  • To select herbicide for sesame under vinyl mulching, growth and yield of sesame and effects of weed control were investigated in various herbicides treatment with standard alachlor. Even if alachlor showed high effects in weed control, it coused phytotoxicity under vinyl mulching. But napropamid 150g ai. per 10a was not only highly effective for weed control but also stable in herbicide injury. Therefore, napropamid-treated plots showed remarkably flourishing growth and high yield compared with alachlor 66g ai. per 10a.

Optimum Application Level of Dicamba Heribicide for Control of Abutilon avicennae in Silage Corn Field (사일리지용 옥수수 포장에서 어저귀 (Abutilon avicennae) 방제를 위한 Dicamba 액제 적정 시용수준 구명)

  • A field experiment was carried out to determine the optimum application level of dicamba herbicide for efficient control of Abutilon avicennae in silage corn field. Five treatments of application levels (0 ; control, $0.75{\ell},\;1.0{\ell},\;1.25{\ell}\;and\;1.5{\ell}$) were arranged at National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon in 1995 and 1996. The hybrid silage corn was P 3352 and dicamba herbicide was applied at 5~6 leaf stage of corn. The growth of corn was poor in control plot, and the days for tasseling and silking were delayed 2~3 days when compared with the plots of herbicide application. The control efficiency of Abutilon avicennae was excellent as 94.7~98.1% in the plots of dicamba application. A slight injury of herbicide was observed at early stage of corn when applied at $1.0{\ell},\;1.25{\ell}\;and\;1.5{\ell}$ of dicamba per ha. Forage dry matter(DM) yield, length and weight of ear in the plots of dicamba treatments were significantly higher than those of control. The DM yield of control(12,070kg/ha) was only 64.2~66.9% of dicamba treatment plot(18,050~18,795kg/ha). However, there was no yield difference among dicamba application level. The percentage of ear to total DM yield was ranged from 53.4 to 56.8%. The nutritive value(crude protein, ADF, NDF, digestibility and TDN) was very similar among all treatments. From the above results, it is recommended that optimum application level of dicamba herbicide was $0.75{\sim}1.0{\ell}/ha$ for efficient control of Abutilon avicennae and for silage corn production without herbicide injury.

Weeding Efficacy and Phytotoxicity Evaluation of Soil-Applied Herbicides for Potential Use in Sorghum (수수 재배시 적용 제초제 선발을 위한 약효 및 약해 평가)

  • Herbicide options for weed control in sorghum is very limited, hence there is a need for exploring potential herbicides. Sorghum herbicide tolerance field trails were conducted at two locations, Yaechoun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do, in 2013. Tolerance of sorghum was evaluated following the pre-emergence application of methabenzthiazuron 70% (WP), simazine 50% (WP), oxadiargyl 1.7% (EC), and dimethenamid-P 5% + pendimethalin 20% (EC) at the standard rate 157.5 g, 75 g, 5.1 g, and 75 g a.i. $10a^{-1}$, respectively. As well as double the standard rate. On a phytotoxicity scale of 0 to 9, methabenzthiazuron (WP) induced injury to sorghum up to level 1 at the standard rate and to 3 at double the rate, but did not significantly affect the yield any statistical difference from the untreated. Simazine (WP) induced phytotoxicity up to levels 2 and 4 at single and double rates, respectively. Simazine (WP) did not significantly affect yield: however, the values were numerically lower than those in the methabenzthiazuron (WP) treatment. Oxidiargyl (EC) and dimethenamid + pendimethalin (EC) induced no or slight phytotoxicity; however they failed to provide effective weed control at the standard rate (32 and 68% control, respectively). Out of the tested, methabenzthiazuron (WP) was found to have potential for use in sorghum whereas the other herbicides caused unacceptable levels of injury.

  • Residual period and carry-over effect of some herbicides were determined using a bioassay method in five winter crops (chinese cabbage, radish, spinach, onion and garlic). The effects were measured at regular time intervals after applling different rates of the herbicides. There were no great differences in residual period and carry-over injury between the soils and kinds of crops used. However, the residual period varied with the herbicides studied and the carry-over injury was rate of the herbicide application, sampling depth of soil, and kind and seeding date of the test plant. When the residual herbicides were applied, the carry-over injury could be minimized by selecting tolerant crops, delaying seeding of the crops after application of the herbicides, and regulating the cultivation depth. Herbicides which showed no residual effect by the end of the cropping period (200-240 days for winter crops) and no carry-over effect were alachlor, trifluralin, ethalfluralin and prometryn. When pendimethalin, metolachlor, linuron and methabenthiazuron were applied at the recommended rate or less, there was no carry-over injury at harvesting time. With doubling the recommended rate, however, the carry-over effect was found in sensitive crops. Napropamide applied in winter crops at rate of 150-300g a.i./10a brought about carry-over injury for such Gramineae as Italian ryegrass, direct-seeded rice and barley, whereas the injury was not found in lowland-transplanted rice, Cruciferae, Cucurbitaceae and Solanaceae. Long residual herbicide nitralin applied at the rate of 75g a.i./10a caused the carry-over injury for Italian ryegrass, direct-seeded rice, baley and lowland-transplanted rice at 275 days in winter crops. In addition, a slight injury occurred in sesame, perilla and spinach, However, there was no injury for Cruciferae, Cucurbitaceae and Solanaceae.

