  • With the rapid growth of mobility technology, the industrial sector is demanding storage devices that can reliably process data from various equipment and sensors in vehicles. NAND flash memory is being utilized as a storage device in mobility environments because it has the advantages of low power and fast data processing speed as well as strong external shock resistance. However, flash memory is characterized by data corruption due to long-term exposure to high temperatures. Therefore, a dedicated system for temperature management is required in mobility environments where high temperature exposure due to weather or external heat sources such as solar radiation is frequent. This paper designs a dedicated temperature management system for managing storage device temperature in a mobility environment. The designed temperature management system is a hybrid of traditional air cooling and water cooling technologies. The cooling method is designed to operate adaptively according to the temperature of the storage device, and it is designed not to operate when the temperature step is low to improve energy efficiency. Finally, experiments were conducted to analyze the temperature difference between each cooling method and different heat dissipation materials, proving that the temperature management policy is effective in maintaining performance.

  • In order to develop highly-integrated RGBY(Red, Green, Blue, Yellow) LED light, a high thermal radiation ceramic package was manufactured, and the encapsulation process was applied with a vacuum printing encapsulation system(VPES). After the completion of vacuum printing, the shape of the encapsulation layer could be controlled by heat treatment during the curing process, and the optical power became highly increased as the encapsulation layer approached a dome shape. The optical characteristics involved in a Correlated Color Temperature(CCT), a Color Rendering Index (CRI), and the efficiency of RGBY LED light were able to be identified by the experimental designing method. Regarding the characteristics of the white light of RGBY LED light, which were measured on the basis of the aforementioned optical characteristics, CRI posted 88, CCT recorded 5,720[$^{\circ}K$], and efficiency exhibited 52[lm/W]. The chip temperature of RGBY LEDs was below 55[$^{\circ}C$] when the consumption power of LED chips was 0.1[W] for the red, 0.3[W] for the green, 0.08[W] for the blue, and 0.24[W] for the yellow. Also, the thermal resistance of the highly-integrated RGBY LED light measured by T3Ster was 2.3[K/W].

  • This study evaluated the energy efficiency of a windows system using built-in blinds, with regard to their insulation performance and their blocking of solar radiation. The study took advantage of the "Physibel Voltra" program as a physical simulation of heat transfer. To simulate the "Physibel Voltra" program, I practiced a mock-up test to determine heating quality and translation condition. I analyzed the propensity to annual energy consumption, the annual quantity of heat transfer, and the annual cooling and heating cost through a computer simulation for one general household in an apartment building. In the test, it was found that compared to a general windows system, a windows system with built-in blinds reduced the annual heat transfer by 10% in cooling states and by 11% in heating states when the blind was up. When the blind was down, the windows system with built-in blinds reduced the annual heat transfer by 25% in cooling states and 30% in heating states. When a windows system with built-in blinds is compared with a general windows system, the quantity of cooling and heating loads is reduced by 283.3kw in cooling states and 76.3kw in heating states. This leads to a reduction in the required cooling and heating energy of 359.6kw per house. It is thus judged that the use of a windows system with built-in blinds is advantageous in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, because the annual TOE (tons of oil equivalent) per house is reduced by 0.078TOE, while $tCO_2$ is reduced by $0.16tCO_2$. In addition, compared with a general windows system, the cost of cooling and heating loads in the system reduces the annual cooling cost by 100,000won, and the annual heating cost by 50,000won. Ultimately, this means that cooling and heating loads are cut by 150,000won per year.

  • Water mist fire suppression system utilizes the fire suppression features such as cooling of fire source, dilution of ambient oxygen, and shielding of radiation heat with the evaporation of microscopic water droplets. The momentum of water mist is relatively lower than that of larger water droplet and the infiltration of water mist to the fire source is not effective. Contribution of evaporated water vapor is liable to decline to limited portion of fire source due to its light weight and sparse density. On the other hand, the cycling water mist pattern is expected to improve the penetration force of water mist as well as the air expelling capability with the stratified spray characteristics. At this paper, we present the analyzed fire suppression capability of intermittent water spray pattern by use of FDS which is computational fire dynamics fire model. We expect this analysis can support the basic concept to the development of the prototype of water mist nozzle.

  • Purpose: Recently, significant heat loss through the window takes place in buildings. Nevertheless, there exists little literature concerning the exterior horizontal shading devices and the design criteria are not clearly settled yet. Applying the exterior horizontal shading devices is more efficient as compared to the interior shading devices in that solar radiation can be directly blocked before passing through the window or the envelope. The purpose of this study is to reduce the internal load by designing the exterior horizontal shading devices and verify the degree of reduction in energy consumption. Method: This study aims to reduce energy consumption in cooling and heating through proposing proper length and shape of the exterior horizontal shading devices in public buildings. In the process, actual energy data and the Design Builder simulation program are utilized. In addition, economic aspect is considered to figure out the optimal length of the exterior horizontal shading devices that maximizes efficiency. Result: As a result, the proper length and shape of the exterior horizontal shading devices are provided as follows: 1) Energy consumption in cooling and heating is minimized when the exterior horizontal shading devices are designed as 0.5m*2. 2) Electricity bill is the lowest when the exterior horizontal shading devices are designed as 3.3m*2. The gap between maximum and minimum electricity bill is about 7.8~14%.

