The differential heterodyne interferometer (DHI) is suitable for precise measurement of step height and line width, since its differential configuration can significantly reduce disturbances from the environment [1,2]. Like most phase measuring interferometers, however, the DHI is limited, in that it can obtain only the phase from 0 to 2π, because of the sinusoidal nature of the optical interference involved. Thus, the measurable step height is limited to one quarter of the wavelength of the light source. This study describes a confocal differential heterodyne interferometer (CDHI) for measuring step heights of several micrometers, with a high resolution and line width with high repeatability. The CDHI has a simple structure and rapid measurement speed.
In heterodyne laser interferometer, we use a phase difference between two beams to calculate target's length. However, there exist an nonlinearity error when measuring length in nanoscale. It is caused from frequency-mixed problem of two polarized beams, called cross talks. This fact limits the usefulness of an laser interferometer. To compensate the error, we propose a WLS(weighted least square) algorithm, which will reduce nonlinearity error and make a better optimization in heterodyne laser interferometer.

This paper proposes a high precision measurement technique to obtain the height of gage block. The proposed technique is consisted of two steps : In the first step, laser position transducer and electric micrometer are adopted to obtain a coarse value of the height of gage block, and then, second, heterodyne laser interferometry is adopted to acquire the precision value. The experiment results show that accuract in the order of a few nanometer is achieved for the gage blacks of as high as a few millimeter.
In this paper, The Influence of chromatic fiber dispersion on the transmission distance of MMW(millimeter-wave) link is analyzed and discussed. It is shown that dispersion significantly limits the transmission distance in intensity modulated direct detection and heterodyne links operating in the above 20㎓ frequency region by inducing a carrier to noise penalty on the transmitted signal. We analyze and discuss the influence of dispersion induced CNR(Carrier to Noise Ratio) penalty for direct detection and heterodyne method from simulation.
In this paper we introduce a compensation of nonlinearity Heterodyne laser interferometer. The Laser Interferometer is used for length measurement in various industries. However, it has nonlinearity error caused by the imperfect optical equipment. This acts as an obstacle in the measurement improvement. We propose an adaptive error compensation using least mean square(LMS) to improve precision.

The performance of upstream transmission in SCM-PON is generally limited by the presence of OBI which is caused by the beating of two or more lasers. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for reducing OBI problem by using heterodyne detection with an additional LD as a local oscillator, resulting that the RF signal is shifted to the other spectal band. In addition, it is possible that the proposed method can provide the cost-effective solution thanks to the loop-back mechanism using R-SOA in ONUs. The performance is superior when the spectral width of LD is smaller and the power difference between the transmission LD and the oscillation LD is bigger. System configuration and design consideration are discussed. Performance of the systems is evaluated by simulator called OptSim. It is expected to provide WDM/SCM-PON system not only cost-effective but also efficient in increasing the number of subscribers.
A new hybrid, heterodyne, fiber-optic electric field sensor scheme is presented. In this scheme, a dual polarization, dual frequency, stabilized He-Ne laser is used for the light source of the interferometer, Probe beam is delivered to the sensor head using polarization maintaining fiber. In the sensor head, $LiTaO_3$ electro-optic crystal is used for sensing element. Phase retardation is induced on the dual frquency, dual polarization probe beam due to applied electric field across the crystal. Induced phase retardation is demodulated by in-phase and quadrature demodulation technique. In this way, we can obtain optimum sensitivity for electric field measurement regardless a quasi-static phase difference between two polarization components.
Two type interference air refractometers have been developed by using a frequency stabilized He-Ne laser in a transverse magnetic field. The refractometers were based on symmetric multiple pass interferometer. In this system, One part of the beams passed through air whose refractivity is to be measured and the other part of the beams passed through a vacuum champer to be used as a reference. Several measurements were performed under normal air condition. Maximum difference between two interference refractometers was ${\pm}2{\times}10^{-8}$.

An innovative system for the alternative continuous wide spectral spatial heterodyne spectrometer (ACWS-SHS) is proposed. The relationship between the ACWS-SHS and the wide spectral spatial heterodyne spectrometer (WS-SHS) at the resolution limit, the spectral range, the grating diffraction efficiency and the interference fringes contrast ratio has been analyzed theoretically. Through the comparison of the theoretical analysis and simulation results, it is found that the two systems for the WS-SHS and the ACWS-SHS have the same resolution limit and spectral range, which are ${\delta}{\sigma}$ and ${\sigma}_{01}$, while in the ACWS-SHS system the critical diffraction efficiency of echelle grating is 68.39% and the critical contrast ratio of interference fringes is 0.4135, which is much better than the performance of the WS-SHS system. Therefore, the ACWS-SHS reduces the high requirements for the precision of equipment and expands the application field of SHS effectively.
