To predict the aerodynamic characteristics of the grid fins from subsonic to supersonic speeds, low fidelity SW as well as CFD SW were applied. VLM(Vortex Lattice Method) and SE(Shock-Expansion) method were used at subsonic and supersonic speed domain respectively for the rapid prediction of low fidelity SW. For 2 configurations of the grid fins, the CFD computations and tests using the trisonic wind tunnel were also performed to compare the results of the grid fins. The results of low fidelity SW, CFD SW and the wind tunnel tests data were agreed well each other. Through further research on the grid fins, the effective parameters of the grid fin configurations according to the speed regime will be investigated.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the dynamic roll-damping characteristics of a spin-stabilized projectile in wind-tunnel testing. In the present work, the high-speed wind-tunnel tests for the roll-damping measurements were conducted on a finned spin-stabilized projectile model in the Agency for Defense Development's Trisonic Wind Tunnel at spin rates about 8,000 rpm. The test Mach numbers ranged from 0.6 to 0.9, and the angles of attack ranged from 0 to +15 deg. The evaluation of the bearing friction parameter was also conducted to eliminate the tare damping moment from the aerodynamic damping moment.

Due to the complex terrain around high-speed railways, the windbreaks were established along different landforms, resulting in irregular windbreak transition regions between different subgrade infrastructures (flat ground, cutting, embankment, etc). In this paper, the effect of a windbreak transition on the wind flow around railways subjected to crosswinds was studied. Wind tunnel testing was conducted to study the wind speed change around a windbreak transition on flat ground with a uniform wind speed inflow, and the collected data were used to validate a numerical simulation based on a detached eddy simulation method. The validated numerical method was then used to investigate the effect of the windbreak transition from the flat ground to cutting (the "cutting" is a railway subgrade type formed by digging down from the original ground) for three different wind incidence angles of 90°, 75°, and 105°. The deterioration mechanism of the flow fields and the reasons behind the occurrence of the peak wind velocities were explained in detail. The results showed that for the windbreak transition on flat ground, the impact was small. For the transition from the flat ground to the cutting, the influence was relatively large. The significant increase in the wind speeds was due to the right-angle structure of the windbreak transition, which resulted in sudden changes of the wind velocity as well as the direction. In addition, the height mismatch in the transition region worsened the protective effect of a typical windbreak.

In this study, we measure the aerodynamic forces acting on an AREX train in a crosswind by wind tunnel testing. A detailed test model scaled to 5% of the original and including the inter-car, under-body, and the bogie systems was developed. The aerodynamic forces on the train vehicles have been measured in a 4 m $\times$ 3 m test section of the subsonic wind tunnel located in Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). The aerodynamic forces and moments of the train model on two different track models have been plotted for various yaw angles, and the characteristics of the aerodynamic coefficients have been analyzed at the experimental conditions.

A test section of a supersonic wind tunnel was designed for the analysis of flow characteristics over a backward-facing step with Mach 1.0 slot injection in a supersonic flow of Mach 2.5. The cavity flow of a high-speed vehicle is very complex at supersonic speed, so it is necessary to do experiments using supersonic wind tunnels to verify numerical analysis methods. The previous 2D symmetrical nozzle was replaced with an asymmetrical nozzle. The inviscid nozzle contour was designed using Method of Characteristics (MOC), and the boundary layer thickness correction was reflected by experimental data from the wind tunnel. The results were compared with a CFD analysis. The PID control system was changed to be based on the change of tank pressure. This improved the control efficiency, and the run times of supersonic flow increased by about 1 second. The flow characteristics over a backward facing step with slot injection were visualized by a Schlieren device. This equipment will be used for an experimental study of the film cooling effectiveness over a cavity with various velocities, mass flows, and temperatures.

