Objectives : In this paper, We pointed out medico-historical meaning of Hyang'yak Kugŭppang (鄕藥救急方, Medical Recipes of Local Botanicals for Emergency Use), a medical book of Koryŏ Dynasty, breaking from the existing analysis view based on Hyang'yak (鄕藥), local herbs produced in Korean Peninsula. Methods : For that purpose, we analyzed the clinical characteristics of the diseases and symptoms, strategies of treatment, therapeutic tools, drug formulations, composition of herbal formulas in Hyang'yak Kugŭppang. Results : The following characteristics were confirmed in Hyang'yak Kugŭppang. First, it contained a way to cope with the diseases and symptoms that do not have to check the exterior, interior, cold, and heat. Also, it introduced basic strategies such as reducing, facilitating flow, draining downward, warming, or tonifying, etc. It mainly included herbal medicine as the therapeutic tools, and introduced formulas composed by single herb than complex recipes. It suggested external applications more than internal use, and proposed formulations in the form of decoctions or powders, etc. The herbs of formulas were used by experience without explanations of nature & taste, efficacy of each herbs. Conclusions : Hyang'yak Kugŭppang is a book of medical recipes for emergency use that has been distributed to help gentries, even if they do not have professional medical knowledge, to instantly cope with diseases and symptoms with medicines that are easy to obtain. Previous researches has analyzed the value of Hyang'yak Kugŭppang as a collection of information of hyang'yak, and used it as a historical basis of the uniqueness of Korean medicine. Since Hyang'yak Kugŭppang is not a book specialized for herbs, but rather a clinical medical book that introduces recipes for specific symptoms of diseases, if we pay attention to the clinical characteristics of Hyang'yak Kugŭppang, it will provide an opportunity to describe Koryŏ or Korean medicine in a new way.

The purpose of this study is to report the effect in treating a patient with delayed union of 4th toe distal phalanx fracture with a combination of Korean Medicine treatment. We treated the patient with acupuncture, cupping, pharmacopuncture, moxibustion and herbal medicine, from March 3, 2018 to June 25, 2018 (total 33 times). The numeric rating scale (NRS), X-ray were applied as outcome measures. After complex Korean medicine treatment was carried out, delayed union of 4th toe distal phalanx fracture was improved and pain was reduced. This result shows that Korean medicine treatment may be an effective option for delayed union. Further clinical studies are needed to clarify the effect of Korean medicine treatment on delayed union.

This case study reports the effects of complex Korean medicine treatment, including Nangan-jeon, on Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) accompanied by chronic constipation and abdominal pain as the main symptoms. A 39-year-old woman diagnosed with LEMS with major symptoms, including chronic constipation and acute abdominal pain, received Western treatment. The treatment efficacy was weak and symptoms recurred, so the patient received outpatient treatment and 13 days of hospitalization for active Korean medicine treatment, including Nangan-jeon. During outpatient treatment and hospitalization, defecation frequency and the numeric rating scale (NRS) for abdominal pain and abdominal cold feeling were measured. The NRS for abdominal pain and cold decreased from 8 at admission to 3 and 0, respectively, at discharge. Defecation frequency increased significantly from once or twice a month to once every 2-3 days during hospitalization. This study results that complex Korean medicine treatment, including Nangan-jeon may be useful for treating patients who mainly complain of autonomic neurological symptoms, among patients diagnosed with LEMS. In addition, it is believed that it could be basic data applicable to more LEMS patient treatment cases.

