Rapid mold heating has been recent issue to enable the injection molding of thin-walled parts or micro/nano structures. Induction heating is an efficient way to heat a conductive workpiece by means of high-frequency electric current caused by electromagnetic induction. Because the induction heating is a convenient and efficient way of indirect heating, it has various applications such as heat treatment, brazing, welding, melting, and mold heating. The present study covers an experimental investigation on the rapid heating using the induction heating and rapid cooling using a vortex tube in order to eliminate an excessive cycle time increase. Experiments are performed in the case of a steel cup mold core with various heating and cooling conditions. Temperature is measured during heating and cooling time, from which appropriate mold heating and cooling conditions can be obtained.
To assure maximum economic benefits and the energy performance of solar water heating systems, the proper sizing of components and operating conditions need to be optimized. In recent years, a number of studies to design optimally solar water heating systems have been tried. This paper presents a design method for optimizing the various capacity-related and installation-related design variables based on life cycle cost using a genetic algorithm. The design variables considered in this study included the types and numbers of solar collector and auxiliary heaters; the types of storage tanks and heat exchangers; the solar collector slope; mass flow rates of the fluid on the hot and cold sides. The suggested method was applied for optimizing a solar water heating system for an elementary school in Seoul, South Korea. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed optimization method was assessed by analyzing the obtained optimal solutions of six case studies, each of which was simulated with different solar fractions. It is observed that a trade-off between the equipment cost and the energy cost results in an optimal design that yields the lowest life cycle cost. Therefore, it could be helpful to apply the optimal solar water heating system by comparing the various design solutions obtained by using the optimization method instead of the engineer's experience and intuition.

To analyze and verify the effect of replacing thermal storage heater by a cascade cycle heat pump using midnight electricity was installed and tested at a customer's house in Wonju, Korea. The electric night storage heater is consist of 30kW electric heater and 2,700 liters of thermal storage water tank to supply hot water for warming house floor. The power for electric heater was cut off and hot water was only generated by cascade cycle heat pump. Current thermal storage water tank was not eliminated and electric heater wiring was modified. Some operation logic of the heat pump was also modified for proper operation. The required capacity of the heat pump and hot water temperature for given warming condition were estimated. The estimated capacity of heat pump was about 19kW and estimated hot water temperature for proper heating was at least $75^{\circ}C$.
A study was made to examine the effects of postweld heat treatment(PWHT) on the toughness and microstructures in the weld heat affected zone(HAZ) of Cu-bearing HSLA-100 steel. The Gleeble thermal/mechanical simulator was used to simulate the weld HAZ. The details between toughness and PWHT of HAZ were studied by impact test, optical microscopy(O.M.), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The decrease of HAZ toughness in single thermal cycle comparing to base plate is ascribed to the coarsed-grain formed by heating to 1350.deg.C. The increase of HAZ toughness in double thermal cycle comparine to single thermal cycle is due to the fine ferrite(.alpha.) grain transformed from austenite(.gamma.)formed by heating to .alpha./.gamma. two phase region. Cu precipitated during aging for increasing the strength of base metal is dissolved during single thermal cycle to 1350.deg.C and is precipitated little on cooling and heating during subsequent weld thermal cycle. It precipitates by introducing PWHT. Thus, the decrease of toughness in triple thermal cycle of $T_{p1}$ = 1350.deg.C, $T_{p2}$ = 800.deg.C and $T_{p3}$ = 500.deg.C does not occur owing to the precipitation of Cu. The behaviors of Cu=precipitates in HAZ is similar to that in base plate. PWHT at 550.deg.C shows highest hardness and lowest toughness, whereas PWHT at 650.deg.C shows reasonable toughness, which improves the toughness of as-welded state.state.

This study aimed to analyze organic Rankine cycle(ORC) which recovers discarded heat from a gas turbine based combined cycle cogeneration(CC-cogen) plant in terms of both performance and economics. The nominal electric power of the CC-cogen plant is around $120MW_e$, and heat for district heating is $153MW_{th}$. The major purpose of this study is to compare various options in selecting heat source of the ORC. Three heat sources were compared. Case 1 uses the exhaust gas from the HRSG, which is purely wasted to environment in normal plant operation without ORC. Case 2 also uses the exhaust gas from the HRSG. On the other hand, in this case, the DH economizer, which is located at the end of the HRSG, does not operate. Case 3 generates power using some of the district heating water which is supplied to consumers. The estimated ORC power generation ranges between 0.3 to 2.3% of the power generation capacity of the CC-cogen plant. Overall, Case 3 is evaluated to be better than other two options in terms of system design flexibility and power generation capacity.
Multi-step induction heating process was applied to the powder compact melting technique as a new heating process to achieve pinpoint accuracy, faster cycle time, repeatability, non-contact and energy-efficient heat in a minimal amount of time. The objective of this study is the establishment of the input data diagram of multi step induction heating process for automation of the fabrication process of 6061 Al foams with desired density. At first, proper induction coil was designed to obtain a uniform temperature distribution over the entire cross sectional area of specimen. By using this coil, foaming experiments were performed to investigate the multi-step induction heating conditions such as capacity, temperature and time conditions of each heating and holding step. On the basis of the obtained multi-step induction heating conditions, relationship between final heating temperature and fraction of porosity was investigated.

