Purpose: Few studies have examined periodontal pathogens from saliva samples in periodontally healthy young adults. The purposes of this study were to determine the prevalence of periodontopathic bacteria and to quantify periodontal pathogens in saliva samples using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays in periodontally healthy Korean young adults under 35 years of age. Methods: Nine major periodontal pathogens were analyzed by real-time PCR in saliva from 94 periodontally healthy young adults. Quantification of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Treponema denticola, Prevotella intermedia, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Campylobacter rectus, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius, and Eikenella corrodens was performed by DNA copy number measurement. Results: F. nucleatum and E. corrodens were detected in all subjects; the numbers of positive samples were 87 (92.6%), 91 (96.8%), and 90 (95.7%) for P. gingivalis, P. anaerobius, and C. rectus, respectively. Other pathogens were also detected in periodontally healthy subjects. Analysis of DNA copy numbers revealed that the most abundant periodontal pathogen was F. nucleatum, which was significantly more prevalent than all other bacteria (P<0.001), followed by P. anaerobius, P. gingivalis, E. corrodens, C. rectus, and T. denticola. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of each bacterium between men and women. The DNA copy number of total bacteria was significantly higher in men than in women. Conclusions: Major periodontal pathogens were prevalent in the saliva of periodontally healthy Korean young adults. Therefore, we suggest that the development of periodontal disease should not be overlooked in periodontally healthy young people, as it can arise due to periodontal pathogen imbalance and host susceptibility.

The change in vascular adhesion molecule expression and number of infiltrating leukocytes were investigated irnmunohistochemically in clinically healthy and inflammed gingiva. Monoclonal antibodies to ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and E-cadherin were used to identify positive vessels and leukocyte within gingival biopsies. 10 healthy gingiva and 30 inflammed gingiva was resected by clinical crown lengthening and modified Widman flap operation, respectively. Leukocyte entry into tissues at sites of inflammation is controlled by the interaction between adhesion molecule and endothelium. Because of rapid and severe destructive periodontal disease that is remarkable leukocyte adhesion deficiency, it is very important to unerdstand the mechanism of host defence against periodontal disease. The purpose of this investigation was the characterization of the presence and distribution of the adhesion molecule(ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and Evcadherin) in inflammatory gingival tissues compared to clinically healthy gingiva. The results were as followed; 1. ICAM-1 was distributed on basal layer, endothelium and mononuclear cells 10 healthy gingiva but inflammed gingiva was observed stronger stain than healthy gingiva. 2. Rare expression was observed in both group but few positive VCAM-1 cells were investigated in inflammatory gingival tissues 3. E-cadherin was expressed in only epithelium and reduced expression was observed in inflammatory gingival tissues. ICAM-1, VCAM-1 showed more expression in inflammatory tissues compared to healthy gingiva. Conversely, E-cadherin revealed a opposite result. These finding demonstrate a characteristic distribution and degree of adhesion molecule in healthy and inflammatory gingival tissues. But it is suggested that more detail study be progressive associated with leukocyte adhesion molecule to determine characterization of periodontal disease.
The author has synchronously recorded average electromyographic activities of temporalis anteriors and masseter muscles and the maximum bite force on the mandibular first molar on the prferred chewing side. These activities were recorded in order to study the EMG activity pattern of the working side and the balancing side to maximum bete force and functioning state of muscle in 30 patients with TMD and in 30 healthy subjects as controls. The results were as follows : 1. The maximum bite force on the mandibular first molar on the preferred chewing side was 20.63kg in TMD patients and 53.30kg in the healthy subjects(p<0.01). The maximum bite force in TMD patients was 38.7% of the healthy subjects. 2. The average electromyographic activities of temporalis anterioris and masseter muscles on the working side and the balancing side during maximum bite force were lower in TMD patients than in the healthy subjects(p<0.01). The average electromyographic activities of each muscle in TMD patients were 61.0%-62.8% of the healthy subjects. 3. The proportionalities of average electromyographic activities of temporalis anteriors and masseter muscles on the working side and the balancing side to maximum bite force were greater in TMD patients than in the healthy subjects(p<0.01). 4. Between the working side and the balancing side, the proportionality of average electromyographic activity of temporalis anterior to maximum bite force on the working healthy subjects (p<0.01). The proportionality of average electromyographic activity of working side and the balancing side in both groups (p<0.05).
