Multiple Meanings of Silence in Charlotte Brontë's Villette

  • Lucy Snowe, the heroine and narrator of Charlotte Brontë's Villette, has oftentimes been studied in terms of her silence. However, the critics' approach to Lucy's silence has been mostly negative as her silence has often been interpreted as an illustration of her sense of absence, powerlessness, unreliability, or mental deprivation. Lucy's silence, however, is complex in nature as the functions and meanings of her silence vary depending on when, why, and how silence is performed. This article particularly looks into the moments in which Lucy's silence generates multifarious meanings and resonances depending on the contexts in and the purpose for which it is exercised, such as a sense of wholeness, marginality, power and individuality. First of all, Lucy's silence about herself during the recount of her childhood days at Bretton implies the feeling of entirety and peacefulness where the identification of the "I" becomes unnecessary. Second, Lucy's silence in relation to Paulina at Bretton denotes her social marginality and powerlessness. Third, as an older self/narrator, Lucy chooses to be silent in order to exert power over the readers. And lastly, Lucy's conscious refusal to tell the readers what she already knows also serves to reveal her sense of individuality. Through the instances of Lucy Snowe's silence in Bronte's Villette, I demonstrate the possibility to reveal various aspects of one's self through silence.

  • 본 논문은 디즈니 만화영화 "겨울왕국"에서 특이한 마술적 힘을 가지고 있는 엘사를 주인공으로 놓고, 그녀가 왜 두려움과 분노의 감정을 가지게 되었고 이런 감정을 어떻게 마술로 표출하는 지를 분석하는 것을 일차적 목표로 정한다. 마술을 걸기만 하고 풀지 못하는 자유롭지 못한 엘사가 자신의 왕국을 떠나가는 것이 그녀의 두려움과 분노에 찬 얼어붙은 왜곡된 감성을 스스로 얼음성에 갇히게 만드는 상징적 행위로 해석한다. 둘째로는 디즈니의 여성성에 대한 새로운 양상을 보여주는 본 "겨울왕국"은 환상적 애니메이션이 실제 사회의 여성적 억압에 대한 분노와 그 두려운 해방감에 관한 문제해결과 얼마나 유사한 패턴을 가지고 있는 지를 시청자가 엘사와의 감정이입을 통한 감정 상호작용을 통해 분석하고자 한다. 마지막으로 본 논문은 스토리텔링 기법을 통해서 엘사를 중심으로 시청자의 두려움이나 분노가 어떤, 그리고 얼마나 증폭적인 감정 상호작용을 함으로써, 인간 보편적인 분노와 두려움의 감성인 엘사의 감성이 어디서 근원되었고, 왜 마술로 독특하게 상징적 재현이 되며, 그 감성을 어떻게 해결하는 지의 과정을 독자와의 스토리텔링 상호작용을 통해서 분석한다.

  • As movies and dramas which show traditional clothes and fusion clothes are getting popular these days, lot of people are paying attention to these dress and ornaments. And as for the domestic collections which seem to reflect this trend, various fusion style clothes are getting widely adopted by people. Therefore, this study analyzed and considered the clothes designs when the country started to open itself to other countries, by selecting a movie titled "YMCA baseball team", a movie to ascertain vigorous historical verification, and by conducting the prior study and using the DVD capture program. This study is meaningful in that based on the comparison study on the costumes, it clarifies the degree of costumes(clothes) acceptance at the point of nation's opening to other countries, which is the source of fusion style, and further shed light on the role that the movie costumes will play. From this study, we can get the following conclusions. First, through the theoretical background it can be known that when the country opened itself to outside world the dress and ornaments of the time was adopted in a top-down way, namely, first adopted by the royal family and the upper class, which could have easy access to the western civilization and institutions, and then the low class later. Second, in the movie titled 'YMCA baseball team' the costumes were designed through the strict and thorough historic verification, and it can be confirmed that various dress and ornaments adopted at the time of nation's opening to the outside world centered around the clothes design for new women. Third, 'YMCA baseball team is evaluated as a movie that reproduces that time well and as a media that provides an effective clue to the dress and ornaments adopted by the public when the country opened itself to the outside world.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to take around the oriental medical treatment about substance related disorder in china. Method : We review the studies which are published by six different journal in China since 1992 to 2002 involved in substance related disorders. Result 1. The kinds of substance which is the subject of each study. It suggest that the narcotics-withdrawal patients in china take kinds of opium many more than phillopon or barbiturate, cocain etc. especially the heroine takes the most portion in the kinds of opium. 2. The type of chinese medicine demonstration which is about the addiction and withdrawal. There are many symptoms in the each period of withdrawal, According to the each period demonstration, the herbal formula must be different. 3. The formula used in treatment and the substance which is used in common Codonopsis radix is widely used, and pinellia ternata, aractylodes japonica, citrus nobilis, vegetable worms, angelica gigas, zizyphus jujuba, panax ginseng, astragalus membranaceus etc are also used in treatment. 4. The methods of acupunture treatment Hapkok(LI-4), Naegwan(PC6), and Sanyinjiao(SP6) are the widely used acu-points. in addition to these acupoints, there are waegwan(TE5) choksamli(ST36) hanggan(LR2)etc. Conclusion : We expect that this review about substance related disorders in TCM help the clinical study of substance related disorders in Korean medicine.

