cpd, while the decrement rate was the greatest at 8 cpd. Conclusions: We propose that evaluation methods used in this research may be available as another methods to evaluate the changes of contrast sensitivity.

  • Due to the development of display technologies for images, the resolution and quality of images are increasing day by day. In accordance with the development of the display technology, researches have been actively conducted on technologies for converting and displaying existing images to higher resolution and quality. Since the results of theses studies are included in the image signal processor, hardware implementation is indispensable. In this paper, we propose a real-time HDR(High Dynamic Range) conversion hardware implementation of LDR(Low Dynamic Range) image using luminance distribution. The proposed method extracts the features of the image using the histogram of the luminance distribution, and extends the luminance and color based on the extracted features. In addition, when the proposed method is designed by hardware IP(Intellectual Property) and its performance is verified, 4K DCI(Digital Cinema Image) can be handled at a rate of 30fps at 265.46MHz.

  • Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have gained tremendous attention as a key material for highly advanced display technologies. The performance of QD light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) has improved significantly over the past two decades, owing to notable progress in both material development and device engineering. The brightness of QLEDs has improved by more than three orders of magnitude from that of early-stage devices, and has attained a value in the range of traditional inorganic LEDs. The emergence of high-luminance (HL) QLEDs has induced fresh demands to incorporate the unique features of QDs into a wide range of display applications, beyond indoor and mobile displays. Therefore it is necessary to assess the present status and prospects of HL-QLEDs, to expand the application domain of QD-based light sources. As part of this study, we review recent advances in HL-QLEDs. In particular, based on reports of brightness exceeding 105 cd/㎡, we have summarized the major approaches toward achieving high brightness in QLEDs, in terms of material development and device engineering. Furthermore, we briefly introduce the recent progress achieved toward QD laser diodes, being the next step in the development of HL-QLEDs. This review provides general guidelines for achieving HL-QLEDs, and reveals the high potential of QDs as a universal material solution that can enable realization of a wide range of display applications.

  • LED lighting is spreading on the strength of LED lighting, and various government policies are being implemented. VLC research which is a wireless communication technology using lighting has been actively conducted, and it has been proven through many studies that a general LED light source such as a high-speed data transmitter can be used. But from now on, one of the main problems is the noise from side lights, which can be compared to the noise of radio broadcasts. So in this paper, we proposed a noise canceling model to remove the interference of ambient light by using an optical filter for a detachable VLC channel. In order to verify the proposed model, various high brightness RGB LED modules were used for comparative analysis. In addition, the applicability was verified through experiments using High Luminance LED lighting which is applied in real life.

  • OLED has good efficiency of power consumption by having no power consumption from black color as different with LCD. when it has white color, all RGB pixel should be glowing with high power consumption and that can make it has short life time. This paper suggest the way of low power consumption for OLED panel using adaptive luminance enhancement with color compensation and implement it as hardware. This way which is based on luminance information of input image makes converted luminance value from each pixel in real time. There is with using the basic idea of chromaticity reduction algorithm, showing new algorithm of color correction. And performance of proposed method was confirmed by comparing the conventional method in experiments about 48.43% current reduction. The proposed method was designed by Verilog HDL and was verified by using OpenCV and Windows Program.

  • Recent research efforts have focused on combining high dynamic range imaging with super-resolution reconstruction to enhance both the intensity range and resolution of images. The processes developed to date start with a set of multiple-exposure input images with low dynamic range (LDR) and low resolution (LR), and require several procedural steps: conversion from LDR to HDR, SR reconstruction, and tone mapping. Input images captured with irregular exposure steps have an impact on the quality of the output images from this process. In this paper, we present a simplified framework to replace the separate procedures of previous methods that is also robust to different sets of input images. The proposed method first calculates weight maps to determine the best visible parts of the input images. The weight maps are then applied directly to SR reconstruction, and the best visible parts for the dark and highlighted areas of each input image are preserved without LDR-to-HDR conversion, resulting in high dynamic range. A new luminance control factor (LCF) is used during SR reconstruction to adjust the luminance of input images captured during irregular exposure steps and ensure acceptable luminance of the resulting output images. Experimental results show that the proposed method produces SR images of HDR quality with luminance compensation.

  • When an image is converted from HDR (high dynamic range) to LDR (low dynamic range), a tone mapping process is the essential component. Many TMOs (tone mapping operators) have been motivated by human vision which has lower physical luminance range than that in real scene. The representative of human vision properties which motivate TMOs is the local adaptation. However, TMOs are ultimately compressing image information such as contrast, saturation, etc. and the compression causes defects in image quality. In this paper, in order to compensate the degradation of the image which is caused by TMOs, the visual acuity-based edge stop function is proposed for applying the property of human vision to base-detail separation. In addition, using CSF (contrast sensitivity function) which represents the relationship among spatial frequency, contrast sensitivity, and luminance, the sharpness filter is designed and adaptively applied to the detail layer in regard to surround luminance.
