This study aimed to investigate the blood glucose regulatory effect of barley noodles contained mulberry leaves water extract (MLWE) in diabetic mice in order to provide fundamental data as a functional food. ICR mice were divided into six groups as follows: normal control, positive control, barley control, mulberry control, barley+MLWE 2.5% and barley+MLWE 5% groups. High fat/high carbohydrate diet was fed for 4 weeks and diabetes mellitus was induced by i.p. injection of streptozotocin and nicotinamide. After diabetes induction, experimental diet was supplemented for 2 weeks and simultaneous measurement of body weight, blood glucose (including glucose tolerance test), liver function and blood lipid profile was conducted. As a result, there was less decrease in body weight compared to the positive control group in the groups that supplemented barley and MLWE together than the group ingesting barley and MLWE alone. In addition, regulatory effects on blood glucose, liver function and blood lipid concentration were also stronger in barley and MLWE concurrently supplemented groups. Consequently, combination of barley and MLWE was effective in the regulation of body weight, blood glucose, liver function, and blood lipid in diabetic mice. Therefore, this recipe could be a promising strategy for beneficial effects in the patients of diabetes mellitus.
Purpose: The zinc transporter ZIP7 is known to regulate glucose metabolism in skeletal muscles, and skeletal muscles are known to play a critical role in glycemic control. The present study examines the effects of dietary zinc supplementation on the blood glucose concentration and expression of ZIP7 in skeletal muscle obtained from obese mice fed a high-fat diet (HF). Methods: C57BL/6J male mice were divided into three groups and were administered either a HF (60% of total calories from fat), HF supplemented with zinc (HF+Zn, 60% calories from fat + 300 mg zinc/kg diet), or low-fat diet (CON, 10% calories from fat), for 15 weeks. Results: Compared to CON group mice, the final body weights and adipose tissue weights were significantly increased, while the skeletal muscle weights were significantly decreased in mice belonging to the HF and HF+Zn groups. The HF+Zn group had significantly lower levels of fasting blood glucose concentrations than the HF group. Similarly, zinc supplementation significantly decreased the HF-elevated area under the curve values obtained from the oral glucose tolerance test. Skeletal muscle protein levels of ZIP7 in samples obtained from the HF group were significantly decreased as compared to the CON group. Conversely, the skeletal ZIP7 protein levels in the HF+Zn group were significantly increased as compared to the HF group. Moreover, the protein levels of phosphorylated-AKT and glucose transporter 4 in the skeletal muscle were significantly increased subsequent to zinc supplementation. Conclusion: Our data demonstrates that zinc supplementation up-regulates the skeletal muscle ZIP7 expression, which is associated with improved glucose tolerance in the obesity.
In this study, change in water-dissolved oxygen (DO) was analyzed under various synthetic water qualities and nanobubbles (NBs) application conditions, such as gas type, initial DO as well as water dissolved, suspended and organic matters contents. When oxygen, rather than air, was introduced into nitrogen-desorbed ultra-pure water, the stagnation time was significantly increased. It took ten days for DO concentration to drop back to saturation. The higher the initial DO concentration, the longer particles were observed above saturation due to particle stability improvement. The oxygen mass transfer rate of 0.0482 mg/L/min was found to reach a maximum at an electrolytic concentration of 0.75 g/L, beyond which the transfer rate decreased due to adsorption of negative ions of the electrolyte at the interface. High levels of turbidity caused by suspended solids have become a barrier to dissolution of NBs oxygen into the water solution, and thus affected the transfer performance. On the other hand, by applying NBs for just an hour, up to 7.2% degradation of glucose as representative organic matter was achieved. Thus, NBs technology would maintain a high DO extent for an extended duration, and thus can improve water quality provided that water chemistry is closely monitored during its application.
Pretreatment of wastepaper using aqueous glycerol under high pressure was studied to enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis. The pretreatment was conducted over a wide range of conditions including temperatures of $150{\sim}170^{\circ}C$, sulfuric acid concentrations of 0.5~1.5%, and reaction times of 30~90 minutes. After the effect of glycerol concentration on the pretreatment performance was investigated, 70% glycerol was selected. As glycerol concentration was increased, higher digestibility was achieved due to higher lignin removal. The optimum condition was found to be around $160^{\circ}C$, 1%, and 60 minutes. At this condition, 60% and 35% of hemicellulose and lignin, respectively, were removed, while only 5% of cellulose was lost. The enzymatic digestibility was 76%, meaning that 73% of the glucan present in the initial substrate was recovered as glucose after enzymatic hydrolysis. Also, it was found that the temperature and acid concentration than the reaction time were more strongly related to the compositional removals and enzymatic digestibility.

