  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among psychosocial well-being, perceived health status and health promoting lifestyle practices. Data has been collected from November 1, 1998 to April 30, 1999. One hundred and ninety eight middle-aged women completed a multiple self-reported questionnaire on psychosocial well-being, perceived health status and health promoting lifestyle profile. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS 7.5 for Windows using Pearson Correlation Coefficients, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test. The Major results of this study were as follows: 1. The average item score for psychosocial well-being was low at 54.49, the level of perceived health status was moderate at 5.74, and health promoting lifestyle practices were low at 112.05. Among the subscales of the health promoting lifestyle profile, self-actualization(3.08) and nutrition(2.92) were scored higher than exercise(1.81) and health responsibility(1.79). 2. The performance of health promoting lifestyle was positively correlated with perceived health status(r= .190) and psychosocial well-being(r= .497). Also, positive correlations were observed between perceived health status and psychosocial well-being(r= .181). 3. There were statistically significant differences for health promoting lifestyle, psychosocial well-being and perceived health status according to sociodemographic variables; the performance of health promoting lifestyle was significantly different according to education, economic status, exercise and smoking. Psychosocial well-being was also significantly different according to education, exercise and drinking. Perceived health status was significantly different according to religion, education, occupation and supporter. These findings help to understand relationships among psychosocial well-being, perceived health status, and health promoting lifestyle practices in middle-aged women in Korea. Therefore, the result of this study provide clues for encouraging people to adopt healthier lifestyles and constructing alternative strategies for promoting health practices.

  • This study is a descriptive research to identify lifestyle for health promotion, health condition, and degree of life satisfaction based on Korean elderly's physical constitution. The interviewee of this research was 53 outpatients of Oriental herbal medicine hospitals who are the residents either in Seoul or Taegu city. The data collection was performed during the March to the November of 1999. The research tools used for the measurement of the lifestyle for health promotion was "The Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile" developed by Walker, Sechrist and Pender. Measurement of the health condition was carried out using CMI(Cornell Medical Index) developed by Brodman, Erdmann, Lorge and Wolff. The Index for degree of the life satisfaction of elderly developed by Yun Jin was utilized to measure the degree of life satisfaction. Data analysis was performed using SPSSWin 9.0 software. In some cases, frequency, percentile, t-test, ANOVA or Pearson Correlation was also used to meet the specific research purposes when necessary. Tukey test was done for the post test. The conclusions are as follows. 1) The ANOVA test showed a significant difference in the lifestyle for the health promotion depending on physical constitutions of the interviewee. According to the Tukey test, 태음인 ($103.67{\pm}16.81$) performed better lifestyle for the health promotion than SOEMIN(少陰人, $85.34{\pm}12.69$) and 소양인($88.47{\pm}16.81$) (F=6.72, p=.003). 2) The result of the Pearson Correlation showed a positive correlation between the lifestyle for health promotion and health condition. As a result, the group practicing lifestyle for health promotion maintained a good health condition. Result of the Pearson Correlation also showed a proportional correlation between the lifestyle for health promotion and life satisfaction. Accordingly, the group practicing lifestyle for health promotion maintained a high degree of life satisfaction. Finally, the result of the Pearson Correlation showed a proportional correlation between the health condition and the degree of life satisfaction. Consequently, the group in a good health condition showed the high degree of life satisfaction.

  • Purpose: To describe the performance in the health-promoting lifestyle and to identify the major factors affecting the health-promoting relationships between self care behaviors and health promoting lifestyle profile in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Method: A convenience sample for this study was 172 pulmonary tuberculosis patients who have taken TB medications in urban city. The HPLP-II was selected to measure the concept of health-promoting lifestyle because of the number of research studies conducted using both the original HPLP and the revised HPLP-II. The statistical methods used in this study were t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression. Result: The differences of the HPLP-II were found to have a significance of age, marital status, education level, and health service center. The level of self care behaviors was related positively to the level of health promoting lifestyle and their subcategories. Based on stepwise multiple regression analysis, the model that predicted factors included self care behaviors, age, health service center and education. Conclusion: After decades of decreasing rates, TB has reemerged as a serious national problem in Korea. The careful clinical management and more national concern of TB may help to improve the outcomes of many patients. The findings of this study suggest that TB patients who are more fulfilled in health-promoting lifestyles and self-care behaviors may be able to make better decisions regarding positive health-promoting behaviors.