Objective: This study reports the effectiveness of the Korean medicine treatment of patients with intracerebral and intraventricular hemorrhages suffering unilateral neglect symptoms. Case presentation: The patient was treated using Korean medicine, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, moxibustion, and a limb activation exercise. We measured Unilateral Neglect Symptom progress with a numeric rating scale, Albert's test, Line bisection test, Clock drawing test, and Catherine Bergego Scale. After eight days of combined Korean medicine and rehabilitation exercise, the Unilateral Neglect Symptom intensity reduced from NRS 8 to 6. In addition, Albert's test score decreased from 2.5% to 0%. The Line bisection test score decreased from 19 mm to 12 mm, and the Clock drawing test score improved from 8 to 10. Last, the Catherine Bergego Scale decreased from 12 to 9. No adverse events were observed during treatment. Conclusion: This study suggested that a complex treatment including Jaeumkunbi-tang, acupuncture, moxibustion, and limb activation exercise can be effective for an intracerebral hemorrhage with intraventricular hemorrhage patient suffering from Unilateral Neglect Symptoms. Consequently, more research is needed in the future.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the trend in the research on alcoholic liver disease (ALD) using Korean traditional medicine. Methods: This review was conducted using six electronic databases (NDSL, KMBASE, Koreantk, KISS, KISTI, and KoreaMed) with no restrictions in year. The search terms were "alcoholic liver disease", "alcoholic fatty liver", "alcoholic hepatitis", "alcoholic cirrhosis", "herbal medicine", "acupuncture" and "traditional medicine". The searched studies were analyzed according to the type of research. Results: After screening, 37 studies were selected among 552. The types of studies were as follows: 8 in vivo studies, 17 case reports, 7 case series, 1 assessment scale study, 1 randomized controlled trial, and 3 research reviews. The in vivo studies reported the efficacy and its mechanism in the animal phase of single or complex herbal medicine. In the clinical research, interventions such as herbal medicine and acupuncture were most commonly used for ALD treatment. Conclusions: We analyzed the trends in ALD treatment using Korean traditional medicine through this review. The results showed that Korean traditional medicine could be an effective method for ALD treatment. Conducting related in-depth studies, such as well-designed randomized controlled trial based on the results of experimental research, is necessary.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effects of oriental medical treatment on Extensive limb swelling which is rare adverse reaction of vaccination. Methods A 11 months old infant who appealed unilateral thigh swelling after immunization and signs of local inflammation was administered a complex herbal medicine consisting of five decoctions; Gwakhyangjunggisan, Binsosan, Danggwisusan, Samchulgunbitang and Gwibitang. The length of the constant regions of the thigh circumference was measured every visit. Each process was recorded by photograph. After one year from the first visit, phone call was conducted to follow-up. Results The length of the thigh after administration of herbal medicine did not change much, but the part where swelled hard became little bit softer. A year later, patient's growth and walking was normal but the swollen part not changed. Since then the similar adverse effects did not recur on booster doses vaccines. Conclusions The adverse reactions of vaccination are rarely reported and there is no specific treatment for swelling from Hepatitis B vaccine. It will be more helpful to study if more cases reported about any adverse drug reactions or any side effects from the immunization.

Objectives : To report the R/O CRPS patient after Korean medicine treatment, suffering severe buring pain and insomnia. Methods : The patient was a 56-year-old female patient and treated with herbal medicines and acupuncture in 32 days. The treatment effect was evaluated by measuring VNRS of pain, sleeping time and change in mood status. Results : The Korean Medical therapy had good effect on the patient. Especially, relaxing mental treatment is effective in improving and maintaining symptoms. Conclusions : The Korean medical treatments appeared to be effective in reducing R/O CRPS symptoms. Further clinical research of patients with CRPS is needed.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to find clinical approachment of rheumatoid arthritis with herbal medicine Byeong-geo-tang(竝祛湯 ; bing qu tang) Methods: We provided acupuncture, bee venom aqua - acupuncture, Byeong-geo-tang(竝祛湯 ; bing qu tang) on a patient of rheumatoid arthritis. Symptoms were estimated with the visual analog scale. Results: Patients chief complaints were pain and ankylosis of her right fingers and left toes and pain of her both wrists. Symptoms were relieved from 7 to 0 VAS after treatment. Conclusions: We observed that complex therapy of acupuncture, bee venom aqua - acupuncture, Byeong-geo-tang(竝祛湯 ; bing qu tang) redused symptoms of the patient. We expect this clinical report may be helpful to rheumatoid arthritis treatment.

A diabetic neuropathy patient was treated with Korean medicine for 2 weeks. In this case report, we report the efficacy of a complex treatment comprising various Korean medicine methods by evaluating the differences in pain scores. The patient reported improvement in both pain score and glucose index. Korean medicine could therefore be effective for the treatment and prevention of diabetic neuropathy.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the Korean medicine treatment on whole-body nummular eczema. Methods : This case study was conducted with a 66-year-old female patient who has whole-body nummular eczema treated by Korean medicine. She was treated from 2021.3.30 to 2021.6.28. During the treatment, the two herbal medicines were changed depending on the patient's condition. We treated her with herbal medicine, herbal external preparations and acupuncture treatment. For the evaluation of the results, we used photo comparison, VAS, and DLQI. Results : After the treatment, the nummular eczema lesions of patient was remarkably improved. Also, the VAS grade of other symptoms such as pruritus, burning sense, oozing, crusting and erythema were decreased and DLQI score changed from 27 to 2. Conculsions : This study suggests that Korean medicine treatments are effective for patient with recurrent nummular eczema.
