  • It is known that the role of informal support for elderly women is critical to their physical and mental health, adjustment in old age, and their overall life satisfaction. Elderly women's situation such as social losses, widowhood, living alone, and geographic relocation etc. may result in a need for more informal supports for elderly women's health than ever before. Particularly, women's same-sex friendships were rated higher for overall quality, intimacy, enjoyment, and nurturance. Unlike a generally accepted notion that later life for women is a time of isolation and loneliness, elderly women tend to maintain and reestablish their friendship regardless their marital status and living situation. Although studies on informal support for elderly women were inconclusive in many ways, elderly women's friendship tends to be stable despite of changing health status and life events. The relative importance between daughters and friends was also controversial. This study suggests that more research with reliable measurements is necessary for the practical prevention and intervention program of elderly women's health on this issue.

  • Objectives : In spite of the importance of preparing a support system for public health programs, there is a relatively poor system to support Oriental medicine public health programs. In this regard, considerations have been made to give directions for the development of technical support organizations for Oriental medicine public health programs. Methods : The authors investigated support organizations of public health programs and compared Oriental medicine public health programs with them. Results : Technical support organizations for Oriental medicine public health programs are controlled by the National Traditional Korean Medicine Research and Development Center. However there is lack in the relevant budget, technical support, professional abilities for research and planning, connections with research institutes in the Oriental medicine field, and affiliations with the other public health programs. Conclusion : In this context, the following actions are required to systematically and technologically support Oriental medicine public health programs. Health improvement & technical support organizations whose incorporation is promoted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, should include the National Traditional Korean Medicine Research and Development Center, so as to activate the Oriental medicine public health programs. Legal provisions and the budget for the Oriental medicine public health programs should be secured so as to help identify and implement effective programs for improving the community health. A society for public health oriental medicine need be established so as to consolidate research capacities for the Oriental medicine public health programs. Programs should be developed to train professionals and supports should be intensified for activities to build capacities in technical support organizations.

  • This study was designed to construct a model that predicts the health promoting behavior of the Korean elderly. Data were collected by self-reported questionaires from 254 Korean elderly in seoul, from June 1 to July 15, 1998. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and correlational analysis using pc-SAS program. The Linear Structural Modeling(LISREL) 8.0 program was used to find the best fit model which predicts causal relationships of variables. The overall fit of the hypothetical model to the data was moderate[X$^2$=249.83(df=83, p=.00), RMR=.07, GFI=.90, NNFI=.92, NFI =.91]. The predictable variables of health promoting behavior of the Korean elderly were social activity. social support. self-integrity and helplessness except the perceived health status.
