This study deals with the friction welding of SKH55 and SM45C; The friction time was variable conditions under the conditions of spindle revolution 2,000rpm, friction pressure of 190MPa, upset pressure of 270MPa and upset time of 2.0 seconds. Under these conditions, the microstructure of weld interface, tensile fracture surface and mechanical tests were studied, and so the results were as follows. 1. When the friction time is 1.0 seconds, the tensile strength of friction welds was 926MPa, which is around as much as 84% of the tensile strength of base metal(SKH55), the bending strength of friction welds was 1,542MPa, which is around as much as 80% of the bending strength of base metal(SKH55), the shear strength of friction welds was 519MPa, which is around as much as 70% of the shear strength of base metal(SKH55). 2 According to the hardness test, the hardness distribution of the weld interface was formed from 964Hv to 254Hv. HAZ(Heat Affected Zone) was formed from the weld interface to 1.5mm of SKH55 and 2mm of SM45C.

A regenerative evaporative cooler has been fabricated and tested for the evaluation of cooling performance. The regenerative evaporative cooler is a kind of indirect evaporative cooler comprised of multiple pairs of dry and wet channels. The air flowing through the dry channels is cooled without any change in the humidity and at the outlet of the dry channel a part of air is redirected to the wet channel where the evaporative cooling takes place. The regenerative evaporative cooler fabricated in this study consists of the multiple pairs of finned channels in counterflow arrangement. The fins and heat transfer plates were made of aluminum and brazed for good thermal connection. Thin porous layer coating was applied to the internal surface of the wet channel to improve surface wettability. The regenerative evaporative cooler was placed in a climate chamber and tested at various operation condition. The cooling performance is found greatly influenced by the evaporation water flow rate. To improve the cooling performance, the evaporation water flow rate needs to be minimized as far as the even distribution of the evaporation water is secured. At the inlet condition of $32^{\circ}C$ and 50%RH, the outlet temperature was measured at $22^{\circ}C$ which is well below the inlet wet-bulb temperature of $23.7^{\circ}C$.

The suitable turbulence model is found to be required in the course of establishing a proper analysis methodology for thermal stripping phenomena which are shown in strong temperature variation area such as reactors and propulsion devices. Three different turbulence models of $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model, modified $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model, and full Reynolds stress(FRS) model, are applied to analyze unsteady turbulent flows with temperature variation. Three test cases are selected for verification. These are vertical jet flows with water and sodium, and parallel jet flow with sodium. Analysis yields the conclusion that 3-D computation with FRS betters others. However, modified modeling is required to improve its heat transfer characteristic analysis. Further analysis is performed to find momentum variation effects on temperature distribution. It is found that the momentum increase results increase of fluid mixing and magnitude of temperature variation.

The corrosion behavior of super austenitic stainless steel was studied by examining the characteristics of the sigma phase formed in the steel. A range of experimental and analytical methods was employed, including potentiodynamic polarization tests, critical pitting temperature tests, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Three steel samples with different sigma phase levels were obtained by intentionally adjusting the manufacturing process. The results showed that the corrosion resistance of the samples was strongly dependent upon the size and distribution of the sigma phase precipitated in the samples. The larger the size of the sigma phase, the higher the Mo content in the sigma phase and the higher the depletion level of Mo at the interface between the matrix/sigma phase, the more samples with a coarse-sized sigma phase were susceptible to localized pitting corrosion at the interface. These results suggest that various manufacturing processes, such as welding and the post-heat treatment of the steel, should be optimized so that both the size and fraction of the sigma phase precipitated in the steel are small to improve the resistance to localized corrosion.
Inorganic pigments have high thermal stability and chemical resistance at high temperature. For these reasons, they are used in clay, paints, plastic, polymers, colored glass and ceramics. $CoAl_2O_4$ nano-powder was synthesized by reverse-micelle processing the mixed precursor(consisting of $Co(NO_3)_2$ and $Al(NO_3)_3$). The $CoAl_2O_4$ was prepared by mixing an aqueous solution at a Co:Al molar ratio of 1:2. The average particle size, and the particle-size distribution, of the powders synthesized by heat treatment (at 900; 1,000; 1,100; and $1,200^{\circ}C$ for 2h) were in the range of 10-20 nm and narrow, respectively. The average size of the synthesized nano-particles increased with increasing water-to-surfactant molar ratio. The synthesized $CoAl_2O_4$ powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis(XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) and color spectrophotometry. The intensity of X-ray diffraction of the synthesized $CoAl_2O_4$ powder, increased with increasing heating temperature. As the heating temperature increased, crystal-size of the synthesized powder particles increased. As the R-value(water/surfactant) and heating temperature increased, the color of the inorganic pigments changed from dark blue-green to cerulean blue.
The thermal analysis on the spent fuel shipping cask for a PWR fuel assembly is performed. Under the normal and fire-accident conditions the temperature distribution through a multilayer cask calculated in compliance with 10 CFR Part 71. A KNU 5&6 spent fuel assembly is assumed to be the decay heat source, which has the maximum discharge turnup of 45, 000MWD/MTU and has been stored in the spent fuel storage pool for 300 days. As a result of thermal analysis, the maximum cladding temperature in case of dry cavity under fire-accident conditions is calculated to be 455$^{\circ}C$. This value is much less than the limiting value specified in 10 CFR Part 50.46. It indicates that no fuel rod cladding rupture could occur under fire-accident conditions. It was also found that no melting of lead would take place in the major shield region.
Sarcoplasmic reticulum subfractions were isolated from rabbit sarcoplasmic reticulum vesicles using ultracentrifugation in a continuous sucrose gradient (12.5% 50%) after French pressure treatment. And proteins in sarcoplasmic reticulum were detected by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and glycoproteins were identified through the reaction with 1251-concanavalin A.The electrophoresis showed that sarcoplasmic reticulum contained predominantly $Ca^2$+-AThase and calsequestrin along with high affinity calcium binding protein, intrinsic glycoprotein 160 Kd, 94 Kd, 80 Kd, 38 Kd, 34 Kd and 24 Kd proteins. Among these, the protein of about 80 Kd which has been known as one of heat shock proteins was especially enriched in the terminal cistemae of sarcoplasmic reticulum. Meanwhile, autoradiogram of 125 I-concanavalin A bound to the stained gels showed the distribution of glycoproteins which included 160 Kd glycoprotein, 94 Kd glycoprotein, calsequestrin and intrinsic glycoprotein Among these, the protein of about 160 Kd was especially enriched in longitudial sarcoplasmic reticulum and T-tubule, and the protein of about 94 Kd which has been known as one of glucose-regulated proteins was also enriched in T-tubule and sharply reduced in terminal cistemae.

