  • This study was conducted to find out the scientific maize breeding protocol for developing high performing single cross hybrid using introduced U.S. elite inbred lines; the pattern of inheritance, heterosis and heritabilities of six agronomic traits were studied in the progenies derived from five crosses (Mo17/B14A, Va85/B73, C103/ND203, FR35/Oh43, Wf9/A632). Among the five cross combinations, the cross combination of Mo17/B14A showed the highest heterosis for the most agronomic traits. Among 6 agronomic traits, the grain yield showed the highest heterosis effect in most cross combinations. Most of the agronomic traits in this study showed more than 50% heritability for six cross combinations, with an exception of the ear length trait. In conclusion, since Mo17/B14A showed excellent performance for most of the agronomic traits, these inbred lines were desirable combination and regarded as superior germ plasm sources for F1 hybrid development. The results of current studies will be utilized for developing high performing single cross hybrid from maize inbred lines, and will be used for the further genetic analysis of agronomic traits and maize breeding programs.

  • For the post-buckling and elasto-plastic analysis of shell structures, the total Lagrangian formulation is presented based upon the degenerated shell element. Geometrically correct formulation is developed by updating the direction of normal vectors in the iteration process and evaluating the total Green-Lagrange stain corresponding U total displacements. In the calculation of the stiffness matrix, the element formulation takes into account the effect of finite rotation increments by retaining second order rotation terms in the incremental displacement field. The selective or reduced integration scheme using the heterosis element is applied in order to overcome both shear locking phenomena and the zero energy mode. The load/displacement incremental scheme is adopted for geometric non-linear F .E. analysis. Based on such methodology, the computer program is developed and numerical examples to demonstrate the accuracy and the effectiveness of the proposed shell element are presented and compared with references's results.

  • Cutouts in the beams or plates are often unavoidable due to inspection, maintenance, ventilation, structural aesthetics purpose, and sometimes to lighten the structures. Therefore, there will be a substantial reduction in the strength of the structure due to the introduction of the cutouts. However, these cutouts can be reinforced with the different patterns of ribs (stiffener) to enhance the strength of the structure. The present study highlights the influence of the elliptical cutout reinforced with a different pattern of ribs on the stability performance of such stiffened composite panels subjected to non-uniform edge loads by employing the Finite element (FE) technique. In the present formulation, a 9-noded heterosis element is used to model the skin, and a 3-noded isoparametric beam element is used to simulate the rib that is attached around a cutout in different patterns. The displacement compatibility condition is employed between the plate and stiffener, and arbitrary orientations are taken care by introducing respective transformation matrices. The effect of shear deformation and rotary inertia are incorporated in the formulation. A new mesh configuration is developed to house the attached ribs around an elliptical cutout with different patterns. Initially, a study is performed on the panels with different stiffener schemes for various ply orientations and for different stiffener depth to width ratios (ds/bs) to determine an optimal stiffener configuration. Further, various parametric studies are conducted on an obtained optimal stiffened panel to understand the effect of cutout size, cutout orientation, panel aspect ratio, and boundary conditions. Finally, from the analysis, it can be observed that the arrangement of the stiffener attached to a panel has a major impact on the buckling capacity of the stiffened panel. The stiffener's depth to width ratio also significantly influences the buckling characteristic.

  • To examine taxonomic relationships among 24 leaf mustard allies (Brassica juncea) derived from domestic collections and introduced species, principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis on 16 morphological characters were carried out. Of 16 characters, total fresh weight, total dry weight, shoot fresh weight and leaf length were useful characters for the understanding of taxonomic relationships among them. Cluster analysis using scores of the principal components indicated that 24 leaf mustards could be grouped into domestic collections and introduced species at 1.0 of average distance in UPGMA. Moreover, in experiment of $F_{1}$ recombination test, heterosis appeared greatly in Sanchiohbachirimen takana A ${\times}$ Akaohba takana, Goheung namyang ${\times}$ Sanchiohbachirimen takana B, and Goheung namyang ${\times}$ Akaohba takana cross combinations. Sanchiohbachirimen takana A and Akaohba takana have a high parent combining ability for breeding cultivars using cytoplasmic male sterility.

  • This study was performed to obtain the basic informations for red dry pepper fruit with more pericarp weight(or in percentage) with a complete diallel cross(excluding reciprocals) using eight cultivars. Heterosis, combining ability and inheritance of the dry red fruit weight and its components(stem, placenta, seed, and pericarp) were evaluated. The results obtained were summarized as follows : Dry weight/fruit and its four antomical components were heavier in the earlier harvest fruit than in that of the later fruit. They showed 1% significance among parents and $F_1s$, and those of $F_1$ were significantly heavier than in parent. All characters in earlier fruit of parent, however, were higher than in later fruit of $F_1$. Dry weight percentage of pericarp to dry weight/fruit was highest followed by seed. Percentage of pericarp in the later fruit was increased while the seed decreased and percentages of stem and placenta were not differed between the earlier and later fruit. $F_1$ hybrids above the higher parent were observed in all characters. Mean heterosis (%) was positive in all characters while mean heterobeltiosis (%) was negative excepting seed and dry weight/fruit. GCA and SCA variances were highly significant, and GCA vaiances were greater than SCA in all characters. The directions of dominance were positive. Partial dominance was shown in stem, complete dominance in placenta, pericarp and dry weight/fruit, and over dominance in seed. The effective genes were estimated as one for stem and placenta, and two for seed, pericarp and dry weight/fruit. Heritabilities in narrow and broad sense were higher.

