  • In this paper, radial basis function networks with two hidden layers, which employ the K-means clustering method and the hierarchical training, are proposed for improving the short-term predictability of chaotic time series. Furthermore the recursive training method of radial basis function network using the recursive modified Gram-Schmidt algorithm is proposed for the purpose. In addition, the radial basis function networks trained by the proposed training methods are compared with the X.D. He A Lapedes's model and the radial basis function network by nonrecursive training method. Through this comparison, an improved radial basis function network for predicting chaotic time series is presented. (author). 17 refs., 8 figs., 3 tabs.

  • In this paper, an algorithm for recovering the 3-D shape from a single shaded image is proposed. In the proposed algorithm, by using the relation between the height and surface gradient (p, q), a set of linear equations is derived from the linearized reflectance function. Then the 3-D surface is recovered by employing the conjugate gradient technique. In order to improve the convergence speed of the solution, we also employ the hierarchical basis function and multiresolution images in the algorithm. A method for determining the regularization parameter, which is determined by trial and error in the conventional approach, is also introduced. In addition, the proposed algorithm attempts to recover the 3-D surface without requiring the boundary conditions, making it suitable for a real-time implementation. Simulation results for real image as well as synthetic image are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we proposed tracking detection methodology using information granulation-based fuzzy radial basis function neural networks (IG-FRBFNN). According to IEC 60112, tracking device is manufactured and utilized for experiment. We consider 12 features that can be used to decide whether tracking phenomenon happened or not. These features are considered by signal processing methods such as filtering, Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) and Wavelet. Such some effective features are used as the inputs of the IG-FRBFNN, the tracking phenomenon is confirmed by using the IG-FRBFNN. The learning of the premise and the consequent part of rules in the IG-FRBFNN is carried out by Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering algorithm and weighted least squares method (WLSE), respectively. Also, Hierarchical Fair Competition-based Parallel Genetic Algorithm (HFC-PGA) is exploited to optimize the IG-FRBFNN. Effective features to be selected and the number of fuzzy rules, the order of polynomial of fuzzy rules, the fuzzification coefficient used in FCM are optimized by the HFC-PGA. Tracking inference engine is implemented by using the LabVIEW and loaded into embedded system. We show the superb performance and feasibility of the tracking detection system through some experiments.

  • The use of a two dimensional hierarchical elements are investigated for the incompressible flow computation. The construction of hierarchical elements are explained by both a geometric configuration and a determination of degrees of freedom. Also a systematic treatment of essential boundary values has been developed for the degrees of freedom corresponding to higher order terms. The numerical study for the poisson problem shows that the computation with hierarchical higher order elements can increase the convergence rate and accuracy of finite element solutions in more efficient manner than the use of standard first order element. for Stokes and Cavity flow cases, a mixed version of penalty function approach has been introduced in connection with the hierarchical elements. Solutions from hierarchical elements showed better resolutions with consistent trends in both mesh shapes and the order of elements.

  • In this study, we report niobium (Nb) with hierarchical porous structure produced by a one-pot, HF-free electrochemical etching process. It is proved experimentally that a well-defined hierarchical porous structure is produced from the combination of a limited repetition of pulse etching and high concentration of aggressive anion (i.e., SO42-), which results in hierarchical pores with high order over 3. A formula is derived for the surface area of porous Nb as a function of the hierarchical order of pores while the experimental surface area is estimated on the basis of the electrochemical gas evolution rate on porous Nb. From the comparison of the theoretical and experimental surface areas, an in-depth understanding was gained about porous structure produced in this work in terms of the actual pore shape and hierarchical pore order.

  • A two dimensional hierarchical elements are investigated for a use on the incompressible flow computation. The construction of hierarchical elements are explained through the tensor product of 1-D hierarchical functions, and a systematic treatment of essential boundary values has been developed for the degrees of freedom corresponding to higher order terms. The numerical study for the poisson problem showed that the present scheme can increase the convergence and accuracy of finite element solutions, and can be more efficient than the standard first order with many elements. Also, for Stokes and cavity flow cases, solutions from hierarchical elements showed better resolutions and future promises for higher order solutions.

  • The description of enterprise activities is the basis fur process improvement and information system building. To describe such activities, it is necessary to model the enterprise activities from the abstraction level to the implementation level in a stepwise and integrated form. For this reason, several modeling approaches have been proposed. However, most of them lacked the stepwise or integration aspects although some of them covered overall levels. This study proposes the hierarchical modeling approach for integrating the enterprise activity model from the abstraction level to the implementation level systematically. It is composed of five modeling levels such as function level, process level, task level, document workflow level, and event flow level. This study discusses the definition and characteristics of each level and compare our modeling frame with other modeling methodologies in case study.

  • A mixed degree finite element solutions using hierarchical elements are investigated for convergences on a 2-D simple cases. Elements are generated block by block and each block is assigned an arbitrary solution degree. The numerical study showed that a well constructed blocks can increase the convergence and accuracy of finite element solutions. Also, it has been found that for higher order elements, the convergence trends can be deteriorated for smaller mesh sizes. A procedure for a variable fixed boundary condition has been included.

  • A three dimensional finite element generation code has been developed attaching simple blocks. Block can be either a quadrature or a cube depending on the dimension of a subject considered. Finite element serendipity basis functions are employed to map elements between the computational domain and the physical domain. Elements can be generated with wser defined progressive ratio for each block. For blocks to be connected properly, a block should have a consistent numbering scheme for vertices, side nodes, edges and surfaces. In addition the edge information such as the number of elements and the progressive ratio for each direction should also be checked for interfaces to have unique node numbers. Having done so, user can add blocks with little worry about the orientation of blocks, Since the present the present code has been written by a Visual Basic language, it can be developed easily for a user interactive manner under a Windows environment.

  • In this paper we propose new image coding using wavelet transform. The new method constructs hierarchical bit plane and progressively transports each bit plane. The Proposed algorithm not only supports multi-resolution, dividing original image into special band and various resolution using Antonini's wavelet basis function but also reduces blocking effects that come into JPEG. In encoding time this algorithm considers each band characters and priority of transport order, and applies to fast search of image.
