Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Oriental medical treatment in patients with Spondylolisthesis and lumbar Herniated Intervertebral Disc(HIVD). Methods : This clinical study was carried out on 39 patients with Spondylolisthesis and lumbar Herniated Intervertebral Disc(HIVD), who had been admitted from Jan. 2012 to Nov. 2012. All of 39 patients were treated with acupuncture, Chuna treatment and herbal medicine during the whole admission period. Verbal numerical rating scale(VNRS) and Oswestry disability index(ODI) were used to evaluated the effectiveness of the Oriental medical treatment. Results : 1. Significant improvement of the symptoms of low back pain and leg pain on 39 patients with Spondylolisthesis and lumbar Herniated Intervertebral Disc(HIVD) was seen when evaluated with VNRS and ODI. 2. There was no significant difference of improvement by herniated type when evaluated with VNRS and ODI.. 3. There was no significant difference of improvement by spondylolisthesis type(degenerative and spondylolytic) when evaluated with VNRS and ODI. Conclusions : These results suggest that in the case of low back pain and lower limb numbness caused by Spondylolisthesis and HIVD, conservative treatments can be considered as one of the options of treating the symptoms beside surgical way.

Objectives: The propose of this study is to find out the clinical application of conservative treatment to 3 patients who has Disc Extrusion on L-spine MRI Methods: We examined 3 patients with Lumbar Intervertebral Disc Herniation (HIVD of L-spine) with Disc Extrusion who showed changes on MRI images before/after the treatment among HIVD of L-spine patients who visited Jaseng Hospital of Oriental Medicine. Results: In this study, the first MRI examination of HIVD of L-spine patients was performed at the first visit and re-examination of MRI was done after the treatment. In each case, the size of the extruded disc was considerably reduced in MRI image. Low back and leg pain was also reduced significantly after conervative oriental medical treatment. Conclusions: Conservative oriental medical treatment can be effective for improving symptoms of HIVD, decreasing pain, also decreasing the volume of herniated disc.

Objectives : The object is to study a clinical effect regarding the conservative treatment of the patient who was diagnosed as the herniated Intervertebral lumbar disc(HIVD) and hospitalized in the oriental medical hospital and clinical study about the type of the HIVD. Methods. The clinical studies were done on 65 cases (hospitalized in Dept. of Oriental Rehabilitation Medicine, jaseng on oriental medical hospital from June 2001 to May 2002) who complained of low back pain or sciatica and diagnosed as HIVD on CT(computerized tomography) or MRI(magnetic resonance imaging). They were given both oriental conservative treatment and exercise during the hospitalization period. We investigated and observed 20 items about sex, age, weight, height, occupation, smoking. obesity, duration of disease, clinical symptom and treatment duration in basis of medical recording which was drawn up at patient hospitalization. We classified HIVD with 4 types(Bulging. Protruded. Extruded, Sequestered) and decided the case which simultaneously had 2 overs with Mixed type. The treatment evaluation standard was classified with 4 branches; Excellent. Good, Fair and Poor. Results & Conclusions : The treatment result of over 'fair' is bulging type 85%, protruded type 92.7%, extruded type 100% and the mixed type was 85.1 %. The effect was good in order of bulging, mixed, protruded and extruded type. It appeared most plentifully with 30 people in L4-5 and L5-S 1 disc herniation type.

Objective : The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of ShinBaro Pharmacopuncture in the treatment of patients with Lumbar spine Herniated Nucleus Pulposus. Methods : We investigated 20 cases of patients with lumbar disc herniation and devided into two groups. Experimental group were treated with ShinBaro Pharmacopuncture with integrated package treatment and control group were treated the same therapies without ShinBaro Pharmacopuncture. To evaluate the treatment effects of two groups, we used numeric rating scale(NRS), oswestry disability index(ODI). Results : In NRS of lumbar and sciatica pain and ODI, that of experimental group was much more improved than control group, and decrement of NRS of lumbar pain showed statistical significance along with the duration of treatment. Conclusions : ShinBaro Pharmacopuncture was thought to be effective for relieving symptoms of lumbar spine herniated nucleus pulposus, although further study is needed.