The purpose of this study was to assess healthy city level of the selected cities of Korea, Japan, and England using healthy city index. Based on WHO health city profile, this study proposed 5 index domains comprised with human biology, life style, shelthe & socioeconomic data, environmental & infrastructural data, and public health policy and services. We identified 6 cities (Changwon, Wonju, Seoul, Ichikawa, Fukuroi and Brighton). The human biology level of Korean cities was better than that of Ichikawa, Fukuroi, and Brighton city except Wonju. But the shelter & socioeconomic index level of the foreign cities was better than that of Korean cities. In the environmental & infrastructural idex, even though Changwon city showed the highest level among healthy cities in this study, other Korean cities had lower level compared to the foreign cities. In the public health policy and services index level, except Wonju, Korean cities had lower level than that of all foreign cities. In comparing a summative evaluation index of all proposed index, Ichikawa and Fukuroi had the highest level of city health but Seoul city had the lowest healthy level. Changwon and Wonju had higher level of city health compare to that of Brighton and Seoul. To promote the level of city health, those findings could contribute to healthy city planning process in terms of identifying any weakness and strength of the cities selected in this study.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop new balance evaluation index that can discriminate fall risk factors and provide effective interventions for healthy elderly. In order to conduct this study, the balance assessment tools (TUG, mCTSIB, OLST, FRT and BBS) currently used in clinic were re-evaluated using biomechanical analysis. Method: The participants were healthy elderly people over 65 years old, n=26, age: 69.31±3.13 years; height: 154.00±4.12 cm, body weight: 56.13±6.04 kg. The variables are length of CoM-BoS, length of CoP-BoS, range of CoP, mean distance of CoP, mean frequency of CoP, root mean square of CoP, joint angle, ASM (%SL), CoP-CoM angle. Results: As a result of this study, the following items were included in the list of new balance evaluation index for the healthy elderly, showing differences in the biomechanical evaluation based on the clinical evaluation (Inclusion list: TUG, OLST, 8th assessment item of BBS (reaching forward with outstretched arm), 11th item (turning 360 degrees), 13th item (standing with one foot in front), 14th item (standing on one foot)). Conclusion: Based on the results, the new balance evaluation index for the healthy elderly determined through this study can be used to prevent the fall by evaluating the balance ability in various situations that can be experienced in the normal daily life of the healthy elderly.
This study examines the dietary, exercise, and other daily habits of Daegu residents and how these relate to the residents' perception of their own health status, and comparatively analyzes the lifestyles and daily habits of those who perceive themselves to be healthy and those who do not. This research study used Inbody 230(Body composition analysis, Biospace, Korea) to make body and health measurements such as body composition and obesity index. Also, included in this study was a survey on the lifestyle patterns of the residents. The data from this survey was analyzed with SPSS. The results show that among the residents of Daegu, those who perceive themselves to be healthy have lower body fat and are less obese on average. With respect to dietary habits, those who believe themselves to be healthy have more regular dietary habits such as rarely skipping a meal than those who do not believe themselves to be healthy. In addition those who say they are healthy exercise more frequently and for a longer duration than those who say they are not healthy. As for daily habits, those who report they are healthy show greater satisfaction with life and suffer less from stress than those who report themselves to be unhealthy. This study demonstrates that in order to improve people's health in Korea, good dietary, exercise and daily habits need to be emphasized. Additionally, health education and health awareness programs need to be established in each region. Follow-up studies should be conducted afterwards.
