  • In this study, Batch Test was carried out on the adsorption abilities to heavy metal of FWC, which occurred during the carbonization process was part of recycling methods of food waste. The heavy metals used in the experiment were lead and cadmium; mixing its solution with carbonized ratio of 50:1, respectively. The different concentrations were applied with 50, 100, 200, 400, and $800\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. When, the initial concentration is less than 200mg/l, there has been a high removal ratio of 20% to 50%. Comparing the test results on Lanmmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms, the Freundilich adsorption isotherm was well compatible.

  • This study examined the removal rate of mixed heavy metals from aqueous solution using recycled aggregate. The recycled aggregate is favorable for the absorbent because it contains about 95% (CaO, $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$), which are major ingredient of adsorbent for heavy metal. The kinetic data presented that the slow course of adsorption follows the Pseudo first and second order models. The equilibrium data were well fitted by the Langmuir model and showed the affinity order: $Cu^{2+}$ > $Pb^{2+}$ > $$Zn^{2+}{\simeq_-}Ni^{2+}$$ > $Cd^{2+}$. The results also showed that adsorption rate slightly increased with increasing pH from 6 to 10. Moreover, this trend is similar to results obtained as function of loading amount of recycled aggregate. Meanwhile, an unit adsorption rate was slightly decreased. From these results, it was concluded that the absorbents can be successfully used the removal of the heavy metals from the aqueous solutions.

  • The contamination of the environment by heavy metals results in a serious public health problem due to the toxicity of those pollutants even at low concentrations. Microorganisms may be used to remediate wastewaters contamlialtd with heavy metals. The waste S. cerevisiae is an inexpensive readily available source of biomass for bioremediation of wastewater. S. cerevisiae was investigated for their ability to absorb Pb. The crushed biomass of S. cerevisiae exhibited higher Pb uptake capacity than the living S. cerevisiae and the sterilized S. cerevisiae. At the same metal concentration, metal uptake per unit concentration or adsorbent decreased when the biomass concentration rises. The order of the biosorption capacity of the living S. cerevisiae was Pb>Cu>Cd=Co>Cr. When S. cerevisiae was pretreated with 0.1 M NaOH, Pb uptake was increased by 150 percent and 0.1 M HC1, 0.1 M $H_2S_O4$ solutions were efficient in the desorption of Pb. The sorption equilibrium of Pb ions can be described by the Freundlich and Langmuir models.

  • In this study, an accelerated carbonation process was applied to stabilize hazardous heavy metals of industrial solid waste incineration (ISWI) bottom ash and fly ash, and to reduce $CO_2$ emissions. The most commonly used method to stabilize heavy metals is accelerated carbonation using a high water-to-solid ratio including oxidation and carbonation reactions as well as neutralization of the pH, dissolution, and precipitation and sorption. This process has been recognized as having a significant effect on the leaching of heavy metals in alkaline materials such as ISWI ash. The accelerated carbonation process with $CO_2$ absorption was investigated to confirm the leaching behavior of heavy metals contained in ISWI ash including fly and bottom ash. Only the temperature of the chamber at atmospheric pressure was varied and the $CO_2$ concentration was kept constant at 99% while the water-to-solid ratio (L/S) was set at 0.3 and $3.0dm^3/kg$. In the result, the concentration of leached heavy metals and pH value decreased with increasing carbonation reaction time whereas the bottom ash showed no effect. The mechanism of heavy metal-stabilization is supported by two findings during the carbonation reaction. First, the carbonation reaction is sufficient to decrease the pH and to form an insoluble heavy metal-material that contributes to a reduction of the leaching. Second, the adsorbent compound in the bottom ash controls the leaching of heavy metals; the calcite formed by the carbonation reaction has high affinity of heavy metals. In addition, approximately 5 kg/ton and 27 kg/ton $CO_2$ were sequestrated in ISWI bottom ash and fly ash after the carbonation reaction, respectively.