  • Combining ability and heterosis for $F_{1}$ population obtained $5{\times}5$ half diallel cross in sesame were estimated for six quantitative characters. The parental varieties used for diallel cross were Yangbaek and Ansan of normal type, Suwon 177 and 195 of placenta adhesion type (PA) and SIG960320-5-1-1 of indehiscent type (ID). PA and ID type are shattering-resistant sesames and Yangbaek and Ansan are shattering sesames. The high heterosis of $F_{1}$ hybrids was expressed in the number of capsules per plant (NC), grain yield per plant (GY) and number of branches per plant (NB). Shattering.ate (SR) showed high positive heterosis toward increase of seeds shattering in all the combination of $F_{1}$ generation which was presumed because the characters connected with shattering resistance of seeds were governed by recessive gene. At the analysis of combining ability, highly significant general combining ability (GCA) effects were observed on all the characters in $F_{1}$ generation, significant specific combining ability (SCA) effects were observed on the NC, GY and SR. GCA variances were greater than SCA variance, which suggested that additive gene effects were greater than other nonadditive gene effects. Considering the estimated GCA effects, Suwon 195 (PA type) was found to be good parent for SR and GY, SIG960320-5-1-1 (ID type) was poor for GY and plant height. SCA effect for NC was great in Yangbaek/Suwon 195, SCA for GY was great in Ansan/SIG960320-5-1-1, and SCA for decrease of SR was great in Ansan/Suwon177.

  • The genetic variances and combinding ability of some useful characters were analyzd on sixty four combinations in the 8$\times$8 diallel cross using the four Japanese races(Jam 107, Jam 113, Jam 117 and Jam 119) and the four Chinese races(Jam 108, Jam 114, Jam 118 and Jam 120). The eight quantitative characters were the total larval stage period(TP), the fifth larval instar period(FP), the female cocoon total weight(FW), the male cocoon total weight(MW), the female cocoon layer weight(FL), the male cocoon layer weight(ML), the female cocoon layer ratio(FR), and the male cocoon layer ratio(MR). The results were as follows: The analysis of the genetic variance and the combining ability in the TP and the FP. In TP and FP, h2N was less than h2B. The GCA, SCA and RCA were at a high significant level. Hl/D and (Hl/D)1/2 ere large. The heterosis were small minus. E and D were large. The r was in the positive direction, because the recessive genes were mainly expressed as a short rearing periods. The regressions of the characters were passed below 0 point, because the characters in the TP and the FP were appeared overdominant. The order of the dominance in the TP of the parents were in the order of Jam 119>Jam 113>Jam 117>Jam 108>Jam 120>Jam 114>Jam 107>Jam 118, and that in the FP of the parents were followed in the orders of Jam 117>Jam 113>Jam 108>Jam 114>Jam 119>Jam 107>Jam 120>Jam 118. The analysis of the genetic variance and the combining ability of the FW and the MW. In the FW and the Mw, h2N was less the h2B. The GCA and SCA were large but RCA was little. Hl/D and (Hl/D)1/2 in the parents were large. Heterosis was large. E was appeared large in the FW, and small in the MW. D was small. The r was of the minus direction, because the dominance genes were less expressed. The regression of the these characters were padded below 0 point, because the characters in FW and MW were appeared overdominant. The orders of the dominance in the FW of the parents were as the order of Jam 107>Jam 108>Jam 119>Jam 113>Jam 114>Jam 120>Jam 117>Jam 118, and in the MW of them in the order of Jam 114>Jam 120>Jam 108>Jam 113>Jam 107>Jam 119>Jam 117>Jam 118. The analysis of the genetic variance and the combining ability of the FL and ML. In the FL and the ML, h2N was less than h2B. GCA and SCA were large. RCA was little. Hl/D and (Hl/D)1/2 ere large. Heterosis was large. The r was in the negative direction, because the dominance genes were less expressed. The regression of the characters of FL and ML were appeared overdominant. The dominance in the FL of parents ere in the order of Jam 120>Jam 114>Jam 119>Jam 119>Jam 118>Jam 107>Jam 117>Jam 113, and the ML of them in the order of Jam 114>Jam 108>Jam 120>Jam 117>Jam 118>Jam 107>Jam 119>Jam 113. The analysis of the genetic variance and combining ability of the FR and the MR. In the FR and the Mr, h2N was less than h2B. GCA was large. The SCA and RCA were little. In the FW, Hl/D was large but (Hl/D)1/2 was a little. In MR, Hl/D and (Hl/D)1/2 both were a littel. Heterosis was a little. E in the FR was in the negative direction, because the dominance genes were less expressed but that in the MR was the positive direction because the recessive genes were mainly expressed. The order of the dominance in the FR of the parents were in the order of Jam 117>Jam 114>Jam 108>Jam 120>Jam 118>Jam 119>Jam 107>Jam 113 and that in the MR these were in the order of Jam 114>Jam 117>Jam 108>Jam 118>Jam 107>Jam 119>Jam 120.