황순원 「소나기」의 문화융합 콘텐츠 사례를 통해 본 인문학적 상상력 (Humanistic Imagination through the Case of Cultural Convergence Contents of Hwang Soon-won 「Sonagi」)

  • 본 논문은 1953년 5월 "신문학"지에 발표된 황순원의 "소나기"가 텔레비전 단막극, 애니메이션, 영화, 뮤지컬, CF, 문학콘서트 등과 같은 다양한 문화융합 콘텐츠로 재생산 되면서 원작과 달라진 부분을 인문학적 상상력 측면에서 고찰한 것이다. TV문학관 <소나기>에서는 원작에 존재하지 않은 인물인 소녀의 '엄마'와 소년의 동생인 '석이'라는 인물을 새롭게 창조하여 스토리를 보다 치밀하게 전개하였고, 애니메이션에서는 주인공의 대화가 말소리로 제시되어 작품의 주제를 효과적으로 드러내었다는 점이 특징적이다. 영화에서 여주인공은 "소나기"의 결말 부분이 마음에 들지 않는다면서 "죽거든 저를 업어준 사내애를 산 채로 같이 묻어 달라"는 독특한 상상력으로 소설을 차용한다. 어린이의 손목시계 겸 휴대폰 기능이 있는 키즈워치 CF에서도 "소나기"가 변용되었다. 또한 뮤지컬 <소나기>에서는 약 2톤 정도의 물을 사용하여 관객들에게 보다 생생함과 현장감을 주었다. 이처럼 소설을 원작으로 한 다양한 문화융합 콘텐츠에서는 원작의 내용이 매체의 특성에 따라 변용되면서 연출가의 독특한 상상력의 세계가 관객과 시청자에게 전달되었다.

오페라 "파우스트" 무대 의상의 현대적 디자인 개발 I - 남녀 주인공들의 의상을 중심으로 - (The Modernization of Stage Costume of Opera "Faust" - Focused on A Hero & Heroine's Costume -)

  • Modernization movement has affected classical operas. Today, classical operas are often re-interpreted from the modern perspective and played differently only with the storyline maintained. This study examines modernization of opera costumes. For this study, the author worked as one of costume design staff for "Faust," which was played in Sungnam Art Center from November 24, 2005 to November 27, 2005 in commemoration of the opening of the center. The following outcomes are drawn from this study. Two types of costumes were designed for Faust. An old black shirt, grey checkered trousers, and a white gown were designed to express the old Faust, a respected scholar in his 50s, who was erudite and competent. Red checker of the shirt represented passion and blue checker of the shirt symbolized youth. The cotton trousers were beige, the most favorite color among male college students. For Mephistopheles, a white suit, black shirt, and white neck tie were designed to express the Devil, who changed his face instantly. A white suit symbolized that Mephistopheles looked like an angel, while a black shirt suggested that Mephistopheles, in reality, was the Devil. A white one-piece dress and light jade green cardigan were designed for Margarete, who was innocent and virtuous. The white dress represented innocence and purity of Margarete and the light jade green cardigan symbolized a maiden pure.

<라 트라비아타>를 중심으로 본 코르티잔(Courtesan) 복식에 관한 연구 (A Study on Courtesan Clothing in the Relation to )

  • The purpose of this study is to grasp creation background and social position of courtesan which is treated in social and cultural context and its effect on fashion and research representative courtesans from ancient hetaera to the 19th century and their costume characteristics. Its another purpose is to analyze the costume of Violetta, who is a heroine of opera and its costume characteristic as a courtesan. Most Courtesan clothing were made from bright color, silk and lace which were light, or transparent materials. Using silk and cashmere which were the symbols of class, she took the cutting edge fashion and struggled to break the social barriers. The clothing which the Courtesan wore always became a gossip among people and popular to the designers who could show their creativities because the Courtesan boldly wore the cloth like movie actresses or stars. The Courtesan who led the fashion not only showed the fashion as a simple expression of the beauty but also as a socio-cultural phenomenon which reflected their social awareness with arts, and changed according to the situations of the time and people. Violetta's party dress which was shown in the first and third acts of showed the shoulders and chest because of the deep and wide cut decollete, the waist was tightened with a corset as much as possible, and the opulent hips were inflated by the crinoline so when they walked it was swaying. Also it was decorated with splendid materials such as silk and lace, and sparkling jewels, fans, and neckless and even in case of the general clothing in the second act, it was decorated with braids and lace, frills and ribbons. In the third act, the weakness of the sick woman who was closing her life as the splendid Courtesan was emphasized by using colors of white and light purple and thin transparent materials.