Objectives: The economic evaluation of health promotion programs has increasingly become an imperative activity for securing public fund or budget. The purpose of this study is to conduct an economic evaluation for the healthy school canteen program using the contingent valuation method(CVM). Methods: To estimate the benefit from the healthy school canteen program, double-bounded dichotomous choice method as a sort of willingness to pay was employed. Four hundred parents who lived in Seoul and have students at middle or high schools, were administrated by semi-constructive questionnaire containing the necessary information for benefit estimation. Cost estimation of healthy school canteen program was made referring to three types of pilot programs. Finally, the benefit against the cost was worked out according to the three levels of estimated cost. Results: Cost estimate is 8,488 and 9,311 won depending on the two senarios about how to invest on the program, respectably. The results of benefit estimate shows that the average cost willingness to pay(WTP) for healthy school canteen program is 21,275 won(16,963-59,838 won, 95% CI) and total benefits turned out 14.7 billion won. According to the cost-benefit analysis, average benefit-cost ratio is from 2.3 to 3.6. Conclusions: Healthy school canteen program could be economically accepted, and government can take consideration of expanding beneficiaries of healthy school canteen program for health promotion.
This study was conducted to compare activities of daily living, fatigue and depression between rheumatoid arthritis patients and healthy persons. The subjects consisted of 53 rheumatoid arthritis patients and 53 healthy persons at a university hospital in Daegu City. Data were collected by means of structured interviews with questionnaires from July 20, 1999 to August 25, 1999. The instrument used in this study were the activities of daily living scale developed by Katz et al. (1970) and Barthel(1973), Multidimensional Assessment of Fatigue by Belza et al.(1995) and CES-D(Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression) scale. Analysis of data was done by use of descriptive statistics, Pearson Correlation, Chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA, MANCOVA and Duncan with the SPSS program. The major findings are summarized as follows : 1. The first hypothesis that the rheumatoid arthritis patients will have a lower degree of activities of daily living than the healthy persons was supported (F=4.584, p=.035). 2. The second hypothesis that the rheumatoid arthritis patient will have a higher degree of fatigue than the healthy persons was supported (F=7.799, p=.006). 3. The third hypothesis that the rheumatoid arthritis patients will have a higher degree of depression than the healthy persons was supported (F=4.768, p=.031). With the above results, it can be concluded that rheumatoid arthritis patients had a lower degree of activities of daily living and a higher degree of fatigue and depression than the healthy persons. Therefore, by providing appropriate nursing intervention, activities of daily living would be much better and fatigue and depression would be alleviated.
In order to reduce the health inequalities within a society changes need to be made in broad health determinants and their distribution in the population. It has been expected that the Health impact assessment(HIA) and Healthy Cities can provide opportunities and useful means for changing social policy and environment related with the broad health determinants in developed countries. HIA is any combination of procedures or methods by which a proposed 4P(policy, plan, program, project) may be judged as to the effects it may have on the health of a population. Healthy city is one that is continually creating and improving those physical and social environments and expanding those community resources which enable people to mutually support each other in performing all the functions of life and in developing to their maximum potential. In Korea, social and academic interest regarding the HIA and Healthy Cities has been growing recently but the need of HIA and Healthy Cities in the perspective of reducing health inequality was not introduced adequately. So we reviewed the basic concepts and methods of the HIA and Healthy Cities, and its possible contribution to reducing health inequalities. We concluded that though the concepts and methods of the HIA and Healthy Cities are relatively new and still in need of improvement, they will be useful in approaching the issue of health inequality in Korea.

To find a healthy driving posture, in this study, survey and empirical analysis given onto measurement of car-seat angle has been performed. Among 153 male respondents, those drivers who has minimum 5 year experience and 2 hours daily driving has been selected by a multiple screening process. They were further confirmed to have no discomfort history in any body region caused by the driving task. Final 44 people verified that their actual driving posture is not significantly different (p = 0.692) from healthy one they think. And their data, accordingly, the healthy driving postures are clustered based on the same seat-cushion angle, seat-back angle and trunk-thigh angle. Consequently, three seat-angles of the 44 subjects showed a significant difference only with their height information which is the most effecting factor on driving posture among the physical characteristics. That is a first result categorized healthy driving posture classified physical, if it were departmentalized into additional study, could be able to reflected a factor of "healthy" on car seat design.
