  • A novel zero voltage and zero current switching (ZVZCS) full bridge (FB) PWM converter is proposed. The new converter improves the drawbacks of the previously proposed ZVZCS FB PWM converters [1-5]. A simple auxiliary circuit with neither lossy components nor active switches achieves ZVZCS of the primary switches. Since the proposed converter has many advantages such as simple auxiliary circuit, high efficiency, and low voltage stress of the rectifier diode, it is very attractive for the high power applications. The principles of operation and design considerations are presented. The experimental verifications from 2.5kW prototype converter operating at 70kHz are presented.

  • In this paper, aiming at high-voltage applications, transformer windings schemes of multiple-output two-transistor flyback converters are investigated, which are mainly based on the stray capacitances effect. First, based on a transformer model including equivalent stray capacitors, the operational principle of the converter is presented, and the main influence of its stay capacitors is determined. Second, the windings structures of the transformer are analyzed and designed based on the stray capacitances effect. Third, the windings arrangements of the transformer are analyzed and designed through a coupling analysis of the secondary windings and a stray capacitance analysis between the primary and secondary windings. Finally, the analysis and design conclusions are verified by experimental results obtained from a 60W laboratory prototype of a multiple-output two-transistor flyback converter.

  • Individual DC voltage balance problem is an inherent issue for cascaded H-bridge (CHB) based converter. When the CHB-based static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is operating at zero current mode, the software-based individual DC voltage balancing control techniques may not work because of the infinitesimal output current. However, the different power losses of each cell would lead to the individual DC voltages unbalance. The uneven power losses on the local supplied cell-controllers (including the control circuit and drive circuit) would especially cause the divergence of individual DC voltages, due to their characteristic as constant power loads. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an adaptive voltage balancing module which is designed in the cell-controller board with small size and low cost circuits. It is controlled to make the power loss of the cell a constant resistance load, thus the DC voltages are balanced in zero current mode. Field test in a 10kV STATCOM confirms the performance of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents the novel low-performance single-phase voltage regulator which has common arm between the AC/DC and DC/AC power converters and adopts appropriate switching strategy, resulting in the reduction of the number of switching devices. Moreover, by introducing the method to replace the method to replace the conventional AC condenser in filter circuit with the new low-cost type using two DC condenser, the whole voltage regulator system can be more compact, simpler and less expensive than conventional ones. The fully digital controller is designed using high speed DSP, and the proposed system is validated through the experimental results.

  • This paper presents a novel series connected DC/DC converter and a proper variable phase shift switching method in order to obtain high voltage ratio for fuel cell system. The proposed series connected DC/DC converter has same rectifier and LC filter for DC output voltage, so it can reduce the number of passive devices regardless of the converter number. In the conventional constant phase shift switching method, the proposed series connected DC converters have inverse bias output voltage. In order to overcome this problem, a simple but proper variable phase shift switching method is proposed in the a novel series connected DC/DC converter. In order to verify the proposed system, simulation and experiments are implemented.

  • The recent use of distributed power generation systems constructed with DC-DC converters has become extremely popular owing to the rising need for environment friendly energy generation power systems. In this study, a new single-phase five-level inverter for off-grid applications constructed with a multilevel DC-DC step-up converter is proposed to boost a low-level DC voltage (36 V-64 V) to a high-level DC bus (380 V) and invert and connect them with a single-phase 230 V rms AC load. Compared with other traditional multilevel inverters, the proposed five-level inverter has a reduced number of switching devices, can generate high-quality power with lower THD values, and has balanced voltage stress for DC capacitors. Moreover, the proposed topology does not require multiple DC sources. Finally, the performance of the proposed topology is presented through the simulation and experimental results of a 400 W hardware prototype.

  • This paper proposes a new configuration of bidirectional intelligent semiconductor transformer with rating of 1.9kV/127V, 2kVA. The proposed transformer consists of high-voltage high-frequency AC-DC rectifier, and low-voltage DC-DC and DC-AC converters. The operational feasibility of proposed transformer was verified by computer simulation with PSCAD/EMTDC software. Based on the simulation results, a hardware prototype with rating of 1.9kV/127V, 2kVA was built and tested in the lab to confirm the feasibility of hardware implementation. Using three units of this transformer, a 3-phase transformer with rating of 3.3kV/220V, 6kVA can be built.

  • A three-leg inverter-type isolated DC-DC Converter that can use 220 and 440 V grid input voltages is introduced. The secondary circuit structure of the proposed topology is center-tap, which is the same as the conventional phase-shifted full-bridge converter. However, the primary circuit structure is composed of a three-leg inverter structure and a transformer, in which two primary windings are connected in series. The proposed circuit structure has a wider input voltage range than the conventional phase-shifted full-bridge converter, and the circulating-current on the primary-side is reduced. In addition, the voltage stress at the secondary rectifier is greatly improved, and high efficiency can be achieved at a high input voltage by removing the snubber circuit added to the conventional converter. Prototype converters with input DC of 311 V, output of 622 V, and 50 V and 6 kW class specifications were designed and manufactured to verify the validity of the proposed topology; the experimental results are presented.

  • A balanced forward-flyback converter for high efficiency and high power factor using a foward and flyback converter topologies is proposed in this paper. The conventional AC/DC flyback converter can achieve a good power factor but it has the high offset current through the transformer magnetizing inductor, which results in a large core loss and low power conversion efficiency. And, the conventional forward converter can achieve the good power conversion efficiency with the aid of the low core loss but the input current dead zone near zero cross AC input voltage deteriorates the power factor. On the other hand, since the proposed converter can operate as the forward and flyback converters during switch turn-on and turn-off periods, respectively, it cannot only perform the power transfer during an entire switching period but also achieve the high power factor due to the flyback operation. Moreover, since the current balanced capacitor can minimize the offset current through the transformer magnetizing inductor regardless of the AC input voltage, the core loss and volume of the transformer can be minimized. Therefore, the proposed converter features a high efficiency and high power factor. To confirm the validity of the proposed converter, theoretical analysis and experimental results from a prototype of 24W LED driver are presented.
