  • The blade vibration problem of bladed disk is the most critical subject to consider since it directly affects the stable performance of the engine as well as life of the engine. Especially, due to complicated vibration pattern of the bladed disk, more effort was required for vibration analysis and test. The research of measuring the vibration of the bladed disk, using NSMS(Non-intrusive stress measurement) instead of Aeromechanics testing method requiring slip ring or telemetry system with strain gauge, was successful. These testing can report the actual stresses seen on the blades; detect synchronous resonances that are the source of high cycle fatigue (HCF) in blades; measure individual blade mis-tuning and coupled resonances in bladed disks. In order to minimize the error being created due to heat expansion, the tip timing sensor is installed parallel to the blade trailing edge, yielding optimal result. Also, when working on finite element analysis, the whole bladed disk has gone through three-dimensional analysis, evaluating the family mode. The result of the analysis matched well with the test result.

  • Low-cycle thermal fatigue problem resulting from multiple use of a liquid rocket engine has to be considered for the development of a reusable launch vehicle. In this study, life prediction equations suggested by previous researchers were compared as applied to various copper alloy cases to predict fatigue lives from tensile test data. The present study has revealed that among the presently considered life prediction methods, universal slopes method provides the best life prediction result for the copper alloys, and the modified Mitchell's method provides the best life prediction result for oxygen free high conductivity (OFHC) copper.

  • In this study, two types of fatigue tests were conducted. First, cyclic bending tests were performed using the micro-bending tester. A four-point bending test method was adopted, because it induces uniform stress fields within a loading span. Second, thermal fatigue tests were conducted using a pseudo power cycling machine which was newly developed for a realistic testing condition. The pseudo-power cycling method makes up for the weak points in a power cycling and a chamber cycling method. Two compositions of solder are tested in all test condition, one is lead-free solder (95.5Sn4.0Ag0.5Cu) and the other is eutectic lead-contained solder (63Sn37Pb). In the cyclic bending test, the solder that exhibits a good reliability can be reversed depending on the load conditions. The lead-contained solders have a longer fatigue life in the region where the applied load is high. On the contrary, the lead-free solder sustained more cyclic loads in the small load region. A similar trend was detected at the thermal cycling test. A three-dimensional finite element analysis model was constructed. A finite element analysis using ABAQUS was performed to extract the applied stress and strain in the solder joints. A constitutive model which includes both creep and plasticity was employed. Thermal fatigue was occurred due to the creep. And plastic deformation is main damage for bending failure. From the inelastic energy dissipation per cycle versus fatigue life curve, it can be found that the bending fatigue life is longer than the thermal fatigue life.

  • Super duplex stainless steel has long life in severe environments by showing the enough strength and corrosion resistance. Therefore, the fracture mechanics approach needs to support the structural strength integrity for the used material. In this study, fatigue crack propagation behavior was investigated to super duplex stainless steel with 0.2% nitrogen. The various volume fraction and distribution of austenite structure for applied specimen in test were obtained by changing the heat treatment temperature and cycle. From test results, fatigue crack propagation rate showed two kinds of tendency between da/dN and ${\Delta}K$ according to distribution of austenite structure and structure anisotropy.

  • High cycle bending fatigue of socket welded small bore pipe was characterized, and also the fatigue crack initiation of small bore pipe was monitored in situ by the acoustic emission (AE) technique. The STS 316L stainless steel specimens were prepared by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process having the artificial defect (i.e., lack of penetration) and defect free at the root. The fatigue failure was occurred at the loc for high stress and root for relatively low stress. The crack initiation cycles ($N_i$) was defined to the abrupt increase in AE counts during the fatigue test, and then the cracks were observed by the radiographic test and electron microscope before and after the fatigue crack initiation cycles. The socket welded pipe damaged by bending fatigue was studied regarding the welding defect, failure mode, and crack initiation cycles for the diagnosis and monitoring.

  • The high stress, low cycle fatigue test were carried out on HT80 plates with artificial part-through notch. The LBB conditions by the net section stress approach was examined in detail. Finite element methods for the state of deformation were also applied and the results were compared with the results from experiments. From the test results, it was noted that the LBB condition in fatigue test was dependent upon the maximun load change before and after the crack penetration. The LBB criterion By the net section stress approach were slightly dependent on initial crack size. It was shown that the state of deformation can be used to predict whether the component is likely to show LBB condition or they will be broken rapidly.

  • In this study, fatigue life of the motor block bracket units for KTX-Sancheon trains was assessed. Design evaluation for railway structures was performed based on the UIC 566 regulation, and test and evaluation of fatigue life in welded parts was performed in accordance with standard ERRI B 12/RP17 and ERRI B 12/RP60. The actual vehicle dynamic stress testing was executed in KTX-Sancheon service line with the service operating speed. The dynamic stress was measured with commercial data acquisition system (MGC plus). The cumulative damage was evaluated by applying standard BS 7608 - Class F and cycle counting was used rain-flow counting method. As a result, the motor block bracket units for KTX-Sancheon trains was designed to fit the regulation and the safety of fatigue life for 30 years, assuming that KTX-Sancheon trains travels 600,000km annually, were confirmed under current operating conditions.

  • Microstructure, mechanical and fatigue behaviors of TiCN and TiN/TiCN thin films, deposited on quenched and tempered STD61 tool steel, were investigated by using XRD, XPS, hardness, adhesion and fatigue tests. The TiCN thin film is grown along the (100), (111) orientation, whereas the TiN/TiCN thin film is grown along the (111) orientation. The preferred orientation of TiN/TiCN thin film strongly depends on the TiN buffer layer whose orientation is (111), as is well-known. The TiN/TiCN thin film showed the higher adhesion compared with TiCN single layer because the TiN buffer layer, having good toughness, reduces the effects of the lower hardness of substrate. In the high cycle tension-tension fatigue test, the fatigue life of the TiCN and the TiN/TiCN coated steel increased approximately two to four times and five to nine times respectively compared with uncoated specimens. The TiN buffer layer in multilayer thin films plays an important role in reducing residual stress and fatigue crack initiation, and then in restraining the fatigue propagation.

  • The naval structure exposes to environmental vibration of shafted propeller propulsion and engine vibration. The shipboard equipments are developed compliance to MIL-STD-167-1A. For this purpose, vibration fatigue life of shipboard equipment for long lives should be estimate via an analytical approach and vibration test. In this paper, High cycle fatigue strength of cast aluminum alloy A356 using shipboard equipment was evaluated by 14 S-N method. The stress applied on the structure is evaluated by an analytical method(frequency response analysis with sinusoidal input and a fatigue evaluation) to simulate a MIL-STD-167-1A test. The frequency with the maximum equivalent stress is shown by Max. test frequency and the vibration fatigue life of shipboard equipment was estimated by Miner's rule.
