  • The main two drawbacks of the Sin91e Stage PFC (SS-PFC) converters employing a DCM Boost PFC cell are relatively high voltage stress on the bulk capacitor and the input current harmonic distortion. The high voltage stress on bulk capacitor makes the SS-PFC converter impractical in a universal input application and the input current harmonic distortion lowers power factor. In this paper a selective variable frequency control that reduces the voltage stress on the bulk capacitor and the input current harmonic distortion is proposed. Computer simulation results of the proposed control method are presented.

  • This paper proposes a digitally controlled buck converter insensitive to process, voltage and temperature and capable of three modes of operation depending on the state of the output voltage. Conventional digital-controlled buck converters utilized A/D converters, counters and delay line circuits for accurate output voltage control, resulting in increasing the number of counter and delay line bits. This problem can be resolved by employing the 8-bit and 16-bit bidirectional shift registers, and this design technique leads a buck converter to be able to control duty ratio up to 128-bit resolution. The proposed buck converter was designed and fabricated with a CMOS 180 nano-meter 1-poly 6-metal process, generating an output voltage of 0.9 to 1.8V with the input voltage range of 2.7V to 3.6V, a ripple voltage of 30mV, and a power efficiency of up to 92.3%. The transient response speed of the proposed circuit was measured to be 4us.

  • In the present industrial field, the demand for the development of the solar power source device and the charging device for the solar cell is gradually increasing. The solar charger is largely divided into a DC-DC converter that converts the voltage generated from the sunlight to a charging voltage, and a battery and a charger that are charged with an actual battery. The conventional charger topology is used either as a Buck converter or a Boost converter alone, which has the disadvantage that the battery can not always be charged to the desired maximum power as input and output conditions change. Although studies using a topology capable of boosting and stepping have been carried out, Buck-Boost converters or Sepic converters with relatively low efficiency have been used. In this paper, we propose a new Buck Boost combination power converter topology structure that can use Buck converter and Boost converter at the same time to improve inductor current ripple and power converter efficiency caused by wide voltage control range like solar charger.

  • This study proposes an optimized design of a dual active bridge converter for a low-voltage charger in a military uninterrupted power supply (UPS) system. The dual active bridge converter is among various bi-directional DC/DC converters that possess a high-efficiency isolated bi-directional converter. In the general design, the zero-voltage switching(ZVS) region is reduced when the battery voltage is high. By contrast, efficiency is low because of high conduction losses when the battery voltage is low. Variable switching frequency is applied to increase the ZVS region and the power conversion efficiency, depending on battery voltage changes. At the same duty, the same power is obtained regardless of the battery voltage using the variable switching frequency. The proposed method is applied to a 5 kW prototype dual active bridge converter, and the experimental results are analyzed and verified.

  • In this paper, a new definition of short-circuit ratio concept for multi-converter HVDC systems is proposed. Analysis results of voltage interaction between converters show that the reactive power-voltage characteristic of a converter has a dominant effect on voltage interaction level compared with its active power-voltage characteristic. Such a relation between converter reactive power and voltage interaction level supports taking the former into account in the definition of short-circuit ratio concept for multi-converter systems. The proposed definition is verified by the method of maximum power curve for various system configurations. Furthermore, a formula to calculate transient overvoltage for multi-converter systems is derived based on the proposed definition, and the efficiency of the derived formula is verified.

  • In medium-voltage and high-voltage high-power converters, the switching devices need to operate at a low switching frequency to reduce power loss and increase the power capacity. This increases the delay of the signal sampling and PWM. It also makes the cross-couplings of the d-q current components more severe. In addition, the LCL filter has three cross-coupling loops and is prone to resonance. In order to solve these problems, this paper establishes a complex vector model of an LCL type grid-connected converter. Based on this model, two multiple decoupling current control strategies with passive damping / notch damping are proposed for the LCL type grid-connected converter. The proposed strategies can effectively eliminate the cross-couplings of the converter, achieve independent control of the d-q current components, expand the stable region and suppress the resonance of the LCL filter. Simulation and experimental results verify the correctness of the theoretical analysis and the feasibility of the proposed strategies.

  • The development of a compact two-wavelength Nd:YAG laser for dental and ENT applications is presented. The Nd:YAG resonator generates either 1.06$\mu$m or 1.32$\mu$m. The wavelength selection is made at the control panel. The Nd:YAG laser parameters at 1.06$\mu$m are ; the maximum pulse duration of 150$\mu$s, repetition rates of I-100Hz, and the maximum average power of 25W. At 1.32$\mu$m, the pulse duration is the same where the repetition rates and the maximum average power are I-30Hz and lOW respectively. High voltage power supply consists of a simmer module and two identical high voltage DC converters. In order to make a complete medical laser system, an optical fiber delivery unit, foot pedal and water spray handpiece are also developed. The wavelength selection is reliable since no movement of optical or mechanical components is required. The high voltage power supply is compact, easy to be maintained and applicable for other laser systems due to its modular design.

  • The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is generally considered to be a promising topology for medium-voltage and high-voltage applications. However, in order to apply it to high-power applications, a huge number of switching devices is essential. The numerous switching devices lead to considerable switching losses, high cost and a larger heat sink for each of the switching device. In order to reduce the switching losses of a MMC, this paper analyzes the performance of the conventional discontinuous pulse-width modulation (DPWM) method and its efficiency. In addition, it proposes a modified novel DPWM method for advanced switching losses reduction. The novel DPWM scheme includes an additional rotation method for voltage-balancing and power distribution among sub modules (SMs). Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness and performance of the proposed modulation method in terms of its switching losses reduction capability.

  • DC bus electrolytic capacitors are used in variety of equipments as smoothing element of the power converters because it has high capacitance for its size and low price. It is responsible for frequent breakdowns of many static converters and inverter drive systems. Therefore it is important to diagnosis monitoring the condition of an electrolytic capacitor in real-time to predict the failure of power converter. In this paper, the on-line remote diagnosis monitoring system for DC BUS electrolytic capacitors of power converter using low-cost type Zigbee communication modules is developed. To estimate the health status of the capacitor, the equivalent series resistor(ESR) of the component has to be determined. The capacitor ESR is estimated by using RMS computation using AC coupling method of DC link ripple voltage/current. The Zigbee communication-based experimental results show that the proposed remote DC capacitor diagnosis monitoring system can be applied to DC/DC converter and UPS successfully.