  • This study of adsorption and column percolation was conducted to examine the utilization of natural zeolite for the removal of heavy metals from waste water to compare with that of absorption activated carbon. The adsorption of heavy metals by natural zeolite was conformed to the Freundlich isotherm (1/n values: $0.12{\sim}0.45$, K values: $18.77{\sim}59.48$) and natural zeolite was turned out to be an effective adsorbent of heavy metals. At the same particle size and percolation velocity, zeolite adsorbed a greater amount of heavy metals was adsorbed on natural zeolite than activated carbon. The smaller the particle size, the more heavy metals that were adsorbed. It was postulated that the most effective size as an adsorbent of heavy metals from waste water ranged from 0.5 to 2.0mm. The slower the percolation velocity that of the heavy metal solution in column, the more heavy metals were adsorbed. Natural zeolite in a single solution adsorbed more heavy metals than that in mixed solution, and the order of the adsorption amount on natural zeolite was Cu>Zn>Cd.

  • Graft copolymers were synthesized from methylcellulose(MC) and acrylic acid(AA) with active carboxyl groups in the presence of potassium persulfate($K_2S_2O_8$) initiator to enhance adsorption capacity of toxic heavy metal such as $Pb^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ from wastewater. The resulting grafted copolymers(MC-g-AA/PAA) were mixture of the graft copolymers from MC and AA(MC-g-AA) and polyacrylic acid homopolymers(PAA). The degree of palling was increased with rising concentration of monomer and initiator under the reaction conditions at $60^{\circ}C$, 3 hrs. The water insoluble property of MC-g-AA showed more than 19.7% degree of grafting. So that it could be an adsorbent of heavy metals. Adsorption characteristics of the MC-g-AA were evaluated depending on the degree of grading, pH of wastewater, adsorption time, dosage of MC-g-AA and concentration of heavy metals in the different conditions. Degree of grafting, and initial concentration of heavy metal ions increased, the adsorption amount of $Pb^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ increased, but added MC-g-AA increased, the adsorption amount per unit weight of $Pb^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ decreased. The MC-g-AA showed the high $Pb^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ adsorption amount in the range pH $4{\sim}6$. Also all of $Pb^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ ions reached in adsorption equilibrium in neighborhood 4 hours. The adsorption of heavy metals described by Freundlich isotherm, it was determined the value of l/n of $Pb^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ that 0.4294 and 0.3453, respectively.

  • Brown algae, Sargassum horneri, was used as an adsorbent to remove heavy metal Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions. Sargassum horneri picked in East Coast was formulated into the grain with the size of 40-60 mesh after wind dry. Batch method was used in order to investigate the adsorption rate by measuring the adsorption amounts with shaking time. In the column method, the adsorption amounts were measured by flowing metal solutions into the algae-packed column at the rate of 1 ml/min. Adsorption amounts in both batch method and column method were in the following order : pH 10.5>7.0>3.5. It was found that Pb(II) was more adsorbed on the algae grain than Cd(II). It was also revealed that the adsorption amounts reached the maximum within 5 minutes irrespective of pH condition in the batch method. It was concluded that the batch method was more effective than the column method in terms of recovery rate.

  • In this work, α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals are synthesized by co-precipitation method and used as adsorbent to remove Cr6+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ from wastewater at room temperature. The prepared sample is evaluated by XRD, BET surface area, and FESEM for structural and morphological characteristics. XRD patterns confirm the formation of a pure hematite structure of average particle size of ~ 40 nm, which is further supported by the FESEM images of the nanocrystals. The nanocrystals are found to have BET specific surface area of ~ 39.18 m2 g-1. Adsorption experiments are carried out for the different values of pH of the solutions, contact time, and initial concentration of metal ions. High efficiency Cr6+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ removal occur at pH 3, 7, and 5.5, respectively. Equilibrium study reveals that the heavy metal ion adsorption of the α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals followed Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The Cr6+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ adsorption equilibrium data are best fitted to the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals related to Cr6+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ are found to be 15.15, 11.63, and 20 mg g-1, respectively. These results clearly suggest that the synthesized α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals can be considered as potential nano-adsorbents for future environmental and health related applications.

  • The adsorption characteristics of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions has been studied by using chitin as an adsorbent. The pure chitin was obtained from the extraction of red-crab shell dumped by fish factory. Adsorption kinetics of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions on the chitin reached at the maximum adsorption within two minutes. Adsorbed amounts of heavy metals were pH 7.0>10.5>3.5 in the following order. Adsorption ratio by chitin was 21${\sim}$99% for Cd(II) ion and 24${\sim}$95% for Pb(II) ion. Recovery ratio of Cd(II) ion on the chitin was 22${\sim}$53%, and that of Pb(II) ion was 22${\sim}$73%. The adsorption behavior of these heavy metals was explained well by Freundlich adsorption isotherm.