Objectives : To verify Korean Medicinal Combination Treatments for patients who have Failed Back Surgery Syndrome along with scoliosis Methods : We used Acupuncture, Chuna manual therapy, Pharmacoacupuncture, Herbal medication. We measured Numeral Rating Sacle(NRS), Pain-Free walking distance(PFWD) and Oswestry Disability Index(ODI) score to evaluate the treatment effects. Results : Patients' LBP & Rt.leg pain NRS, PFWD and ODI score were improved. Conclusions : Traditional Korean medicine can be effective for FBSS patients along with scoliosis.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report clinical effect of oriental meical for a not improved foot drop patient after herniated intervertebral lumbar disc surgery. Methods : The patient was treated using acupuncture, electroacupuncture, phamacopuncture treatment, herbal medication, moxibustion and physical treatment. And we measured of VAS, ROM of ankle and MMT. Results : After treatment, VAS, ROM of ankle and MMT were improved in case. Conclusions : Oriental medical treatment showed significant effect on patient that not improved foot drop after herniated intervertebral lumbar disc surgery.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report clinical effects of oriental medical treatments with acupuncture treatment on peroneus longus muscle for two patients with foot drop by Herniated Intervertebral Lumbar Disc(HIVD). Method : The patients were diagnosed as HIVD, and were treated by oriental medical treatments including acupuncture treatment on peroneus longus muscle. And we measured Visual Analogue Scale(VAS), Range of Motion (ROM) of ankle joint, Manual Muscle testing(MMT) and checked the subject power of ankle joint. Result : After acupuncture treatment on peroneus longus muscle, the movement and power of ankle joint were improved in two cases. Conclusion : Acupuncture treatment on peroneus longus muscle showed significant effect on two patients with foot drop patients by HIVD.

Objectives : This case report describes the management of five patients suffering from nonstructural scoliosis with lumbar herniated intervertebral disc all treated with complex Korean medicine treatment. Methods : Five patients were hospitalized and treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, cupping, and Chuna manual therapy. Patients were assessed for Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), EuroQol-FiveDimensions (EQ-5D), and Cobb's angle. Results : In all patients, NRS, ODI, and Cobb's angle decreased, while the EQ-5D score increased. Conclusions : As seen in these five cases, complex Korean medicine treatment with Chuna manual therapy has effects on the management of nonstructural scoliosis.

Objectives : Herniated lumbar intervertebral disc (HIVD) is one of the cause of low back pain and radiculopathy. To evaluate the efficiency of simultaneous administration of herb medicine and non-steroid-anti-inflamatory drugs (NSAIDs), we investigated 48 HIVD patients confirmed by CT or MRI and treated with acupuncture, bed rest, herb medicine, physical therapy and NSAIDs. Methods : The patients were divided into four groups as follows : The A group were 11 cases treated with only herb medicine A. The A+W group were 14 cases treated with herb medicine A and NSAIDs. The B group were 11 cases treated with herb medicine B. The B+W group were 12 cases treated with herb medicine Band NSAIDs. We evaluated the pain degree by visual analog scale (VAS). Results : The mean VAS was reduced to $4.89{\pm}2.62$ after 2 weeks therapy and pain decrease was the most prominent in the group having within a week duration ($3.25{\pm}2.49$). Pain scale was decreased to $4.57{\pm}2.95$ in A+W group, $4.91{\pm}1.97$ in A group, $4.72{\pm}2.68$ in B group, and $5.41{\pm}2.67$ in B+W group after 2 weeks therapy. Conclusions : These results indicate that oriental medical theraphy is useful enough to treat the HIVD patients and herb medicine decrease the pain of the HIVD effectively. Therefore, the more research about herb medicine for pain killing drugs should be done.

Objectives : The aim of present study is to estimate clinical outcome of Chuna treatment and Chuna medicine treatment for patients with H.I.V.D(Herniated Intervertebral Disc) of lumbar spine according to the character of patients and the steps of Chuna therapy, and therefore suggest a prospective, desirable Chuna treatment and patient guidance. Methods : We investigated the 258 cases of outpatients who were diagnosed as the H.I.V.D. on lumbar C.T. or MRI and were treated more than seven times with chuna treatment and more than one time with Chuna medicine treatment In Jaseng Oriental Medicine Hospital from September 1, 1999 to December 31, 2000. We evaluated the subjective symptoms by Hudgin's classification. For the sake of the more objective evaluation for before and after treatment, we calculated the Improvement index and ratio of the four parts to estimate the pain and functional disorder In before and after treatment by Macnab's criteria. Results & Conclusion : The improvement index and ratio showed that the conservative therapy with Chuna therapy improved the symptom of H.I.V.D. much effectively, and especially in the patient groups of male, 30-39 years, standing Job, duration of symptom within one week, the 4th step of chuna treatment, the first step of chuna medicine treatment, and the excellent satisfactory assessment of Chuna treatment. Therefore, it is supposed that the conservative therapy with Chuna therapy and patient guidance should be much actively continued.