Cold regions with high air density and wind speed attract wind energy producers across the globe exhibiting its potential for wind exploitation. However, exposure of wind turbine blades to such cold conditions bring about devastating impacts like aerodynamic degradation, production loss and blade failures etc. A series of wind tunnel tests were performed to investigate the effect of icing on the aerodynamic properties of wind turbine blades. A baseline clean wing configuration along with four different ice accretion geometries were considered in this study. Aerodynamic force coefficients were obtained from the surface pressure measurements made over the test model using MPS4264 Simultaneous pressure scanner. 3D printed Ice templates featuring different ice geometries based on Icing Research Tunnel data is utilized. Aerodynamic characteristics of both the clean wing configuration and Ice accreted geometries were analysed over a wide range of angles of attack (α) ranging from 0° to 24° with an increment of 3° for three different Reynolds number in the order of 105. Results show a decrease in aerodynamic characteristics of the iced aerofoil when compared against the baseline clean wing configuration. The key flow field features such as point of separation, reattachment and formation of Laminar Separation Bubble (LSB) for different icing geometries and its influence on the aerodynamic characteristics are addressed. Additionally, attempts were made to understand the influence of Reynolds number on the iced-aerofoil aerodynamics.
Wind tunnel tests are performed so as to investigate the aerodynamic drag characteristics of HEMU-400x, next generation Korean high speed train. The experiments of 1/20 scaled 5-car train model are done at 30, 40, 50, 60m/s with a normal bogie, a bogie cover, and a streamlined shape. The flat plate with knife edge are installed to minimize the effect of boundary layer of wind tunnel for the train model. The aerodynamic drag reduction was more by a streamlined shape than by a bogie cover from a normal bogie. Based on the experimental results, the aerodynamic drag of HEMU-400x test train(6-car) was predicted. It is prediceted that More bogie cover could reduce more aerodynamic drag of the test train in replacement of normal bogies.
Trains emerging on a streamlined bridge-girder may have salient interference effects on the aerodynamic properties of the bridge. The present paper aims at investigating these interferences by wind tunnel measurements, covering surface pressure distributions, near wake profiles, and flow visualizations. Experimental results show that the above interferences can be categorized into two primary effects, i.e., an additional angle of attack (AoA) and an enhancement in flow separation. The additional AoA effect is demonstrated by the upward-moved stagnation point of the oncoming flow, the up-shifted global symmetrical axis of flow around the bridge-girder, and the clockwise-deflected orientation of flow approaching the bridge-girder. Due to this additional AoA effect, the two critical AoAs, where flow around the bridge-girder transits from trailing-edge vortex shedding (TEVS) to impinging leading-edge vortices (ILEV) and from ILEV to leading-edge vortex shedding (LEVS) of the bridge-girder are increased by 4° with respect to the same bridge-girder without trains. On the other hand, the underlying flow physics of the enhancement in flow separation is the large-scale vortices shedding from trains instead of TEVS, ILEV, and LEVS governed the upper half bridge-girder without trains in different ranges of AoA. Because of this enhancement, the mean lift and moment force coefficients, all the three fluctuating force coefficients (drag, lift, and moment), and the aerodynamic span-wise correlation of the bridge-girder are more significant than those without trains.

To investigate the mechanism of ballast-flying phenomena by strong wind induced by high-speed trains, wind velocity in the vicinity of the track has been measured using 16-channel Kiel-probe array and detailed flow structure near the surface of the track has been analyzed. The position at which the underflow fully develop has been examined in order to assess the driving force of the turbulent flow under train and the results yields that the turbulent flow owing to the cavity of the inter-car as well as the friction force at the underbody of the train is the main reason of the strong wind under high-speed train. The preceding wind tunnel test results has been introduced to assess the probability of ballast-flying during the passage of the high-speed train by comparing the results from field-measuring. The results shows that when the G7 train as well as the KTX train runs at 300km/h, about 25m/s wind gust is induced just above the tie and the probability for small ballast under 50g to fly is about 50% when it is on the tie. If the G7 train runs at 350km/h, the wind gust just above the tie increases to 30m/s, therefore more radical countermeasure seems to be needed.
In this study, HfC was coated on two types of carbon/carbon composites coated with SiC by vacuum plasma spraying(VPS). The experiment was performed using a plasma wind tunnel with heat flux of 5.06 MW/㎡ for 120 s heat flux before and after the coating. The mass ablation rate was calculated through the mass change before and after the test, and the length change was measured by using calipers and high speed camera. The oxidation/ablation behavior were observed by FE-SEM with EDS analysis of the specimens cross section. The plasma wind tunnel test results showed that the coated specimens had low weight loss and length change, and high oxidation/ablation resistance. However, two types of the specimens tested under the same conditions were different in the ablation behavior and ablation rate, and it was evaluated that the cylindrical type had higher oxidation/ablation resistance.