  • Field study was conducted to evaluate safening effect of fenclorim (4,6-dichloro-2-phenyl pyrimidine) against benthiocarb, butachlor, and pretilachlor injury in rice plants under vinyl-covered subirrigated seedbed. Combinated application of benthiocarb 210, and 315 g ai/10a with fenclorim 10 g ai/10a or higher concentration, butachlor 180, and 270 g ai/10a with fenclorim 20 g ai/10a or higher concentration, and pretilachlor 60, and 90 g ai/10a with fenclorim 30 g ai/10a reduced herbicide injury of rice, and thus increased standing, plant height, tillers, and dry weight of rice plants compared to no combined application of fenclorim.

  • Response of rice varieties Tongil, Jinheung and IR 24 to four preemergence herbicides was determined. Saturn-s [s-(4-chlorobenzyl)-N, N-diethylthiol carbamate plus 2-methylthiol-4, 6-bisethylamino-2-triazine] caused severe injury to Tongil at the high temperature and less at the higher water level, but slight injury to Jinheung and IR 24. The difference may be explained by the shallower root system of Tongil, allowing more contact with the herbicide, or different varietal metabolic rates.

  • The following experiments were used to evaluate the effect of seeding method and pre-emergence herbicides on weed control and the production of the $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ [sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] hybrid under field and in vitro conditions. Under the in vitro condition, we evaluated how different kinds of herbicides affect the rate of seed germination and the growth of early seedlings in the $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrid treated with herbicides. Simazine, alachlor, and methabenzthiazuron were used, and their concentration levels were 0%, 40%, 70%, and 100%. The germination ratio of the seeds was reduced by the application of simazine, methabenzthiazuron, and alachlor compared with the control (distilled water). The alachlor application severely decreased the sorghum germination ratio. However, seed germination was not greatly influenced by the concentration level of the herbicides. Root and shoot length were increased in the following order: control > simazine > methabenzthiazuron > alachlor. Overall, alachlor significantly reduced root length more than shoot length. The differential tolerance of the $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrid to pre-emergence herbicides by seeding method was then tested under the field condition. The plants were severely injured by the alachlor application, leading to a great reduction in the number of stems. However, for the simazine and methabenzthiazuron applications the number of stems lost was slightly lower than it was for the alachlor and simazine + alachlor applications. In the seeding method, drilling was more effective in reducing herbicide injury than broadcasting. All of the herbicides effectively controlled weeds. The simazine and methabenzthiazuron applications showed a significantly higher dry matter (DM) yield. However, the alachlor and simazine + alachlor applications severely reduced the DM yield. This result suggests that the alachlor application has a significant effect on plant production. Similarly, the total digestible nutrient (TDN) yield was greatly reduced by the alachlor and simazine + alachlor applications. From the results presented above, we concluded that the yield of DM was the highest for broadcasting with no herbicide. and drilling was the most-effective way to reduce herbicide injury. The simazine application was the most-effective herbicide, showing the highest forage yield and TDN yield.

Specificity in Weed Competition and Herbicide Response of Soybean under Foggy Condition (인공안개처리에 따른 콩의 잡초경합 양상 및 제초제반응 특이성)

  • Greenhouse experiment was carried out to investigate the specifics in growth, weed competition, and herbicide response of soybean(Glycine max) under foggy condition. Plant height and leaf stage of soybean under foggy condition were greatly increased through all growing stage comparing with non-foggy condition. At 100 days after seeding, plant height of soybean also was increased by 14% while number of pods, number of grains per pod were reduced by 16, 24 and 23%, respectively comparing with non-foggy condition. On the other hand, plant height of soybean under foggy condition was reduced with increasing the duration of competition and this tendency was similar to non-foggy condition. Plant height was reduced by above 50-day competition. Number of pods per plant of soybean was reduced regardless of foggy condition. Among the herbicides treated, quizalofop caused slightly crop injury under foggy condition, but the other herbicides did not affect growth of soybean. Number of pods and 100-grain weight of soybean by treatment of herbicides were similar to that of the untreated control but those of soybean under foggy condition were significantly reduced. At 40 days after herbicide application, weeding efficacy (based on shoot fresh weight) of herbicides treated under foggy and non-foggy condition, released exellent data(above than 97%) in all regardless foggy condition.

Effect of CGA 123'407 on Reducing Injury of Rice Plants to Pretilachlor, Butachlor and Benthiocarb (CGA 123'407 처리(處理)가 벼에서 Pretilachlor, Butachlor 및 Benthiocarb의 약해경감(藥害輕減)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate safening effect of CGA 123'407 (4,6-dichloro-2-phenyl-pyrimidine) against pretilachlor, butachlor, and benthiocarb in rice plants. Butachlor and benthiocarb at 50 ppm or higher concentrations significantly inhibited rice growth and pretilachlor gradually inhibited growth of rice plants with increase in concentration starting from 0.5 ppm. CGA 123'407 at 0.1 ppm or higher concentrations was effective in reducing injury of rice plants when butachlor and benthiocarb were applied at rate of 10 ppm. Rice injury from pretilachlor at 10 ppm was also reduced by addition of CGA 123'407 at 0.25 ppm or higher concentrations Herbicidal activity of pretilachlor, butachlor, and benthiocarb was not affected by mixture treatments of CGA 123'407.

  • Novel series of 5-benzyloxymethyl-3-(thiophen-5-yl)-1,2-isoxazoline derivatives were designed and synthesized, and their herbicidal activities to diverse weeds were tested under flooded paddy conditions in a greenhouse. Among them, some compounds (3d-f) showed good activities to dominant weeds such as Echinocloa orizycola and Monochoria vaginalis presl. at a rate of 0.063 kg/ha without the serious injury toward rice.