Pseudo-Brayton cycle is defined as an ideal Brayton cycle admitting the difference between heat capacities of working fluid during heating and cooling processes. The endo-pseudo-Brayton cycle which is a pseudo-Brayton cycle with heat transfer processes is analyzed with the consideration of maximum power conditions and the results were compared with those of the endo-Carnot cycle and endo-Brayton cycle. As results, the maximum power is an extremum with respect to the cycle temperature and the flow heat capacities of heating and cooling processes. At the maximum power condition, the heat capacity of the cold side is smaller than that of heat sink flow. And the heat capacity of endo-Brayton cycle is always between those of heat source and sink flows and those of the working fluids of pseudo-Brayton cycle. There is another optimization problem to decide the distribution of heat transfer capacity to the hot and cold side heat exchangers. The ratios of the capacies of the endo-Brayton and the endo-pseudo-Braton cycles at the maximum power condition are just unity. With the same heat source and sink flows and with the same total heat transfer caqpacities, the maximum power output of the Carnot cycle is the least as expected, but the differences among them were small if the heat transfer capacity is not so large. The thermal efficiencies of the endo-Brayton and endo-Carnot cycle were proved to be 1-.root.(T$_{7}$/T$_{1}$) but it is not applicable to the pseudo-Brayton case, instead it depends on comparative sizes of heat capacities of the heat source and sink flow.w.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the field Operation Characteristics of a sea water heat source cascade heat pump system and system applicable to Building. Cascade heat pump system is composed R410A compressor, R134a compressor, EEV, cascade heat exchanger, Plate heat exchanger etc. Building area is $890m^2$ and has five floors above ground. R410A is used for a low-stage working fluid while R134a is for a high-stage. The system could runs at dual mode. One is mode of general R410A refrigeration cycle in summer and the other is cascade cycle. In order to gain a high temperature supply water in winter season, the system is designed to perform a cascade cycle. The filed test results show that the sea water heat source heat pump system exhibits a COP of about 5.5 in cooling mode along with a heating COP of about 4.0 in 1-stage heating mode. Cascade 2-stage heat pump system is enough to supply $60^{\circ}C$ water and heating COP is about 3.0
It is becoming increasingly important to make use of alternative energy source. because It is not able to rely on only fossil fuel for the recent increasing demand of energy consumption. With this situation, lots of studies for utilizing low grade energy such as industrial waste heat, solar energy, and geothermal energy have been conducted. The aim of this study is to predict the operation characteristics of working fluid by using performance analysis program (ThermoFlex) through the system analysis which is not mixing district return water but using ORC(Organic Rankine Cycle, hereinafter ORC) as a downstream cycle when accumulating district heating (hereinafter DH). In this study, We conducted the performance analysis for the case which has the district heating water temperature($120^{\circ}C$) and Flow rate of $163m^3/h$ (including District Heating return water flow), and examined several working fluid which is proper to this temperature. The case using R245fa (which is the best-case) showed 269.2kW power output, 6.37% efficiency. Additionally, Cut down on fuel was expected because of the boiler inlet temperature increase by being Formed $57.3{\sim}85^{\circ}C$ in a temperature of district heating return water, depending on a pressure change of a condenser in ORC system.

This study examined the economics of a solar water heating system for an office building using life cycle cost (LCC) optimization simulations. The numerical simulations were conducted with TRNSYS and GenOpt employing the Hooke-Jeeves algorithm. The solar collector area, slope, mass flow rate per collector area and storage tank volume were selected as the main design parameters of the solar water heating system. The LCC optimization simulations of the system were carried out for cases where water temperature was $60^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$. The results showed that for water temperature at $60^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$ the collector area could be decreased by 17% and 28%, storage tank volume could be decreased by 49% and 54%, and mass flow rate per collector area increased by 5% and 9% respectively compared to a non-optimized system. The LCC of the system was reduced by 4% for $60^{\circ}C$ and 7% for $50^{\circ}C$. The initial installation cost of the system was reduced by 24% for $60^{\circ}C$ and 34% for $50^{\circ}C$. However, the operating cost of the system increased by 16% for $60^{\circ}C$ and 36% for $50^{\circ}C$ compared to a traditional solar water heating system.