  • Seed viability testing provides valuable information for assessing seed lot germinability. However, most testing methods require destruction of seed prior to test. Because the dissected seeds for viability test cannot be used further evaluation, the nondestructively X-ray photography technique that can be applied for the evaluation of seed quality has been developed. In order to know the validity and accuracy of X-ray photography technique in seed evaluation test that conducted to remove the abnormal seed from a seed lot, we have compared the results from tetrazolium viability test, germination test and X-ray contrast method in cotton. Metallic salts treatment increased the efficiency of X-ray photographic method by enhancing the penetration of X-ray in abnormal or damaged seeds rather than normal seeds that have strong and well-organized tissues in seed. Cotton seeds presoaked for 16 hr in distilled water followed by soaking into metallic salt solution (5% NaI in water) for 60 min were easily classified seeds into dead seed and viable seed based on the radiography images obtained by X-ray radiation. We concluded that soft X-ray photography was reliable to find out the various defective characters due to heat and mechanical damage of seeds.

  • In this paper new air-cooling system utilizing Stirling engine was proposed for improving efficiency in solar photovoltaic power generation. The solar cell plate was equipped with semi-circular channel for air flow on the backside. Beta-type Stirling engine was installed on the plate and its flywheel was connected to a motor fan by a transmission belt. A forced convective air flow for heat radiation was generated by the operation of the self-starting Stirling engine. The performance tests for power generation of solar cell with or without the proposed air-cooling system were conducted under halogen lamp. From the experimental results, it was found that decline in output voltage of the solar cell with proposed cooling system was 25% less than that of the solar cell without cooling system.

  • Recently, the cases of BIPV(Building-integrated Photovoltaic) have been increased with interest in renewable energy application for buildings. PV System in building can perform a variety of roles as an energy supplier, exterior materials, aesthetic element and etc. To apply PV modules in buildings, various factors should be considered, such as the installation angle and orientation of PV module, shading, and temperature. The temperature of PV modules that are attached to building surfaces especially is one of the most important factors, as it affects both the electrical efficiency of a PV module and the energy load in a building. BIPV modules designed as finished material for spandrels are presented in this paper. The purpose of this study is to analysis on the thermal performance characteristics of BIPV modules. This study dealt with different types of BIPV modules depending on the backside material, such as clear glass and backsheet. The analysis of monitoring data shows that the PV module temperature was closely related to the solar radiation on the BIPV module surface, and the BIPV used at the backside also had an effect on the PV module temperature that in turn determines its thermal performance.

  • In this paper, it is performed the optimal design of the UV LED bar which can be used variously. The UV LED Bar emits ultraviolet rays, so it is important to emit ultraviolet rays constantly for the purpose of use. In order to emit a certain amount of ultraviolet rays as ever, the ultraviolet ray emission should be driven by a constant current source within the operable input voltage range. And also the heat dissipation is particularly important because of the long ultraviolet emission retention time due to the UV utilization characteristics. In addition, since human body protection is essential, the algorithm is configured to operate according to human body detection using distance sensor and Bluetooth. Three 365nm UV LEDs were used in series to emit ultraviolet UVA, operating at the constant current of 500mA with an efficiency of 87.5% and a power consumption of 6.006W. The ultraviolet radiation dose was measured at $5.35mW/cm^2$ at the distance of 10 cm when measured by the Lutron ultraviolet measuring instruments.

  • At a time when world population and food supply are in a delicate balance, it is essential that we look at factors to improve this balance. We can alter the environment to better fit the plant's needs, or we can alter the plant to better fit the environment. Improved technology has allowed us to increase the yield level. For moderately detrimental weather events technology has generally decreased the yield variation, yet for major weather disasters the variation has increased. We have raised the upper level, but zero is still the bottom level. As we concentrate the production of particular crops into limited areas where the environment is closest to optimum, we may be increasing the risk of a major weather related disaster. We need to evaluate the degree of variability of different crops, and how weather and technology can interact to affect it. The natural limits of crop production are imposed by important ecological factors. Production is a function of the climate, the soil, and the crop and all activities related to them. In looking at the environment of a crop we must recognize these are individuals, populations and ecosystems. Under intensive agriculture we try to limit the competition to one desired species. The environment is made up of a complex of factors; radiation, moisture, temperature and wind, among others. Plant response to the environment is due to the interaction of all of these factors, yet in attempting to understand them we often examine each factor individually. Variation in crop yields is primarily a function of limiting environmental parameters. Various weather parameters will be discussed, with emphasis placed on how they impact on crop production. Although solar radiation is a driving force in crop production, it often shows little relationship to yield variation. Water may enter into crop production as both a limiting and excessive factor. The effects of moisture deficiency have received much more attention than moisture excess. In many areas of the world, a very significant portion of yield variation is due to variation in the moisture factor. Temperature imposes limits on where crops can be grown, and the type of crop that can be grown in an area. High temperature effects are often combined with deficient moisture effects. Cool temperatures determine the limits in which crops can be grown. Growing degree units, or heat accumulations, have often been used as a means of explaining many temperature effects. Methods for explaining chilling effects are more limited.