미야자키 하야오 애니메이션에 나타난 히로인의 성격구조 (Personality Structures of Heroines in Miyazaki Hayao Animations)

  • 미야자키 하야오 애니메이션의 주요한 특징 중 하나는 연민과 자비로움을 갖춘 동시에 확고한 신념을 가진 히로인이 등장한다는 것이다. 본 연구는 그가 원작하고, 각본과 감독을 담당한 극장용 장편 애니메이션 중 히로인이 등장하는 <바람계곡의 나우시카>, <천공의 성 라퓨타>, <원령공주>, <센과 치히로의 행방불명>을 대상으로 성격구조의 공통점과 차이점을 연구하고자 했다. 성격유형을 분석하기 위해 MBTI, 에니어그램의 분류기준을 토대로 하고, 캐릭터의 역할에 따른 유기적 관계, 외적인 특성들을 종합하여 성격구조를 분석하였다. 연구를 통하여, 미야자키의 히로인들은 공통적으로 구원자이며 이상주의자이지만, 행동의 동기가 달라짐으로써 개성적 성격구조로 창조되었음을 유추할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 미야자키 하야오가 창조한 히로인들의 성격구조 특성을 정의하고 데이터화 하였다.

대입 재수생 및 편입준비생의 약물남용 실태와 이에 영향을 미치는 요인 (A Study on Drug Abuse and the Factors Affecting Drug Abuse Behaviors of Students Preparing College Entrance or Transfer Examinations)

  • A study on drug abuse of young people who failed in college entrance examinations and preparing the next examination and those enrolled at colleges but trying to transfer to other colleges was conducted from February 3 to May 31, 1999 in order to determine current drug abuse status of them and factors affecting their behavior related to drug abuse. A total of 1,771 people were selected from college entrance preparation institutes in Seoul, Pusan, Taegu, Taejon and Kwangju and interviewed by using questionnaires. The results are summarized as follows; 1. 49.78% of them experienced drinking, 22.8% smoking, and 6.7% drug previously. More males smoked cigarettes than females. The young in the age group of 25 to 29 years old, and the young living in small towns, and subjects who finished junior colleges and those without religions drank more than those in other categories. The subjects in the age group of 20 to 24 years old and those with one parent, and those living in small towns used more drugs than those in other categories. 2. 60.1% of those with drug using experience used the drug in their or friends' homes. 53.6% of them used drugs with their friends, junior or senior classmates. 36.6% of them purchased drugs from drug stores. 76.0% of them spent their pocket money for buying drugs. 3. The drugs (excluding alcohol and tobacco) they used were bond and butane gas (29.6%), stimulants (20.6%), marijuana 02.0%) LSD (4.8%), cocaine, heroine and opium (4.2%), and others (28.8%). 4. 21.5% of those with drug using experience had detoxification treatment previously. The ajmor sufferings they experienced were distraction (42.6%), fear 01.7%), and others. 5. 51.0% of the subjects experienced drug related health education in schools, and 14.6% had that kind of education through social program. 6. 64.3% of the subjects got information about drug abuse through mass media, 16.4% through printed materials, and 11.4% through public health professionals. 7. The knowledge level of drug abuse was 16.48:1:2.76 points out of 24 (68.6 points out of 100).

행위소 모형을 통한 문학의 게임시나리오 변용 양상 분석 - 「햄릿」과 「마비노기」를 중심으로 (An Analysis of Game Scenario Variations in Literature Using Actant Model - Focused on "Hamlet" and "Mabinogi")

  • 문학작품은 연극, 영화, 만화, 게임을 비롯한 다양한 문화 콘텐츠의 소재로 활용되고 있다. 원천자료에서 추출된 요소를 활용하여 게임 스토리텔링을 진행하여도 개연성과 보편성이 확보된 게임 스토리 창작이 가능하다는 기존 연구 결과에 따라, 앞으로 문학작품이 변용된 콘텐츠들의 분석에 대한 활용이 확대될 것으로 기대되어 문학작품이 변용된 콘텐츠들의 분석이 필요할 것으로 보고 원전의 변용양상을 분석하고자 한다. 본 논문에서는 국내 온라인 게임 중 문학작품을 활용한 "마비노기"의 시나리오를 그레마스의 행위소 모형을 이용하여 분석하였다. 분석된 결과는 원천 소스인"햄릿"과 비교하여 구조, 시대, 배경, 주인공, 목표, 주제를 분석하였다. 이를 통해 문학을 콘텐츠화할 때 서사 변화를 확인하였으며, 해당 분석은 문학작품을 기반으로 한 게임 시나리오의 변용양상을 분석한 데에 의의가 있다. 이후 문학작품의 다양한 소재들을 다양하게 녹여낸 스토리텔링 방법을 연구하는데 기여할 것으로 기대한다.