The bed stability of Streamline DEAE (p = 1.2 g/mL) in a 20mm (i.d.) glass expanded bed contactor, and its performance on the recovery of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) from unclarified yeast homogenate were investigated. A residence time distribution study showed that a stable expanded bed was achieved. The theoretical plate and Bodenstein numbers determined were 25 and 53, respectively. A recovery yield of 87% and purification factor of 4.1 were achieved in the operation using 5% (w/v) biomass concentration feedstock. The performance of the anion exchange EBAC was still considerable good at a biomass concentration as high as 15% (w/v).
This study investigated growth and hematological changes in parrotfish Oplegnathus fasciatus (~200 g/fish) reared under different total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) concentrations (0, 4, or 8 mg/L) for 6 weeks. Survival rates of parrotfish in all experimental groups did not significantly differ, as they were all ~100%. Although specific growth rate (SGR), weight gain, and daily feed intake in the high TAN concentration group (TAN8) were significantly lower than in the other two groups, there was no significant difference between the TAN4 group and the control group, (TAN0), indicating that parrotfish have a strong resistance to ammonia toxicity. As for temporal changes of the major blood components, cortisol increased as a result of stress caused by the high ammonia concentration in the TAN8 group. For this reason, the concentrations of energy sources such as glucose and total cholesterol were reduced. However, there was little difference among all experimental groups in concentrations of liver function glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), and nutrient factors, such as total protein and albumin.

The production of a carotenoid astaxanthin, a growth-associated principal pigment, is limited in a batch cultivation, because a high glucose concentration severely inhibits the cell growth and also influences the carotenoid production. Therefore, a fermentation strategy including effective chemicals for the high-level production of cells and astaxanthin by a mutant strain Phaffia rhodozyma AJ-6-1 was developed in a fed-batch culture. First, a production medium for maximizing the cell and astaxanthin yields was formulated and optimized. Using this optimized medium, the highest cell and astaxanthin concentrations obtained were about 38.25 g/1 and 34.77 mg/1, respectively. In addition, an attempt was made to increase the amount of astaxanthin using effective chemicals such as ethanol and acetic acid, which are known at an inducer and/or precursor of carotenoid synthesis. When either 10g/1 ethanol or 5 g/1 acetic acid was added to investigate the resulting astaxanthin content, a relatively high astaxanthin concentration or 45.62 mg/l and 43.87 mg/1, respectively, was obtained, and the cell concentrations also increased slightly under these conditions. Therefore, these results imply that a fed-batch culture of the mutant strain P. rhodozyma AJ-6-1 could be effectively employed in the commercial production of astaxanthin, although the factors affecting the productivity remain to be elucidated.
In clinical chemistry tests, the interfering substances such as hemoglobin, lipid, bilirubin, and drugs, etc. can cause the changes of test results performed by spectrophotometrical methods. We evaluated the effects of interfering substances on the test results by adding interfering substances on the samples in the 19 kinds of clinical chemistry tests such as aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, gamma-glutamyltransferase, total protein, albumin, glucose, total cholesterol, total bilirubin, triglyceride, uric acid, calcium, inorganic phosphours, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and C-reactive protein using newly implemented automatic chemical analyzer Toshiba TBA-C8000 under the direction of CLSI EP07-A guideline. Hemolytic samples show increased concentration of total protein, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and lactate dehydrogenase and reduced concentration of total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase by interfering effect. Hyperlipemic samples show increased concentration of total protein and alkaline phosphatase and reduced concentration of low density lipoprotein cholesterol. The samples with conjugated bilirubinemia show increased concentration of inorganic phosphours, otherwise the samples with unconjugated bilirubinemia show no interference or allowable range in the test result.
Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of cellulose addition on high (Exp. I) and low (Exp. II and III) dry matter barley straw silages. In Exp. I : 1 kg barley straw + 16 g glucose + 600 g water + 0 g as control (E0G), + 2 g (E2G), + 4 g (E4G), + 6 g (E6G), and + 8 g (E8G) of cellulose as treatments were ensiled. In Exp. II and III, 10 g glucose was and was not added, respectively, into 2 kg barley straw + 0 g (E8W, E8T) of cellulose as treatments. Samples were stored for 10 (Exp. I) and 7 (Exp. II and III) months at $21^{\circ}C$. The effect of cellulose addition on the fermentation and breakdown of the polysaccharides component in the silos at ensiling occurred more markedly at low dry matter silages rather than at the high ones. All cellulose treated silages were well preserved (pH below 5 in Exp. I and below 4 in Exp. II and III), while lactic acid and ethanol concentration increased. The fibrous fraction (ADF, NDF, crude fiber, hemicellulose, and cellulose) significantly (p<0.01) decreased (except hemicellulose content in Exp. I) compared with corresponding untreated silages. In vitro dry matter digestibility values (IVDMD) were similar for all silages. The present study showed that cellulose addition improved the potential nutritional and fermentation quality of barley straw silage.

This study was performed to obtained the optimal delignified condition of exploded wood on the acid hydrolysis with sulfuric acid. Wood chips of pine wood(Pinus desiflora), oak wood(Quercus serrata) and birch wood (Betula platyphylla var. japonica) were treated with a high pressure steam (20-30kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 2-6 minutes). The exploded wood was delignified with sodium hydroxide and sodium chlorite, and then hydrolyzed with sulfuric acid. The result can be summerized as follows ; In the exploded wood treated with sodium hydroxide, the optimal concentration of sodium hydroxide was 1% as content of lignin in the exploded wood. Lignin content of exploded wood treated with sodium chlorite was lower then that sodium hydroxide. The maximum reducing sugar yield of exploded wood treated with 1% sodium hydroxide was lower than non-treated exploded wood. In the case of sodium chlorite treated, the maximum reducing sugar yield was hgher than non-treated exploded wood. Sugar composition of acid hydrolysis solution was composed of xylose and glucose residue, and the rate of glucose residue was increased in high pressure condition.