Pipe-rack structures supporting high temperature and pressure are of great importance to ensure the safety of the operation of the plants. If some damage occurred in the pipe-rack structure, the facilities not only bring damage to the commercial property, but also result in economic losses. Specially, since pipe-rack structures are exposed to various environmental conditions, it is essential to evaluate the thermal behavior of the structure caused by environmental conditions for the appropriate design and maintenance of the pipe-rack structure. Thus, based on a selected, typical pipe-rack structure, a thermal-stress coupled analysis was conducted to evaluate the temperature distributions and thermal stresses of the structure. For this, this study accounted for the operating condition of the pipe and the effect of environmental conditions, Yeosu in South Korea and Saudi Arabia in the Middle East. The results of the study showed the need for accounting for a variance in the environmental factors to evaluate the thermal behavior of the pipe-rack structure along with the working condition of pipe.

The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is an electric power device that limits the fault current immediately in a power grid. Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has been developing a 154 kV, 2 kA SFCL since 2011 to protect power grids from increasing fault current and improve the stability and quality of electric power. This SFCL adopts 2G YBCO wires and operates at 71 K and 5 bars. In this paper, a cooling system for the 154 kV SFCL and its cooling test results are reported. This cooling system uses a Stirling-type cooler to make sub-cooled liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$), which cools the superconductor modules of the SFCL. The $LN_2$ is circulated between the cooler and the cryostat that contains superconductor modules. The $LN_2$ also plays the role of a high voltage insulator between the modules and the cryostat, so the pressure was maintained at 5 bars for high insulation performance. After installation in a test site, the cooling characteristics of the system were tested. In this operation test, some important data were measured such as temperature distribution in $LN_2$, pressure change, performance of the heat exchanger, and cooling capacity of the total system. Consequently, the results indicate that the cooling system operates well as designed.
An integrated computer program consisting of a pre-processor, main solver, and post-processor was developed for the design of large steel castings. The pre-processor, based on the AutoCAD, enables the user to produce approval drawings, casting design drawings and mesh diagrams in sequence using a personal computer. In the main solver, two numerical models were employed; one models the fluid flow during mold filling, and the other models the heat transfer and solidification. The post-processor can be used to present simulation results such as flow pattern, mold filling sequences, solidification times, temperature gradients and location of shrinkage defects by color graphics. In order to validate the applicability of the present integrated program, a series of experiments on simple-shaped steel castings were carried out. After the validation of the present model, it was applied to the casting design of the large steel anchor of an SC42 alloy. Various solidification parameters such as a temperature distribution and a solidification time in the casting and the mold were compared with those obtained experimentally. Simulated results predicting shrinkage defects were in good agreement with those obtained experimentally. It was found that the present method can be successfully applied to the quantitative casting design for complex-shaped large steel castings.
